Default Desire HD Tells Me I Use Rogers After Update

So I have an unlocked HTC Desire HD and I've had Fido on it since I got it. This morning I updated the firmware (Android 2.3.3, build 2.43.661.1) and since then the phone is saying I'm using Rogers Wireless - both when I wake up the phone from stand-by and when I actually go to the settings to see the operator name.

Texting so far still works but I just find it very strange when a TELUS phone, unlocked to FIDO, is now saying I have ROGERS.

I believe Rogers owns fido so that might have something to do with it.

They are the same company but it really shouldn't say Rogers Wireless on my phone.

It happens with Virgin Mobile users in the UK as they are a virtual network leasing lines from T-Mobile which can cause the phone to get confused from time to time.

So is it normal then for this update to just have your provider name changed, despite the fact that they're the same company? I mean, are all HTC users who are on Fido affected by this? Everything still works (phone calls, texting etc), but it just looks a bit better when it actually says Fido.

It points to a different string on the tower hardware.

The telus version of the software tells it to use a different identifier from the tower itself to set the carrier id.

Because Fido piggybacks its service using the Rogers towers, it will say Rogers Wireless. If it was using the proper ident for carrier id (I believe it's 'opname' value in the the management software for the towers) it would name it "FIDO" or "ROGERS" (depending on the sim hex identification that occurs while performing a handshake with the closest tower of the carrier) it instead shows the owner id value for the tower it performed the handshake with... thus it says "Rogers Wireless".

all you need to make sure of is that you have the proper apn settings to have use of data.

... so dont sweat it :P

The APN settings are still the same (for Fido data usage etc). All that really changed was the service name in the provider settings, that's all (it also shows Rogers Wireless when you awake the phone from sleep, when you see the unlock screen).

Everything works, though (text, phone, data etc). Thanks for the help, guys.

Np, I can tell you from making Blackberry Hybrids, that when using net_rim_data_provider.cod's from cdma based builds that it would do the same thing.
Again; its just a difference of what the device it told to look at during the device/network handshake to identify the network. Its nothing to worry about :P
