Just phoned T Mobile in case anyone has the same problem.
They told me they have an update from HTC but don't know if or when they will release it. I should phone HTC as its there problem.

So I then phoned HTC and they said they would flash my phone and put the latest software on it but have a feeling it will be the same that is on it as its branded.

Nightmare

I spoke to and tweeted T-Mobile last week, and they don't seem willing to commit to anything.

I had these signal problems a while back and they sent me a Sensation instead, but I didn't like it so stuck with the Desire S.

I originally S-offed and downgraded to 1.27, but last week got so annoyed waiting for an update I just rooted and am now running 2.3.5 with Sense 3.0.

I really would recommend rooting. Even if Custom ROMs don't appeal to you, it at least means you won't be relying on T-mob to push out updates.

I know rooting makes people a bit nervous, but I'd never done it before and the online videos etc make it so simple. Unbelievably simple in fact. Just don't bottle it half way through and pull a cable out; You may have problems then.

After I phoned HTC I thought I could just root/flash my phone myself and save the hassle of posting it for them probably not to fix it.

What video did you watch? Where do you get 2.3.5 and Sense 3.0?

I know I could google it but be nice to get the info from someone who has done it.

Default Fix

I've read the whole thread, and I had exactly the same problem..

I found a solution although your phone has to be S-OFF.

If you flash the latest radio file from here:

[RADIO] HTC Desire S Radios [PG88IMG.zip] (Updated: 21 Oct 2011) - xda-developers) that should fix the problem. (Presumably this is the version HTC are rolling out recently anyway.)

This problem was winding me up to no end, but having flashed that radio 3-4 days ago, everythings going fine.

Remember, it will only work if your phone is S-OFF, otherwise you'll have to wait for a carrier upgrade or S-OFF the phone (which HTC argue voids the warranty, although it is possible to S-ON again)

Default 3G fix post-update

Hi, new to this thread.

If you now have no 3G connection on Desire S after updating to 2.3.5 Sense 3.0:

Setting>>wireless & networks>>mobile networks>>Access Point Names (APNs)>> Press the menu button and restore defaults.

Not sure if this will work for every network or unlocked phones but i'm on O2 and this resolved the issue for me.

However, has anyone else had absolutely no GPS connection since updating??

I used the video here - although the post this is linked to is explaining how to S-off, the video takes you through the whole thing. I'd just watch it through until you're familiar with it, then go for it.

Signal drops completely - HTC Desire S

And the Pre-rooted Shipped ROMs are here. You'd want the HTC Europe 2.10.401.5 one.

I phoned them, they said they could give me no information on the update but HTC had sent them one.

This has happened in a place where I always get full signal and HDPSA internet connection. It is not resolved by moving the phone, in fact it appears the only way of "clearing" this signal issue is to try dialling a call, which instantly makes the full signal reappear!

If I haven't looked at my phone for a while and this occurs, I could end up being without signal for lengthy periods of time, which isn't ideal!

Any ideas? Anyone else experiencing the same problem?

Thanks in advance!

Identical problem and also with O2.

hi Chitungweeza, o2 are rolling out the upgrade for us users, I've had mine and it solves the problem and also gives you a nice new interface in Sense 3.0. Do a manual check to see if you have a software update available, Settings, About Phone, Software Updates, Check now. HTH

Default Same problem - but in Queensland Australia

Hi all
I have been reading this thread as I am having the same problems with my HTC DS dropping signal totally.

My phone is originally a O2 locked phone - which was recently unlocked as I have just moved to Queensland, Australia. I have bought a Telstra PAYG simcard and had to do some updates to my phone to actually get it to work.

For the last few weeks I just thought that it was the signal and area that I was in. However, we recently went away and someone with a normal (not smartphone) and the same network (Telstra) had full signal and I was sitting with diddly squat.

Would you have any advice for me please? Is there anyway to get an older version of software update put on my phone?

Telstra wont help because it is a UK phone so I can not go down that route.

It is doing my head in as I loved my phone until recently.

Thanks

MB

Yes there is.. but unless there's a specific software update for Telstra available, you're probably best off going down the route of installing generic HTC software. Ultimately, it shouldn't make any difference to you whatsoever.

I don't really check this thread very much now, as I'm about to start trying to understand why I'm getting the same ****ing problems with my HTC Sensation all of a sudden (damn you, HTC) but my signature should start you off.

If you get any problems, ask in this thread or PM me - hope that helps.

