OK update time
Looks like its being canned as a update
arguments all over xda atm

No official comment as yet

Speculation is there might be a vanilla update similar setup to 2.3 for the desire as in you download via HTC dev

Goodnight folks

Its pretty much official I suspect HTC have all but canned

Vodafone aus had it first along with telus and other major carriers

It seemed telus did the right by saying no way
HTC I suspect tried to save face

Maybe others said no too after telus broke cover

Maybe they may drop it onto the HTC devs site after all

I got my nexus last year only kept checking and updating this thread as my wife had the desire HD

Good choice of phone the nexus will be

A lot of people are saying I'll never buy HTC again

End of the day 2.3 is working fine let's remember the handset for that rather than it chugging along with 4.0

My wife started on wildfire with 2.1 that upgraded to 2.2 and was terrible afterwards

Yes I'm annoyed at Htc for leading us along

Maybe as a parting gift they will release a kernel for developers to release a working camera ROM I know virtuous are nearly there already

I got it 18 months ago. Are they saying that what was top of the range 18 months ago is now too underpowered to run a newer version of the system? More likely they made this decision on commercial grounds.

If the DHD is too underpowered, how come ICS will still come to the Desire S and the Incredible S which run on the same hardware. This is just HTC trying to save money on rolling out ICS updates.

If this is the case with the software upgrade support my HDD will transfer to the Mrs at my upgrade and I will look at the Samsung.
Two reasons, this update support farce from HTC and the HTC One, you cant remove the battery, a personal thing but a bad design in my opinion.

Shame as I was on a knife edge between the two makes but this has swayed me over to the Samsung and I fear reading here the same for many people.

A lesson in how to loose money part 1

I'm not impressed by this news, made my mind up for me though. The screen on the phone isn't good enough for me & ICS would have merely prolonged it's life a bit.

I've no brand loyalty either so after this I'm looking at other manufacturers. Time for a change, SGS III looking likely.

glad i jumped ship now back in march to the galaxy note.

If there's anyone out there worried about going to another phone manufacturer other than htc, don't be. I know this doesn't apply to everyone here, but i know some people get anxious about using another brand of anything sometimes.

Definitely is a shame they have done this, and I imagine a lot of people who have DHDs will be put off wanting to buy another HTC in the future.

I thought figuring out the gingerbread update was bad. This is like am April fools joke gone wrong that just won't end. I'm hoping we get it, if we don't, I'm gonna be downloading a lot of customization apps just to give my phone a new fresh look.

One of the reasons I rooted originally was to get rid of the bloat... would be nice if you could have an update with no rubbish added

TELUS was not at fault, HTC canceled the Desire HD Android 4.0 update

oh well. if it's a question of HTC not being bothered,

Telus cancels HTC Desire HD Ice Cream Sandwich update, cites “poor performance”

then it looks like samsung when it comes to an upgrade.

Looks like there's a petition going around about this. I don't know if it will do any good, but I think it's worth signing.

Saw & signed that before, if HTC don't at least issue a further statement on the matter then I think they'll lose a fair few (more) customers.

This hasn't been handled well at all IMO.

Well this was released on the 21st July. Note the part 'In general, devices with 512MB ROM or less will not be upgraded to Android 4.0. These devices include the HTC ChaCha, HTC Salsa, HTC Wildfire S, HTC Explorer, and others'.

But is it not true that the DHD has 786MB? If the One S can withstand 4.0, the DHD can as well.

Just been to the Desire HD support/downloads page on HTC site and the stuff all about ICS has gone since the other night (only HTC SYnc sh1t left) so looks to me like thats it then. Goodbye HTC, hello Samsung for me. But will wait for the new Note which I am presumimg will have the new stuff from the S3 in it.

Like someone said earlier how to not to make friends and alienate people!!!

I wrote to HTC to ask if we were getting the update or not and received this reply this morning:

Thank you for your email regarding your HTC Desire HD.

My name is David and I am a Technical Support Agent for the HTC Written Team.

I understand that you wish to enquire if and when the Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) update will be made available for your phone.

I'm sorry to hear that you haven't yet received this update Robert. HTC has scheduled to begin rolling this update for the HTC Desire HD in July/ August. However, I do apologise but no specific date has been set as yet. This update will be rolled out from a central update server on a queue basis. When this update is made available for your phone, it will be sent to your phone automatically over the air (OTA).

In that case Robert, I would indulge your patience until this update is made available for your phone. I do apologise for the inconvenience this may be causing you.

To let me know I have successfully answered your query, please follow the link below to close your enquiry, you will have the opportunity to leave feedback about your experience contacting me today.

Let me know if I have successfully answered your question, please click here to complete this.

