Which firmware are you on at the moment?

I find a cleanout of the phone's internal memory speeds up the slowness that builds up over time. I find keeping it above 40MB free helps things running as they should be.

Go to 'Settings' and 'About Phone', look for 'Android Version'. And rooting, you would lose nothing and gain everything

It would also be handy if you gave us your build number from that page too.

And yes, everything on your phone can be backed up between firmwares. The only downside to rooting is that, if you want 2.2, you either have to switch to vanilla android without htc sense or use the not quite perfect 2.2 + sense roms.

FYI, I made this into a separate thread in the rooting section.

Well, you're on the latest firmware, so the only way forward with firmware is to switch to custom firmware

Luckily, the 2.1 firmware is easier to root than the old 1.5 firmware. The second half of this thread is a guide on how to do it.

The question remains though, if you are going to root, do you want to stick to 2.1? Or try vanilla 2.2 (stable) or 2.2 + Sense (not so stable - I don't think the camera works)?

(There's even the early stages of 2.3 on the Hero now, but I really wouldn't recommend it as your first custom ROM )

Angry

hi if i say what items i use can you say if these work on a custom firmwear

gmail and this is on the 2nd screen to the left as all emails com up in preview

text screen 3rd screen to the left not that i use text much but kids have frre text so they text me to say calll me to save there money i have 600 mins a month only use at most 150 mins (yes i know i have no friends or poss i have better things to do with my time than text one word text) sorry am trying to teach my little ones that when you text you should still text in full not m8 for mate sorry stop the moaning.

most inportant link the hero to a laptop to use the internet i like the 2.1 as when you put in the cable it asks you 4 options do you want to share you internet in 1.5 you have to go through a few options to share

and market place to add new aps not that i use it much but updating in the new 2.1 is better it keeps a track of all aps and just asks if they need updateing

and the 2 jokes aps dirty jokes and funny jokes i use a lot to passs the time when ever

and savey internet shoper will neeed to work as will the camera

i would like to use flash as well if poss as this is the other half of rooting as the seed is not as much as i would like and it would be nice to use flash as my kids phone just bought has been planed to have the 2.2 update an i am getting the micky taken out of me as hers is getting the update and a phone i have got to keep for another year is not ?

thanks angel

Hmm. How have you got your gmail account set up? The proper gmail app account doesn't come with widgets, so you must be using a 3rd party widget or even a different email app.

Are you talking about this SMS widget? There are lots of SMS widgets on the market, but one you might want to consider is Launcher Pro. It's a launcher app, meaning it's your homescreen, your app drawer and so on. The paid version comes with quite a few HTC inspired widgets. These are the SMS ones.

I'm not too familiar with the way it works without HTC Sense, I don't really tether my phone at all, but I know it's still possible to teather via USB or even turning the phone into a WiFi hotspot.

You should have access to all of the apps you're used to, as well as new ones or updated versions. It's always possible to transfer to apps you have to the custom ROM

and savey internet shoper will neeed to work as will the camera

You'll need a vanilla (i.e. non-HTC Sense) 2.2 ROM then.

Sorry, but flash just isn't compatible with our phone's hardware. There's always the SkyFire browser, which I've heard can play a lot of flash videos. (Although I haven't really tried it since the beta a while back).

thanks angel
