Just registered here to tell that with Advanced TaskKiller kills something that has to do with the software registering the Headphones being plugged in. I just restarted my phone, and it worked fine. Used the TaskKiller and the phone didn't register the Headphones again.

I can barely believe people are still posting this problem. It's not a hardware issue, nothing to do with a microswitch and you don't need a fancy routine of switching on and off and plugging and unplugging.

You just need the latest ROM. See Post 42 of this very thread. Now, if you have got the latest ROM and are still getting this problem it would be interesting to hear...

Default I have the same problem with Headphone, is the jack?

I have a HTC Hero, I'm very happy with it.

My one concern is, twice, I have plugged a headset in and it was not recognize, i had to play around with to work. It does not appear to be the jack, but I 'm wondering what's going on.

did you actually READ this thread????

OT: I've the latest ROM. It worked fine untill I started to use advanced task killer, so there's a relation.
I will check this out.

update: after installing ATK I didnot reset yet (big advantage with android, there's no need to )
After restart headphone recognition works fine and hot plugabble.

so: make sure you have the latest build, it 's on the HTC site
and: do some resetting before checking things out.

Ok, NOOB question here. I've downloaded the ToggleHeadset widget, but don't know where to find it to install it. Help, please? TIA!

Its a widget mate so you have to add it to one of your Home screens like you would with a clock.

SCUMPUPPY.... You Rock! That was SOOOOO EASY!! I got soooo mad at my stereo in my truck because Pandora wouldn't work, but my crummy IPOD would.... I spend most of my life driving around in my truck and I rely on internet based radio.... Now, Here's another question.... Is there a way to make the sound better??? I'm playing the radio through a radio station, so I know it won't be perfect, but the base is coming thru too Hard!!! If I could reduce the base (because the speakers in my truck are old...) that would be great!! CD's and the radio sound perfect! but when I plug in my phone, it sounds like my speakers are about to POP!!! any suggestions?? I don't listen to LOUD music and I've tried turning down the volume on my phone and it works a little better.... Does my phone have an equilizer??? any help is appreciated!!! THANKS! LostOAM311

I posted the following on this thread: http://androidforums.com/htc-hero/8502-how-you-fix-your-headphone-not-working-problem-guys-gals.html

Installing the Toggler widget works, but it's quite inconvenient having to turn the toggler on and off every time you want to use your phone with or without the headset. There's one simple way to fix this without having to install any programs. Simply unplug the headset from your phone and turn the phone off and back on until it works. It might take a few tries but it works. I read on a site, can't remember which one, that you need to remove the battery to reset the whole phone, but I've never done it and it still works.

Also, before you turn your phone off for whatever reason, make sure that the headphone jack is unplugged. For some reason, turning off the phone while the headset is connected to the phone, it will make the phone not to recognize the headset after you turn the phone back on.

This works for me and I hope it works for all of you as well! and if it doesn't, I guess you can always download the widget mentioned above! =]

Laugh Solution to this problem hopefully

New Response From [ Anthony (UK - Ireland Support (Tech)) ] Dear Mr Mccully,

Thank you for contacting us. In respect of the issue you have described regarding the supplied headphones not being recognised by the HTC Hero handset, the first stage of troubleshooting this issue is to attempt a ROM upgrade. Before beginning installation of the ROM, connect the supplied headset to the device, and ensure that it remains connected throughout the ROM installation procedure. If you have already installed the latest version of the ROM software from our website, then please attempt a hard reset with the headset connected, by following the below steps:-

1. With the device turned off, (remove and re-insert battery) press and hold the BACK and HOME buttons, then briefly press the POWER button.

2. Continue pressing the BACK and HOME buttons until you see a white screen with three skateboarding androids at the bottom.

3. release the BACK button and then press HOME to hard reset the device.

4. When the clear has finished, press MENU to reboot the device

If neither of these procedures are effective, then it may be the case that we need to book your device into our repair centre so that our engineers can run a full suite of diagnostics. This can be achieved by calling 08458900079, whereby one of our agents will be pleased to arrange this for you. If you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Default Daft problem

The phones been perfectly fine for the last 5 months then suddenly this.
I don't think the office really enjoyed the Prodigy out loud while I battled to shut the phone up!
Contemplated having a grumble to Orange/HTC but thought I'd go for the obvious and turn it off/on again.
Well it works OK now.....for how long?!

