Confused Overclocking won't work

Hi! I am using a rooted HTC Hero (Gsm, EU), and have been trying to overclock it now, without results though. I have tried both CPUBoost and Overclocking widget, but the same thing happens with both of them: I set the minimum speed to something and maximum to 710mhz, and choose "save". But after this, both the applicationwidget and my SystemPanel taskmanager tells me that my device is only on 528mhz. Why? And sometimes (especially after the screen has been turned off), the speed is att 245mhz, which really wasn't my goal when installing these applications...

Soo, what to do?

Which ROM are you using? If you're on the stock ROM, I believe you have to disable the perflock to enable speeds above the stock speed.

If you're already on a custom ROM, which governor did you pick in the overclock apps? The newer governors won't run the phone at the max all the time, only when it's needed.

Using SetCPU, it's done from the Main tab, Menu. One of the options is "Disable perflocks"; select it and you'll be able to o/c beyond the stock 528MHz max. Note that doing this with the stock kernel will have no effect.

I think I solved the problem today by installing the CyanogenMod custom ROM, and then try again with the CPUboost (which is free)... At least my systempanel tells me that my CPU is now running at 710mhz. So the kernel I'm running atm is Linux version 2.6.29-cyanogenmod, which as far as I consider means that I am not using the stock kernel anymore.

Correct, that kernel (like the majority of the recent third-party ones) is compiled to allow overclocking. 710MHz is a good top-end; my own isn't 100% stable above 691MHz, although it is happy to go as low as 176MHz on FlyKernel-12 without wake issues.

Glad you're now a member of the "ROM Junkies Club".
