Hello, Just got my Hero and love it. Thanks for all the tips and great apps. I hear talk about a scanner. Can someone fill me in on that. Our phone has a scanner. If so how do you use it?
Hi there
I am a new owner of the HTC Hero and I tried to customise the ringtones and alarm sounds by using the directions provided by lekky but unfortunately this did not work out for my Hero. My SD card appeared as DCIM and I had to rename it to SDcard and then on the MEDIA folder I added an AUDIO folder in which I added three separate files one named ringtones, one named alarms and on named notifications. Then I added the appropriate .mp3 files to each folder while having the Hero plugged in with my PC.
Could you please provide any help as I am a newbie in the Android world. Thank you

the scanner basicly uses the phones camera to scan a barcode. there are two types (maybe 3) of barcode, the one lekky shoes at the start of this thread, the other like you would get on a cereal box.
depending on the app you get will depend on the results given to you. Shopsavvy seems to be be the most popular and works on some products but not all. when it does work it should give you a list of where the cheapest places are to buy that product and even gives you internet prices. bit of a gimmick really but if you like that sort of thing then its defo for you.
Hi guys, new to smartphones, new to the Hero, and everything associated with it.
Gotta say there's a lot of useful information here, thanks for all, going to be really useful once I get past this noob stage =)
Going to make myself look stupid by asking something that might be.. stupid. Visited the Android marketplace, and.. can't figure out how to download apps... can't find any download button anywhere. Is it just me? Or are there limitations in place?

Thanks. So let me get this straight. You need an app for this to begin with. Then you just take a picture and the app will do the rest?

You have to use the Market app on your handset. You can browse by category or search, and selecting an app gives you the option to install.
You can also use AndroLib from your desktop computer. Install a barcode scanner on your handset to read the QR codes provided for each app, and point that at the screen when you find something you'd like to try out.

Something's not quite right here; afaik when mounted on the PC the card shouldn't have a volume label unless you explicitly give it one. DCIM is the folder where the camera images are stored and is created automatically by the OS.
I suggest saving your data to the PC and reformatting the SD card in the handset. Once you've done this, mount it to the PC via the USB connection and it should appear in Windows Explorer as a removable drive e.g. F: Open this, ignore any folders already present and create a new one named audio. Inside this create alarms, notifications and ringtones folders. Add your files to the correct folders, reboot the handset and you should be good to go.
edit: here's a screen grab showing how it should look.

Thumps Up Slug!
Thank you very much. I just selected my preferred personal ringtone!
As you seem really familiarized with the Android system I have one more question for you.
I have selected a photo from the album to add it to a contact. I have used the crop tool provided by the HTC to zoom and crop a part of the entire photo. After couple of days the photo appears as the original one and not the part I cropped while editing the contact both on the HTC widget and during a phonecall.
Any ideas why is this happening and a possible cure? Thank you very much for your time and support

I have had great results with shopsavvys barcode scanner. Not only did it save me 20 bucks finding me a external hard drive locally and best buy matched the price but I love the reviews you can access after scanning a product. Saved me over 40 bucks that same day when I. Scanned in the store and read instant reviews.
Great info on here, priceless!
Very useful posting for a new-to-android person - thank you. One question though, when you say "download the "barcode scanner" application from the android market" which one is that? There seem to be lots of apps which do that. Any recommendations?

Search the market for barcode scanner, should be the first result, by ZXing Team.
What a brilliant list of tips. I I've had my Hero since September and didn't know half of the information you've put in one list. Very late to bed last night, getting rid of the vibrating typing keys, calibrating the keyboard etc. It's so much quicker and more accurate now. Downloaded more suggested apps this morning. Absolutely brilliant! Thank you.
Version 1.6
- Added ShapeWriter and keyboard types
I don't think version 1.6 is officially available for my phone. See chats giving this month as the time when 2.0 or 2.1 (depending on the person posting) will be released for UK Hero.

Sorry, that was confusing. Anyway, I've now downloaded Shapewriter and after only 5 minutes I'm getting to grips with it - very clever application. Thank you again.
hi guys, new here...
I bought my Hero last month and I can't find Locale and Flixster in Android Market.
Is there I website where I can download them from?
Locale is now a paid application. I wonder if there is a good free alternative.
There is one called 'Tasker' that got mentioned here a few weeks ago. It's a LOT more complicated than Locale, and still in Beta, but would be a suitable alternative to Locale. I think a new version is coming out soon too
New to the forum. Just got my first Android device (htc hero). Love this post. Very helpful. Tried most of these apps already going to the Unlockr.com. My question: Any way to follow one individuals post (such as this fella). Thanks.

I'm new to smartphones, recently got my Hero and just wanted to say a big thank you for putting the guides on here. Helped me get up and running big time; I can't imagine how long it would have taken to trawl through the Marketplace uninitiated. And as for the set up tips, I suspect I might never have known...
I just bought an HTC HERO today.....it will be here wed. , I knew this was a unique phone but after reading this thread I can see that it appears to be on the cutting edge of techology. Are we officially christening the 4th dimension ? My ten dirty henchmen look forward to spending the next few weeks exploring this new portal to the virtual world while my brain attempts to decipher the tech talk. Hey how long till we see a porn app? POONHUNTER or something cool like that ? Get busy you code warriors. The first ones free.
..Now if only there was an app that made this thing dispense RedBull.
could anyone help me im working now every weekend and wondered if there was a apps whicj i can watch the football (soccer) on my htc hero phone please help or even get my local radio station thank you craig
If you dont have already, its a must get - ASTRO FILE MANAGER! and why u may ask....
you can now back up all your apps to the sd card!! No rooting. No Partioning, just a simple copy and paste!
Once installed press menu - tools - backup - select apps - press backup. voila!
(once phone is reset, you will have to install the apps again from the sd card)
Also if you do have this app installed, instead of buying hide and seek, like i did, you can edit the file name so that it doesnt show up in your albums, keeping any sensitive material , safe from prying eyes . just add hide to the end of the file name. simples

I'm not a fan of paid content but does anyone here use Spotify?
It's absolutely awesome. Never thought I would see the day I would happily pay £10 a month for digital music, but I love this thing so much. Downloaded 1.2GBs worth of albums today.
Hi, everyone. I just got my HTC Hero and im facing a few troubles.
1st of all, i didn't see Market in the program list. How come?
and i check the filmware of my htc, its 1.5..when i wanted to upgrade newer version in htc website, it says Sorry, this software download is not suitable for your device.
The latest Firmware version is 1.5. The thing to look out for is the build number should be 2.73.405.something. You can see your build by going to Settings>About phone. Typically new phones are up to date so you may well not need to update. I can only guess that you are trying a non Hero ROM hence the message. If you really want to upgrade then you can root your phone but you'd need further advice on that (some posts on this forum somewhere on it).
Not sure about the Market thing - you definitely looking in the right place? Press the lower left soft key on the home screen (the circles) and it should be alphabetical under Market.

I would assume so, Desire will be running sense so it should be similar, especially when the Hero gets 2.1 as well, there won't be that much difference really.
