Default Calls to me going straight to voicemail

I have used my Hero in 2 different countries and I get the same problem: Regardless of signal connection, I miss half (a guess) of all calls made to me. People tell me it finally dials after a few straight-to-voicemail tries. This didn't happen with any of my previous phones (Nokias and Motos), in both of the aforementioned countries.

Has anyone else got the same problem? Or is it just my phone that has it?

I really hope my rubber case has all to do with this because I bought the phone from eBay (i.e. no warranty).

I just tested this.

I have a virtual number for work calls which I can forward to multiple real numbers. So I set up the number to ring on my landline, my Hero (on Orange UK) and my old Palm Treo with an Orange UK sim. The calls are forwarded to all three phones at the same time.

The landline was first to ring. 1 second later the Treo rang. 8 seconds after the landline rang, the my Hero started ringing.

The delay, which has been mentioned repeatedly on this and other forums, appears to be down to the Hero rather than the network. Is it Android or Sense that is causing the delays? I suppose I could test this by turning off the HTC Sense UI and running the test again.

One fix for this is to extend the time that the Hero rings before it goes to Voicemail. Look at this thread, for example.

When doing change's to a contact you can make a choice so when that contact call, they go straight-to-voicemail.

This kept happening to me and I also found text messages weren't delivering to me either.

Mentioned it on here and someone suggested turning off 3G since in areas where 3G signal is low / there are lots of people trying to use it (e.g. Central London where I live and work), it effects incoming calls.

I have absolutely no idea why would effect calls and text but switching it off seems to have fixed it.

Thanks for your input but I'm not talking about delays. I'm talking about not receiving calls at all, even in a signal area.

Sometimes people call me and it goes straight to voicemail without even dialing - even though I had full signal. They call again and it does the same thing. Third time they call, it finally dials and I can hear my ringtone from my pocket. I don't get any missed calls for the first two calls. Location, signal, network, country don't have any impact - it seems as though my phone is the problem. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same problem?

I had the exact problem from day one. On day two i took the phone back to Bestbuy and they tinkered/reset and then replaced the phone. Kinda pointless to have a phone that wont ring isnt it? I know this doesnt help solve your problem but so far (day4) my phone still rings.

Default I have exactly the same problem

Vanilla Hero on Vodafone UK sub, purchased a month ago (so I'm presuming latest firmware, etc).

I had assumed this was just a reception issue, but with the phone placed exactly on the same office desk, people will get either:

. Straight through (phone rings normally) or

. Several seconds' delay, then voicemail (which you might expect if the handset recently moved out of coverage) or

. Straight to voicemail (this seems to happen the most)

I'm still trying to understand if this could be a reception issue, but it doesn't seem that way - signal strength is showing as average. Am losing confidence in this phone.... any ideas welcome.

I am glad I am not alone. When I was using Vodafone with my previous phone (Nokia) I did not have people go straight to voicemail. So when I started Orange with the Hero, I blamed it on the network but when I tried the same phone in another country and got the same problem. I knew the problem lied in the phone.

I know this almost certainly won't have any affect, but do you have a case on your Hero?

I wouldn't make that assumption - I've only had my Hero for 6 weeks or so and it did not come with the latest software. I had to download the the 2.73 version from HTC.
Check that Settings | About phone | Build number starts with 2.73

Default Switch to 2G only?

Pete,
Thanks for getting back to me. I've checked the build number and unfortunately it's 2.73....

I found a couple of postings on other forums suggesting that the issue might be associated with calls getting diverted when 3G or possibly EDGE data was being communicated at the same time as the incoming call hits the handset.

Setting the phone to 2G only, the solution suggested there, is a real last resort for obvious reasons, even assuming it works, but I'll give it a try and see if it makes a difference.

Maddening issue, isn't it. I guess I haven't really proven it's an issue at all, but it doesn't feel like simply poor reception! See the above posting also - maybe you can try setting the phone to 2G only and we can compare results.

It took me a while to find it: Settings --> Wireless Controls --> Mobile Network Settings --> Use only 2G networks.

It's been a few days now that I've used the only use 2G network and I'm still getting saying stuff like 'wow finally you picked up' 'it finally worked'.

What else shall we try?

Default ROM upgrade?

Hi,

Reason for not posting back before now is I think moving to "2G networks only" has improved the number of "straight to voicemails" for me, but I can't be sure: I still get some, (still seems more than I ever got before this handset), but maybe these are down to genuine poor signal?

HTC look like they released a new ROM upgrade, but only for 3 (I'm on Voda). I guess I'm hoping they'll follow up with a new release for the generic version shortly.

I know this thread is a few months old, but I am wondering if you found any solutions to this? As far as I can tell, if you set the handset to 2G only, then whenever the phone is using data (and that's quite a lot with email, calendar, contacts, social networks, stocks, weather, etc, all syncing all the time) then voice calls will go direct to voicemail as 2G can't handle data and voice at the same time.

Pain for me as I live in a non-3G area so am stuck with 2G most of the time. Slow data speed I can live with, but having to turn off ALL my auto sync/updates is a bit of a throwback to the 90's.

I don't think your data mode makes any difference. You can turn data off and still make calls. ..I. think

You can turn data off and make calls. The issue is that with 2G, you cannot receive a call IF the phone is actively using the data connection at the time the call comes in, whereas with 3H/HSDPA, you CAN receive a call at the same time as data is being transfered.

T-Mobile are suggesting those G2 owners with problems set their phones to 2G only. This will mean they end up missing MORE calls as these smartphones use data all the time.

Thats interesting, i never realised. Does the phone use 2G by default if no 3G or H is available?

Can't remember the settings on the Hero, but my Desire has settings for:

WCDMA only (3G/H - won't drop to 2G, will simply lose signal if no 3G)
GSM only (2G only - will never try and connect to 3G/H)
GSM / WCDMA auto (will prioritise 3G/H and drop to 2G when it has to - think this is the default).

Default calls going to voicemail on active data connection using 2G

Reading all these posts, so many of you are nearly there with the answer but here it is.

It happens on iphone too, if you are in a 2G area and your data connection is active, background stuff, email or browsing then if you get a call, it will go to voicemail and make the data a priority over voice.

This is a common GSM network issue & does not apply to 3G. I use an iphone on o2 and it is exactly the same on 2G. It is to do with a thing called Line 2 mode GSM. As far as I know the only network that allows this to not happen is Vodafone. During a live data connection on 2G with Vodafone, your call comes through, as far as I know ALL the other networks on 2G prioritise data over voice. On 3G this does not happen.
