Hmmm, I think I'll stick with cronos for the moment. It seemed to be smoother with animations and stuff when compared to CM7.

Don't imagine it will take CM7 long to catch up with cronos though, since they got his website taken down.

EDIT: Although apparently this has cronos' EGL improvements, which I gather are responsible for the animation smoothness. I guess I'll have to try it

is there anything cronos (assuming i can now find it somehwere online) is lacking or needs fixing?

what are the improvements over 2.2? some 2.3 things i think would be cool but don't know if they are working fully in the new ports due to limited hardware of the hero:

- 3d google maps
- improved application managing, battery life, speed
- multitouch keyboard
- better cut and paste
- SIP calling

The NFC, any gaming optimizations, and live interactive wallpaper are probably all useless to the hero.

Any one running a 2.3 build care to write a mini-review?

Hmmm. I've been running with Froyo's App2SD as I'm not carrying so much baggage on the Hero now it's my stand-by, but I was thinking of going back to using sd-ext. More problematic is the lack of hardware buttons.

I might still give it a flash later now that I've got ADB working again. I was going to do a reset anyway to see exactly what the "Google backup" restores.

3D maps worked ok for me on one of the older cronos builds. It was a little slow, and it didn't look perfect, but it was close enough.

Actual speed is the same as 2.2 pretty much, according to the benchmarks. However, animations aren't very smooth, so it feelsslower. I've been running with animations turned off recently to cope with that. Battery life is much the same as 2.2 as well.

The cut and paste work fine, but I don't think multitouch is there on the keyboard. App management is (presumably) working as would be expected for 2.3; I've never heard anyone mention that.

Overall, Elelinux seems equal to cronos 0.9 and lox's CM7 build is a little bit behind in terms of smoothness. So since cronos aren't up and running at the moment, I'd say go with elelinux.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, I did have to break out Autokiller when using cronos. It seemed to get bogged down when switching between apps otherwise. Perhaps it's a ROM problem, perhaps it's just a GB incompatible app. I flashed elelinux this morning and haven't had the need for autokiller so far.

EDIT2: I would also add that the gapps file elelinux offered has a weird market. I don't think it's quite suited to our small resolution screen. Cronos (did) offer a better gapps package.

Ok, Cronos 1.0.1 has landed and it is a massive improvement. Like I mentioned previously, actual speed seems to be the same between all the roms, but UI smoothness is far, far, better. So it feels faster.

I would definitely recommend Cronos right now. (Of course, at this rate, there could be a better one tomorrow).

Should we just make this the general 2.3 thread?

Gave Cronos a try - google mps does perform the tilt action with 2 finger push/pull, but there are no buildings. are the vector graphics supported in the hero? a kind of tilt has been there for a while already in the navigation app.

anyone know how i reinstall all my apps? Titanium backup doesn't show any of my old apps even though i they're all there on the default SD card folder - is this because it's a new OS version? I would hate to have to start from scratch......

thanks.

I haven't found anywhere in England that supports the buildings. Not even London shows them. But if you find New York for example, you'll be able to see it in action. It works mostly but it doesn't seem to quite render them properly.

Is TB showing any apps at all? Is it getting root access?

Funny, I've just flashed Elelinux's 2.3 ROM and am impressed enough already to consider leaving the DZ at home tomorrow.

We may as well. I'll leave the choice of title up to you.

p.s. TiB worked fine on Ele's 7.0.0 RC0 r2. Apps backed up from 6.2.0's Froyo app2sd implementation have restored perfectly to the newly-created /sd-ext.

Ah - just looked up on Google's website. Apparently Cardiff, Dublin, and Birmingham are the only UK cities so far supporting vectored buildings.

TB has root. But only seems to show the apps and data that came with the 2.3 install. No sign of my old 2.2 apps. Could be a default folder or TB version issue or something random like that. Will wipe again for Elelinux 2.3 soon to give that a shot and try again.

Bit bored of the hero now - want a 1gig processor at least but tied into a contract.....

A couple of things to try in TiB....

1. On the Backup/Restore tab, make sure you have "Filter by type" set to "Uninst" and "Status" either "All" or "Backed up".

2. In Menu/Preferences/Backup Settings, check that the "Backup folder name" matches the folder name on the sdcard.

Hmm, how would you compare the battery life of cronos/elelinux's gb roms to a 2.1 rom like say VR12? I know it's worse but does it really ware off the hero alot?

Using Elelinux (v2). Over the past 24 hrs it's been about the same as VR12 but I always find battery life to be terrible the first couple of days after installing a new ROM, so I'll need to give it a couple of days to settle in so given that it's quite good already I'm expecting it to improve. Bottom line is it's not worse than VR12.

It's been so long since I used a 2.1-based ROM that a comparison wouldn't be valid. I do know that I saw improved battery stamina with Elelinux's 2.2 ROMs than with MoDaCo's 2.1-based versions.