Ho hum, the mysteries of the world...........

Confused

I got my hero less than a week ago. I used the headphone jack on the phone for a day or so with no issues. I didnt use the headphone jack for a couple days and bought some skullcandy earbuds. They didnt work! I thought it may be that the plug was a straight plug instead of a 90 degree angle jack, so i tried the 90 degree. Still no luck. I took it back to the sprint store and swapped it out for a new one. I'll post again and let the forum know how that went.

This work around seems great. It has plenty of documentation online about how well it works, and so far people have been thrilled. I am going to assume that its fixed. I work in IT and I know how precious a good fix is. Thanks!

Delighted to find this thread!

I had a problem in which every time I put the Hero in airplane mode, the headphone jack turned off and could NOT be turned on. The rest of the time, the headphones worked perfectly.

However, installing ToggleHeadset fixed the problem - now I can turn on the headphones in airplane mode. It's a bit of a pain to be required to manually toggle the headset on and off any time I want to use the headphones, but it's definitely better than having no ability to use the headphones in airplane mode!

My thanks for a very nice app that performs exactly as designed!

Glad I found this forum.
Have had my hero for < 1 week and ran into this headset issue. Called Sprint support (stretch of the definition) who had no idea other then to take the phone into a "repair center".
This has been an issue for over 8 months now (if you were to follow the threads in this post... probably longer) and there's been no firmware fix issued? Doesn't give me any warm fuzzies for the response time for OS issues on the phone, though it is a really fun toy.
Thanks for whomever posted the fix for this, it works fine... just wish a permanent fix would be provided so this hack wouldn't be necessary.

Hardware? Would seem to be a firmware issue if the toggleheadset widget "fixes" it?

I had returned my phone when I had this problem and the new one seems to do the same. Where my ear phones didn't work or my phone just resets. I assume that this was the ROM so I was going to update it with the new OS 2.1 but still waiting.

Thought this might be the same problem that I had with my Hero when i read the thread title, but it might not be.

Regardless, I'll offer my own findings incase it helps someone else.

I used to have a pair of schneider in-ear headphones that I loved, and I tried to use them with my new Hero but found that the phone wouldn't always pick them up when i inserted the jack. I then realized that the casing that surrounds the input jack together with the L shaped phono plug on the headphones weren't really suited with each other, the phono jack wouldnt go all the way in like it would with my ipod. So i had a quick search on Amazon and found a pair of Creative headphones that had a smaller input jack, one that would go into the phone easier.

And presto, not had a problem with the Hero not detecting them since.

I'm not sure if this is the same issue alot of you are experiencing, but I thought it might be worth a punt incase.

I have had my hero for the better part of a week and started having this issue. I called sprint and they told me that this is a known problem to them, and they ordered me a new phone. I wish I would have seen the widget info earlier today to give that a try, but heck, I havnt really had the phone long enough that im going to lose anything

Just to add for the log, I had my Hero for about 5 months and this happened, tried off and on, hard reset, different headphones, still didn't work.

Orange replaced it right away and sent me a brand new one.

I've had it for about 2 weeks and am experiencing the same again. I use it everyday, but I wouldn't have thought this should be a problem.

Going to try some of the fixes on here and then will be calling Orange again - may ask for an upgrade straight to the desire as the handset obviously has a major fault.

59 people with this problem, this is absolutely and utterly unacceptable.
The toggle widget seems too work, but there should be no need for it to work since this problem should not be happening any where near as much as it is.

Utter failure.

I've had this problem with 2 Hero's now.
Actually glad to see its not me, as i'm expecting my 3rd to be delivered tomorrow by orange which will undoubtedly have the same recurrent issue.

I intend to keep on at orange in the hope that they'll upgrade me to the Desire

If this doesn't work i've seen i can istall 'toggle'? But why should i have to?? This should work, and i want a phone that will work how it is meant to.

