Default Orange branded no update date from orangehelpers

OK I'm bored of waiting and orangehelpers on twitter have today confirmed no known update schedule for branded handsets... so I need to de-brand. Dont need unlock or root just the normal unmolested htc firmware.

I have always done orange updates so current version is Android 2.3.3 Sense 2.1, software 2.50.61.3;

I'm aware of lots or differing ways of doing things, lots of download options and something called goldcard. Would someone be so good as to offer simple instruction as to the best and reliable way to achieve my aim. I'm not a techy and am worried about breaking things so an easy step by step with links to current software versions to use would be truly helpful.
In anticipation, Ian

Hi
happy to be corrected if I'm wrong but as far as I understand the only way to 'debrand' is via rooting your phone. This is explained in the 'all things root' section above but it will void any warranties on the phone.

Welcome to the forums - thanks for joining!

Goreygirl's got it in one... to debrand your phone, you would need to root it (there is a one click tool in this thread - [GUIDE] DHD All things root roundup sticky) - the tool gives you "Super CID" which is Super Carrier ID and sim-unlock... this is like having an unbraded phone, that can be used on any network.

Default Mmm scary...

Thanks both for guidance, I've looked at the ace hack and yes that looks scary... Its a shame it needs to be rooted in order to debrand. If I allowed the one click ace hack, would it know to install orange unbranded and then update appropriately? To be honest with a working phone that I like it looks like the prudent thing may be to simply wait...

I'd agree with waiting....you aren't missing a major life experience by not having he update yet. Rooting seems to work well for those who really want to customise their phones and are into that sort of stuff but I see a lot of posts of the type 'ok ..I've rooted...now what do I do?'.

I rooted my phone prior to the hack kit... I think that it would put unbranded software on your phone (Orange is branded).

If you change your mind, head over to the All Things Root section - plenty of people to help you out!!

Goreygirl and DURX are right; rooting isn't for everyone, but we'll certainly be on hand to assist if that's the path you want to go down. There are some good points made here on the pros and cons: Is rooting the dhd worth it.. I'm certainly very much pro root, but that doesn't mean the DHD is a bad phone without rooting.

Anyway, to your original question, I'll need to do a little bit of digging, but I think (and I'm not even 50% positive on this) that you can debrand using a goldcard and an RUU. Let me have a look about though.

Interesting... that does sound like it could work... I'll look forward to reading what you have to say on this (may even have to go and have a look myself )

Default Bootloader unlocker

Hi Guys, picking this up again, I saw HTC tweets the other day saying thay have officially released a 'bootloader unlock' for the DHD... is this likely to overcome all the complexities and make this far easier?

The root and ROM thing, maybe. Not sure how it would work with the RUU as the CID would still be Orange so it would only take Orange software.

Are you coming round to the whole root thing?

Thumbs up Rooting

I rooted my DHD with the Advanced ACE Hack Kit it took one click and was done in 6 mins with no pain.

See this:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259821

I then changed my Rom to BeatMod BlissSense Hybrid | Sense 3.5 | 2.3.5
This rom is fast, lots of extra goodies and is better on the battery and extends the life of my DHD until they port ICS

See this:

[ROM][Final][v3.2][Desire HD] BeatMod BlissSense Hybrid | Sense 3.5 | 2.3.5 - xda-developers

It rocks...

I have an UNBRANDED DHD from CPW on Orange, but still have not received the update. Is this down to Orange - I didn't think it was?

As your phone is unbranded, I don't think that it would be anything to do with Orange... I would sugget, perhaps, getting in touch with HTC to ask them?