I wouldn't trust technical support have the updated notes to reply to customers with. Seen a fair few replies from them saying the same when queried over ICS, the blog says different & after the fuss that's been kicked up I'm sure that would have been amended if we were still getting it (or you'd like to think so at least)

Went to root my phone last night, Windows 8 Preview Build is not allowing me to do a few things during the process. Going to have to borrow a laptop running W7 or earlier to do it!

I got this in my inbox, WTF !

HTC Desire HD owners who are hoping to get an official update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Looks like we won't be getting an official ICS update.

Here’s HTC’s explanation for this:

After extensive testing, we’ve determined that the current version of HTC Sense with Android provides customers with the best experience on the HTC Desire HD. When we consider new versions of software, we weigh a number of factors, but ultimately the customer experience on the product is the deciding factor. We apologize for any confusion this change may have caused our customers.

To unsubscribe from these announcements, login to the forum and uncheck "Receive forum announcements and important notifications by email." in your profile.

You can view the full announcement by following this link:

HTC Desire HD officially cut from the Android 4.0 ICS updates list - HTC Desire HD

Regards,
The HTC Desire HD Team.

Hmm.
I too was looking forward to receiving ICS, however slightly disappointed by HTCs change of heart, especially with it being Sence that seems to have stopped the roll out.
Just a thought though, is there no way HTC could offer an option to DHD owners to download ICS without Sence OTA ?
At least that might satisfy some DHD owners, and help them save face.
Personally, while I've been looking forward to it I think I'd rather them cancel it than send it out with known problems - that'll just make things worse for them, there's nothing wrong with what I gave now. However, if they offered ICS without Sense, I'd probably take it.....

They released a "developers" edition of Gingerbread for the original Desire via their dev website. It had loads stripped out of it but it included a basic ROM and kernel so the devs of custom ROMs could work their magic.

So yeah, doing something similar with ICS & the DHD is a possibility.

I'm a click away from buying a SGS 3 at the moment, I bloody like the DHD though & keep thinking HTC may listen to customer demand (it'd be the best damage limitation they could probably do right now)

What a predicament!

^^To me, that's a no brainer. If you have the money for the SGS3, go for it.

I'm not taking anything away from the DHD, it's an amazing phone, but against the SGS3, there's no contest.

It's also rumoured to be getting JellyBean next month: Rumor: Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.1 update could be coming as soon as next month (Galaxy S2, as well)

I always get jittery when it's new phone time

I'd only be delaying the inevitable too, cheers for the wise words. Think I'll do it!

Edit: Ordered, I'm like a new kid at xmas time now

Really piss poor from HTC. I will be one of many who probably won't get another HTC as a result of their lack of service. I still love my phone thought and will be keeping it until it's at least 3 years old, possibly more, then see what the Android phone market looks like then. Probably 5.2" LED screens with 2GHz quad core processors and 2GB RAM ;-)

Although I'm not on a contract, I ordered mine as soon as it was available so it was the flagship when I got it, and now 20 months later they aren't supporting it? 24 months should be the absolute minimum.

Same boat I am/was in, paid a lot for the phone & in the end feel let down by HTC. My main gripe is announcing it before the "extensive testing". If it was never announced it'd be an easier pill to swallow.

I recommended the phone to a fair few people too (who went on to purchase one) so feel like I sold them short. Also the minor fact it can run ICS, if sense really is the issue I'm sure a lite version of 4.0 could have been created.

Anyway, I've voted with my wallet, bugger all else we can do it seems.

To be brutally honest, apart from the crap battery, the phone runs totally spot on and imo HTC haven't released a better looking phone before or after. The One X looks crap despite obviously being the new range topper. That said, the Galaxy SIII is currently the best phone out overall imo but is even uglier than the One X. Paid £450 new for my DHD sim free

The DHD is sleek, no doubt. I can live with the SGS3 design, it ain't that bad, got a nexus look to it (another phone I considered).

Good job I was indecisive too as it ended up being £30 cheaper today than it was yesterday for some reason

If Sense really is than there should not be an ICS update for the Desire S, Incredible S and the Rhym. The ICS updated for the Incredible S are already rolling out.

Default Hold on a minute!

I had to ring Orange to deal with an issue of my phone unbedding my network every time the phone hadn't been active for a couple.

Suggested solution provide, but failed. The young lady then let slip that a major upgrade was due at the end of July or the first 2 weeks of August!!
"Oh!" I say.....
"Yes sir, so can we confirm if your phone has the notification option on?"
We check, it isn't.
She gets me to choose the various paths to implement the solution.
"Right, sir...now you get your upgrade when it is released"

Could be something, could be nothing!!