Exactly! this should not be occurring, when you buy a car you buy keeping in mind what purposes it is for and how it will suit around you, when you buy it you buy it for what it is, this means what it is is what you expect it to continue being after you purchase it, you don't buy a car having in mind what is going to break so you can plan on how to fix it. The same as when you buy a plane ticket you don't buy planing ahead the survival procedures you will execute when it has crashed into the ocean, you buy planing and expecting for what you paid for, which is to get to the destination in one piece. If I spend my well earned money on buying a phone with a headphone jack than that and only that is what I have paid for and what I expect to get, therefore anything other than that a working headphone jack is NOT what I have paid for and is NOT what I have bought. Now as far as I am concerned, selling something that does not do what you have claimed of it is called false advertisement and it is wrong and illegal, sure every now and then it is expected for a small percentage to fail, but this is no small percentage and it should not be happening near as much as it is.

this widget was a life saver... phone took a quick bath in a rainstorm today. took a bowl of dry rice and a few hours to get it back up and running and able to boot outside of "safe mode". then i thought i was screwed because i couldn't turn the icon off. bluetooth worked, but couldn't make a "normal" phone call with just the handset. back to normal now though. thanks again!

I got a hero (now that lots of newer androids are coming out) and was really enjoying pandora radio until my headsets/earphones stopped working.

After finding this thread, I see this is a very common problem and still happening to new phone owners, showing that HTC has never recognized or fixed the problem.

I downloaded the suggested widget, and by golly it is working right now!
Thanks so much for this fix, if this keeps working, it is not too much trouble to use it. Of course, no credit to HTC for this problem.

had the same problem where the headphones didnt work (though the jack at the bottom works with an adaptor) and all the backlit buttons and LED stopped working, to be honest though it prob saves some battery lol, but the rom update from htcs website sorted that, and within seconds 2.1 was downloading. so now everything works.

Default Possible quick fix for headphone problem

Try updating your phone, all of it. I had the phone quit after I had been downloading a lot of music. I tried a bunch of stuff and updated my firmware, profile, and PSR (sp). Voila! It worked.

Hi there,

Have my HTC Hero now for 3 months, with all the latest updates.
Same weird stuff happening to my headphone yesterday, it went dead. The evening before I updated some apps, lost the headphone socket. First thought it was an HTC hardware issue, I tried the headphone on another device and they worked.
Started a search on google and direct hit this topic, read all the answers in it and installed the headphone app, guess what, my headphone came back to life.
So this helped, many thx.
My opinion: rather stupid that with updating some apps, these things happen.

I'll keep an eye on this forum, it is quiet handy

This should not happen. Period. I did the toggle set app. Did not work. Task killer did not work. Took the battery out. And that finally made the phone headset work. This problem seems to be world wide. Not an isolated problem. What a headache. Thinking twice about upgrading.

Thumbs up Just dust?

Hey

I had the same problem. Turns out it was simply dust that had collected onto the bottom pole of the headphone connector. It's still plugged in but the phone doesn't register due to the dust and thus outputs to the speaker. This is why the SpeakerToggle-app works.

My solution: Straighetened a paper-clip and messed it around into the jack, then i used a mini-vacuumer (compressed air would probably also do the trick) to suck any remaining shit out.

Works perfectly now.

My headset suddenly stopped working, was about to get the handset replaced when I found a way of repairing this myself.. seems its simply a software fault which should get fixed in the next firmware update, until this happens this is how you fix it:

first enable installation of non market place apps by going into settings > applications > and then ticking Unknown Sources

then.. open your web browser on your phone and type in the following:

http://code.google.com/p/toggleheadset/

you will then see a link to download the ToggleHeadset widget

once downloaded and installed add a new widget to your home screen, select Android Widget and then select Headet Toggle Widget

you will then have a button on your home screen to turn the headset on and off

This has now fixed the headset not working for me.. I imagine it will work for everyone else

enjoy =)
Could not get headset mode to switch to normal use after unplugging. Used your advice and downloaded the Widget. It worked. Techs at Alltel had told me my problem could not be fixed. Thanks! Thanks!