Hi guys,
I have a desire s on o2 and I have been having this problem for a while. When I got the update last week I thought great problem solved. However, after the install I didnt notice anything different. I checked the software version page and it still shows 2.3.3 and sense 2.1!
When I search for updates it says none available!
Do I have any options except factory reset?

I got this exact problem and resolved it by doing the following:

SETTINGS > Mobile networks > Access Point Names

The screen was blank when I did this, but just by doing this, everything started to work again for me.

Hi all,

Still waiting for Virgin to release an update, it's getting beyond a joke now even with the Signal Reset tool.

I have found that calling my mobile from a landline or other phone allows it to receive any backlog of texts randomly. It seems to do a refresh of the network that even going in and out of Airplane Mode doesn't help with.

Random.

Just phoned Virgin and eventually got through to a very helpful engineer who knew all about the late texts problem as he actually has a Desire S himself. He told me that Virgin are still waiting for HTC to brand the 'latest' version of the Android update (released in the last couple of weeks, after the October one) for them before they can release it.

He also said that as they use T-Mobile settings then it'll be same same release date for their update.

I asked if it'd realistically be out before Christmas and he said it should 'hopefully' be out in the next week or so.

As I say he was a decent guy and as I say knew exactly what I was talking about but unfortunately he didn't instil in me any confidence that I'll see this update any time soon. :-/

Yes also on t-mobile, no update yet.

Rang them (again) today. Got transferred to tech support (rather than just the customer service support who tell you to turn it on & off etc). They said yes they're aware of the issue but no update release date yet but said he didn't work on updates so would check the latest and ring me back today.

Will let you know where they're at if I get any more info.

Also wondering where I stand paying 25/month with the only carrier to not have fixed it yet, feel I should really be getting a mega reduction, any one else asked about that?

T mobile customers get ringing & push them..!

My network provider (talkmobile) haven't pushed the update out yet either. I called them but the woman insisted it's HTC who send push the updates out, in her words 'I have a HTC and that's what happens'.

Anyway, I got fed up and sent it back to HTC for repair. Came back with the latest firmware and all seems to be working fine. I was a little worried after hearing what people had been saying about sending their phones to HTC. However, I sent it on Friday, tracked it and it arrived at HTC Monday, and it was back with me on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

My wife got a ds about three weeks ago. She started having problems after about a week. The o2 network kept going off. The only way she could get it back on again was to go to settings then wireless networks then press o2 then t- mobile then back to o2 after that it would come on. She got her phone from buy mobiles . Net . She tried a new sim card , still the same. She has phoned buy mobiles . Net. They are going to phone back on Monday . She should get a new phone as it is under 28 days. Don't know if this will solve the problem.

It's a software issue so the only way a new phone will solve it is if it either has the updated software or she gets a different phone.

I thought o2 had pushed out the update? Has she checked for updates?

Still no update from T-mobile. My Desire S is brand-spanking new (mid-november) and I've been having these problems from the word go. After trying all kind of fixes I'm glad I've found and read through this thread, but I can't understand what's taking T mobile so long. Will try another phone call tomorrow.

Anyone still waiting should take matters into their own hands. There is plenty of information on this thread (and often repeated) as to your options, but you do have them from fixing it yourself to changing to a different model of handset.

you wanna solve your disconnections problem ? switch to vodafone...at least that worked for me...but then i live in malta...i changed sim card...got all the latest updates available...nothing worked...now i`ve come to the conclusion that the problem all along was the carrier

Indeed. I just thought it might be helpful for others watching this thread to confirm that another T-mobile customer hasn't received an update yet. Another unhelpful call to T-mobile later and they're knocking some of the cost of my contract off, and claiming the update will be pushed out soon. No harm in keeping people up to date with what's going on! Should the issue continue much longer (only had it since mid-november) I'll obviously have to take further action.

Yes, we can take matters into our own hands by rooting or partially rooting the phone (instructions great thanks!) I just haven't had time. Really T mobile (who I pay my money to) should be doing the messing around for me!

I reckon taking the matter into our own hands also means as many people as possible complaining to T mobile, threatening to leave the only UK carrier not to have provided the fix yet and getting money off our contracts...

So to help with that here's some key words to help more folks find this thread and ring them!!

T mobile Desire S late texts messages coming late arriving late delayed text messages 2.3.5 update no signal lost problems doesn't find signal low poor reception bars going up and down dropped calls etc!!

there we go that should do it...

edited: rang today still have no release date they've halved price of my contract for next 3 months meantime..

