Default Help! High mobile data usage - com.google.uid.shared:10055?

I'm on Vodafone in the UK with a 500mb/month data package. I've had the Desire for 18 months now, and although I've been happy with it, recently the data usage on mobile (3g etc) has been going through the roof.

After doing a bit of research it appeared to be a bug with the OS when WiFi and mobile data were enabled simultaneously. So, last Friday before leaving the office WiFi goes off and mobile data comes on. During a 2 hour meal with friends the handset manages to consume 128mb of data!

I have Traffic Monitor installed (as well as Traffic Counter to verify usage) which shows what apps are using data - to my surprise the process was com.google.uid.shared:10055. I've tried searching the net for this but little shows up... By comparison, Facebook was about 1mb and Twitter 500kb for the same period.

I had installed Watchdog after a recommendation to catch rogue 'overactive' apps (set to 'conservative'), but nothing has been flagged so far.

The OS background data is off, I use Easy Battery to disconnect data over mobile or WiFi when the screen is off to save battery life and supposedly keep data to a minimum when I'm not using the handset.

It's kind of pointless having a device like this if I can't even enable data on the go, without the worry of blowing my data allowance on an OS process.

Can anyone shed light on this?

I take it your on a stock branded phone? What software version are you running, is the firmware up to date? Usually the most common battery drain problem is caused by widgets. I've had a similar problem in the past and I can't remember what was causing it now. But what I'd do is take off all your widgets and then add them back one by one and see what is using your data allowance.

Thanks, but battery life isn't really the issue here, it's excessive data usage.

I think that what Brutal was saying was that it can cause battery issues, but does go on to say

Could be worth trying, to see if it sorts your issue

Default same problem as Vodafone Germany Customer

I run into same trouble. For more than one year everything went well. This accounting period my limit of 300 MB was hit after 8 day(!). The culprits are 'System Traffic' 52.37 MB and com.google.uid.shard:10034 156.01 MB. I am Vodafone Germany customer. I contacted Vodafone Germany, no support yet. Any help appreciated.

Turn off ALL syncing and see what happens when you turn each back on one by one.

What has changed since you had "normal" data usage? What have you installed since you had "normal" data usage?

[Sorry, but these are standard 'support' questions if something was "normal" and now is not].

@dvhttn Dave,
I turned of all sync services and indeed volumn consumption leveled of. I wonder why com.google.uid.shard:10034 changed from 58 MB/month 156.01 MB/week from one day to the other without changing my profil of using the smartphone...
Vodafone Germany did not provide any useful help so far
