It works 110% .. SOme T-Mobile people have reported success without downgrading ROM's
Safe & Easy.
1)Download it.
2)Save it to SD Card ROOT (not in any folders)
3)Open up a file manager on your phone (Download a file called ASTRO File Manager from the marketplace..if you don't have a file manager..)
4)Find the 'InstantRoot.apk' file.
5)Run it.
6)It will say it's been successful
Voila. Your done.

On a side note... if you are planning on Rooting & Then Installing To A Custom ROM.. look no further than the thread I made today over @ Modaco.. I too was confused ..There are so many guides out there. Each more confusing than the last. So many unnecessary steps. This way is quick and easy.
u need this first:
1. Amon ra's is recovery latest version is 1.5.2 u can get it thru searching xda developers,
2. mcr 3.1 as in any name of zip file
3. hero with version .5 ( which u r having)
4. a program called instant root ( google it u can get it easily)
5. a program named flashrec ( again google it)
most of the steps r more or less same, i have done the proc thru following sequence
1. install instant root ( u get root access )
2. copy amon ra recovery to sdcard ( not in any folder )
3. install flashrec
4. on flashrec first Back up ur recovery on first screen then in address bar put "/sdcard/(ur amonra recoveryname with .img without ) press flash
5. done!! swith off switch it back on holding home key & power key
6 once u r on recovery screens there are all options always do the wipe & then flash mcr3.1
7. reboot & ur done
this is assuming u have partitioned ur sdcard. there is option to do that in recovery screen & believe me it works!! ( u need only two ext 2 & fat )

So what changed your mind about the "long-winding, boring, tedious process for little benefit"?

Originally that's how it was...quick and easy. Then the fastboot vulnerability was patched, so another route had to be found. Then something else got fixed, necessitating another solution. When the 2.x update appears I'm sure the process will require alteration again.
Thanks a lot for taking time to post up your successful procedure. Between this and Quantumrand's sticky I think just about all bases are covered. Maybe it's time to roll all the rooting/custom ROM stuff into the sticky so that it doesn't get buried?

Hey i was following your insta-root guide after its done installing what do i do, and how do i know if its been rooted

Reason: Quoting fixed
Hey i was following your insta-root guide after its done installing what do i do, and how do i know if its been rooted
Hi. It should say rooting has been successful.
To check, download an app called QUICK BOOT from the market. Or search 'root' in the market.. read the info about the app and make sure it says 'phone needs to be rooted' ... install it.. if it runs you have rooted your phone successfully.
Install it. (Quick Boot)
Then if it says the PHONE NEEDS TO BE ROOTED then you have failed.
If it does not say anything at start up your fine.
You have successfully rooted your phone.
================================================== ===================== Then..if you want to install a custom ROM then do this:-
================================================== ===================== How To Install A Custom Rom
You will need a file manager such as ASTRO to locate the applications to install.
1) Copy all the files to the root of your SD card (I.e. Not In Any Folders).
2) Install instant root to gain Root Access.
3) Install flashrec.
4) In flashrec press the button which says ‘Back up your recovery’. Then in the address bar type the following /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.2.img ... Then press flash.
5) Switch off your phone. Switch it back on BUT hold the home key & power key together instead of just the power button. Wait for a black recovery screen with text to pop up.
6) Once you’re on the recovery screen there are a few options to choose from.
7) Click ‘Backup/Restore’ option. Click ‘Nand Backup’. When this is complete reboot your phone from the ‘Reboot’ option. Mount your SD card and copy the Nandroid folder to your PC in case anything goes wrong.
8) Switch off your phone. Switch it back on BUT hold the home key & power key together instead of just the power button. Wait for a black recovery screen with text to pop up. Always proceed by wiping your device. The option you want to select from the menu is therefore WIPE. Then select Wipe data/factory reset.
*****YOU WILL LOSE YOUR CONTACTS/SETTINGS/APPS/SMS MESSAGES ETC ETC*****
*****USE BACKUP SOFTWARE BEFOREHAND*****
*****USE THIS FORUM&GOOGLE TO SEARCH FOR BACKUP SOFTWARE*****
9) After wiping is successful go back to the main menu and select FLASH ZIP FROM SDCARD. Then select the Custom ROM you want to install. The process may then take a few minutes. There will be a status bar to show you the progress.
Before pressing ‘Reboot system now’ make sure you have partitioned your SD card so you can enable Apps2SD. To do this select ‘Partition SDCard’. Then Click Partition SD. Keep Swap File to 32MB. EX2 to 1GB then FAT32 as the rest. When that is done, you want to select the ‘SD:ex2 to ex3’ option. Then Reboot your device.
It may take a while for your phone to start-up but fear not. Be patient. Any longer than 15-20 minutes take out your battery and restart. Make sure you have WIPED your device.

The reason was because I was bored..I didn't want to revise lol...
The Quick Root method is a God Send. Also clear instructions helped sway my mind and everyone kept on saying it's faster. But Apps2SD was the main main reason
I hated seeing 'low memory'

Reason: Link removed

Hahaha! Nice one.... reminds me of my own student days and long "revision periods" in the student union bar.
@all: I've removed the direct link to the ROM for now pending clarification on whether it infringes HTC/Google copyright. This is purely for the protection of Android Forums, and is not intended as criticism of either the dev or users. We (admins and mods) are trying hard to do right by everyone concerned, so please bear with us.
So i downloaded quick boot and ..... its says my phone needs to be rooted. I have no idea what im doing wrong i downloaded insta-root and it says application installed and thats all. I have no idea what to do now should i reformat my sdcard?
i also noticed that there was a notification on my phone that said instant-Root failed... Ugh! why does this happen to me lol

No, really, there is no APK file, just a rar file containing other files but no APK in it.
You just need to change the .zip file extension as .apk (no need to extract or anything). I have seen lot of apps are in the zip extension while downloading but I just change that to .apk. It worked for me!!!

Ah, right'o'.
Done that...
Got notification... Root access failed / root access was not aquired.
I'm running a Hero (G2 Touch), on T-Mobile UK.
F/W 1.5
Build 2.73.110.26 cl#69351
Software v 1.0.0A6288
Any way round this ??
Nope, will not succesfully intant root, and flashrec will not back up flash image or flash a new one.
Can anyone confirm that i have no choice but to roll back to an earlier ROM when stock Build is 2.73.110.26 on a new T-Mobile Hero (G2) ?
If it is the only way, i've read the instructions to do it briefly but by no means am i an android techy, nor do i understand the process fully, would just be a case of following the steps and hoping for the best.
Is this wise ?

Can't believe how easy that was. This should be stickied somewhere.