I find that I my calls and texts arrive late or go through to voicemail when I'm connected to Mobile Internet. I think my HTC Desire S, when its connected to the internet, gets into its head that its a computer and answering calls and texts are a bit beneath it! What I just do is have the mobile widget on my home screen so I only have it - and only it - switched on when and if I need to use the internet and then switch it off if I'm not. When its switched off I still get calls and texts, the signal is fine and the plus side is the battery lasts a lot longer. I've also made sure that my mobile signal is GSM only as that is more reliable, though a bit slower.

Okay, I guess that some other people would think that it should be able to manage to do all things together but seeing as my last phone was a Nokia 5800 XPressMusic and I have this one on a good deal then maybe I'm happy to compromise a bit and I still love all the things that it can do and so am prepared to put up with some of the little glitches it does have as no phone is perfect. Compared to phones a couple of years old, these are still amazing phones. Anyway, I work on computers at work all day and they keep crashing and photocopiers get jammed with paper so I guess smartphones are going to play up anyway!

As Scotty said in Star Trek once "The more they try to overtake the plumbing, the easier it is to block up the drains"

Hi, T-mobile HTC Desire S user here. Been having the signal dropping issue for months. Here is my latest conversation with HTC. No help whatsoever, but at least they know I'm pissed off with them now. Think I'll be rooting the phone myself at this rate.

Kaylee: I understand you are currently experiencing signal issues with your device and delayed text messages.
Kaylee: Can you please confirm have you tried your sim card in another device or a different sim card in your device?
XXXX: yes i have
XXXX: and it is not a coverage issue
Kaylee: Ok. I would suggest to perform a factory reset on your device. A factory reset normally resolves any bugs or gliches in the software. It will refresh the software.
XXXX: i would really rather avoid having to do another factory reset, i have had to do it once before for another problem i had. I also know for a fact that it will not solve this problem, unless it updates the software version from 1.47
XXXX: which i'm sure can be done without a factory reset
Kaylee: I am sorry to hear this.
Kaylee: You can check for software updates on the device by going to Menu, Settings, About Phone, Software Information, Check Now
XXXX: it says there are no updates available.
XXXX: for information, I am on Android version 2.3.3, HTC Sense version 2.1 and software number 1.47.110.3
Kaylee: Ok I see. All I can suggest is to perform a factory reset. There are no further updates that have been released.
XXXX: Can you please check your records for other people who have reported this problem and found a solution? There are a lot of people on this forum who have had the same problem: Signal drops completely - HTC Desire S
Kaylee: I will pass your feedback along.
Kaylee: Unfortunately I cannot look at online forums. I do not have access.
Kaylee: Is there anything else I can help you with today?
XXXX: i have read that Sense 3.0 has been released and have seen it on a friend's HTC
XXXX: why have i not had this update?
Kaylee: I can confirm that it has been released. As you can appreciate it cannot reach all devices at once. Therefore it is a rolling process.
Kaylee: All I can suggest is to keep searching for the update.
Kaylee: Is there anything else I can help you with today?
XXXX: Could you also pass on the message that I will not be buying another HTC as I have had endless problems with it, and seemingly this one cannot be solved without rooting the phone and downgrading the sofware to a previous version
XXXX: which is not very satisfactory
XXXX: this issue makes my phone extremely unreliable, and people regularly cannot get through to me
Kaylee: I am sorry that you feel this way. I completely understand your frustration and dissapointment with regards.
Kaylee: I will pass your feedback along.
XXXX: i cannot believe that HTC are not aware of this widespread issue
XXXX: can you just confirm for me that there have been other reports of this issue?
XXXX: as i know people have reported it
Kaylee: Yes I have come across similar issues before.
XXXX: were you able to resolve them?
Kaylee: Unfortunately not. I have been forwarding information to our escalations department for further investigation however unfortunately as of yet there is no solution.
XXXX: OK, so HTC are looking into the problem then.
XXXX: As I said, i will not consider HTC the next time I upgrade. Thanks for your time, though
Kaylee: Thank you for contacting us. I hope you have a great day.

Yes. Me. I'm with Virgin Mobile which uses T-Mobile. Is that the same thing?
I have a Desire S on 2.3.5 after the update and today I had the drop out thing happen for the first time. I worked out it was a phone problem and restarted it. All ok after that. Does this happen a lot? I'd been playing with bluetooth pairing to my new car and didn't realise I had no signal so thought it wasn't a compatible phone, but after the restart it fired up first time. Joy!
I thought it was maybe because I had wifi and bluetooth all on at the same time, , but apparently not.