I'll be better placed at the end of today to say whether Elelinux 7.0.0 is better/worse than his previous 2.2 ROMs. Right now, 5hrs off the the charger, the battery is at 93% with wi-fi & GPS disabled, mobile data enabled, and overclocked 691/176.

update:
After 9.5 hours off-charge the battery level is now 41%. App usage was pretty light today; Tweetcaster updating at 30m intervals, Gmail push, approx 5m browser usage and maybe 15m of general futzing around with the config (and showing it off to my jealous Desire-owning friend at work!) As I made or received no calls I also streamed a 128kbs Shoutcast stream via Winamp for 90m and the HSPA connection didn't miss a beat - battery temp (in my pocket) reached 38C.

update #2:
Today I took a different tack and hardly used the phone at all. It was switched to Silent, wifi and GPS switched off as neither were required, then stuck in my pocket while I got on with my work. Apart from occasional checks of incoming Tweets/emails that's where it stayed for the best part of nine hours. In that time the battery dropped from 78% to 73%.

Oh, I was quite liking that 2D gallery. I think I'll skip this build with fingers crossed that a v4 with working navigation might be along shortly.

Why not just pull it before updating then reinstall, replacing the 3D version?

Hello! I've just flashed V0.4 just yesterday and it caught in a boot loop I don't know if it is because of my LP. Anyways my question is also this, how to restore all my apps the fastest way? I'm currently using Titanium Backup but it is really troublesome as I have to agree installation one by one

That's because you don't have the donate version of TB.

I think 'MyBackup Root' avoids having to click OK on everything, but the donate version of TB is well worth it in my opinion

So at this point, in your opinions, which of the roms would you say is better? Elelinux 7 or TastyGinger 2.0? Overall anyway...

What the..!! Just curious.. @Slug, Do you keep flashing the new roms Ele release? If so, how do you update your data and keep restoring your apps?

'Wipe of cache' also means factory reset, right?

I don't need to, as minor version updates don't need a full wipe a.k.a. factory reset. All apps and their data remain intact. It's literally a five minute job (or less if I skip a nandroid backup of the existing ROM); boot into recovery, wipe cache, wipe dalvik-cache, flash the ROM, reboot system.

No, it just wipes the /cache filesystem. Like /dalvik-cache, this is rebuilt on reboot.

Cool, thanks! Another question. How do you wipe cache? I seem to only be able to wipe Dalvik-cache that's all..

Oh! Alright.. I think cuz mine's a older version.. I'll flash a new recovery then!

Amom_RA has all the options under the "Wipe" menu.
ClockworkMod puts "Wipe dalvik cache" under "Advanced".

The most recent release, v0.6, has fixed the performance control issue; CPU parameters now work as expected.

Enabling the proper ext apps2sd seems to have improved things a lot in terms of smoothness on gingerbread. I don't feel the need for autokiller anymore.

And I must say, as much as I like elelinuxe's work, the cronos gingerbread rom has cracked something nobody else has in terms of UI smoothness. I've tried the recent elelinux and it's just not the same.

Oh! Alright.. I think cuz mine's a older version.. I'll flash a new recovery then!
If you are using Amon RA you need to upgrade to the latest version. I was also pondering for a while what this cache wipe function was.

I've gotta say V7 has been incredibly stable for me so far. Even the GPS has been behaving. On top of that both battery life and memory management is improved over Villain12 which I was previously using.

Thanks! Sorry, but how do I flash from 1.6 to 1.7.01 RA? Yes, I'm using Amon RA. I didn't understand the instructions, so it'd be good if you guys can help me out with it :]

cheers!

[Recovery ROM] [15-August-2010] RA-hero-v1.7.0.1 - xda-developers

The instructions in above link is pretty self-explanatory. Since you're already using 1.6, all you have to do is a couple of adb commands from your pc. What exact problem did you encounter?

It's well worth having available if you're into modding your handset, as it can be a lifesaver if you mess up. Once you have it installed, adb /? will display the available commands, options and switches, but all you need to do in this case is follow the first set of instructions for devices with a custom recovery already installed.

What additional stuff can I do with adb actually? ^^

What will I lose from Sense if I install this rom? I assume that there won't be a 2.2 with Sense? I want to start afresh as I currently have problems with apps installing on my phone for a long time now.

There are 2.2 ROMs with sense, but they don't have a working camera as far as I know.

Don't know if it's just me, but I've noticed that I'm no longer getting the white line animation when the screen times out. I've got it enabled in CyanogenMod settings, but this makes no difference.

Yeah, it's just you Phil. j/k

The screen-on/off animations work for me, but there are a lot of posts saying they don't for others. Seems it can sometimes take disabling, rebooting, enabling and rebooting again to get the settings to "stick".

Having said this, I now predict that the animations will cease to work as soon as I flash the v0.8.1 release.

What's the consensus? Is this ROM stable enough for day to day use?
