Default How to copy HTC Hero Phone contacts to Sim

Hi all

Not a thread as such, but this took me ages to work out how to do last night and I couldn't find any advice on it so thought this might be useful to somebody in the future. Anyway:

The issue: I've just got a new Desire HD and I want to transfer my contacts from my old Hero (or branded as a T-mobile Touch G2 in Britain). The trouble is, all my contacts on my Hero are saved to the phone or google, not the sim. Also, my PC installs HTC Sync but doesn't recognise my phone when I connect via USB so I couldn't transfer them that way. Both of these are known issues from what I see on forums. Additionally, there's no way of just going into 'people' and transferring to sim or SD via the menu. This is all quite a ball-ache.

Resolution: Don't go into 'people', as I've mentioned, there's no option to transfer to sim. From the home screen, go into 'phone'. Work through your contacts from A-Z. Long-press on each, then 'view contact', press the menu key, then 'more'. This will then give you the option to 'save to SIM'.

Seriously, that took a long time to work out but is defo quicker than keying them in from scratch.

Any contacts saved to google will be automatically downloaded to your new phone over the air, (assuming you use the same google account, of course). This also applies to calendar info and gmail data (if you use it).

Using SIM to transfer contacts is a pretty flaky way of doing it, many SIMs only store a limited number of characters for names, cant handle multiple numbers for a contact (they will be saved out as multiple separate contacts), and cant store addresses, emails, facebook links, etc etc.

An alternative to using google sync use an app like mybackup pro, there's a free version available, it's time limited but it will last long enough to transfer stuff over once, and it's well worth the purchase for the full version.

[edit] My experia arc has a backup/restore contacts option (press menu) which backs up/restores from SD, cant remember if the hero has this but this would obviously be the easiest option.