I am also experiencing these issues - it's so frustrating. I am with O2.

I am on a Desire S, which I rooted when I received it in Nov 2011. I have been runnning MIUI ever since. It worked fine until the end of Jan 2012, when the signal issues started happening. It seems to have signal until you touch it. When you pick it up, the signal drops to 0 and an X is displayed. There's a couple of places in London where it all works fine, and I guess these must be areas of extremely strong O2 signal. Everywhere else, it's intermittent at best.

So far the steps I have tried to rectify it are as follows:-

1. Flashing various radios - I have tried 4 radios so far, and all exhibit the same issues.
2. Returning to original ROM - this was done with the shipped radio, and stil lthe same issues arose
3. Wiping and trying a fresh Cyanogen 7 install - same issues
4. Wiping and trying a fresh Endymion 3.4 install - same issues

So now I am back on MIUI 2.2.17 wondering what else I can try. Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers!

UPDATE - I've now tried practically everything described here, and the phone still won't get a good connection to O2...

5. RUU downgrade to RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.28.401.1_Radio_20.28b.30.080 5U_38.03.02.11_M_release - same issues
6. RUU flash to RUU_Saga_O2_UK_1.31.206.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_38 .03.02.14_M_release - still no joy
7. Flashed back to the generic European version, as the O2 version seems to be for another country (voicemail shortcut is 123).
8. Throughout the changes, I have tried the various "preferred network type" options in the *#*#4636#*#* menu, to no avail.

So now my phone is totally stock, and with the 1.28.401.1 ROM, which is how it originally came, and it is still exhibiting these issues. If I scan for networks, it shows Orange, T-Mobile, 3 and Vodafone, but no O2.

I have sent a message to HTC asking them about this, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or recommendations?

Shock Horror i cant believe this

I have a T-Mobile branded Desire S & have been experiencing the same issues as all of you for months & have tried various things apart from the whole rooting thing.

Lost count of the amount of time spent on the phone to HTC & T-mobile with T-mobile stating they dont have an update & dont know when they will get one out.

So in order to amuse them & so that maybe they would exchange the handset I gave the phone into a store for repair a couple of weeks ago.

Got it back yesterday & to my complete shock

they have upgraded the software to 2.3.5 with Sense 3

how the hell did they manage that if they are saying the update isnt ready.

but hey it looks like its on there, will see over the next few days whether my issues still exist.

cheers

Default Same Problem here...

Drop outs especially over night, when I really need my phone connected to a network at all times. (That's kind of the point of a mobile phone really isn't it? Not something you just play games on )

I am on T-Mobile with Desire S

Can anyone explain why the update isn't available to people experiencing the problem?

Hi guys,

I have had this issue since recieving my new Desire S which incidently was a replacement for the previous Desire which is now discontinued.

When I first reported it I was given the usual spiel of "try another sim card, try your sim card in a different hand set, try a new sim card, try resetting your phone etc etc".

Eventually someone in the T-Mobile store admitted there is a problem with the software I am running and the simple solution is to upgrade it to the latest.

This in itself poses a problem however being as my phone hasn't offered me the chance to update my software manually, no one in the T-Mobile stores have the laptops containing the software that they all claim the other stores have ("Oh we havent got one here, but if you travel to X store then they do" - "They sent you to us? no we don't have it, try Y store another 30 miles away" and so on).

I eventually gave up trawling the net and only finding unofficial versions to download, or people suggesting rooting your phone and countless others saying they couldnt restart their phones after, so rang T Mobile customer services for a bit of a rant.

The chap I spoke to in technical services spent ages on the net trying to find a version I could download but eventually gave up and gave me HTC's number to call (and kindly gave me 20 credit to ring them as it's an 0870 number).

I rang HTC and they firstly suggested the following > Go to the settings menu and about phone. Go into the software updates and try searching there firstly. It didn't offer me an update at this point to he suggested changing the date on the phone to 6 months in advance, and switching the phone off and trying again. This did not work either for me and instead just reset the phones date back to the correct one (Apparently this is something built into the T Mobile branded software). So, the next step was to check my software version (2.3.3) and then they offered me to send my phone in for them to upgrade it for me. They have emailed me some documents to print off to send with my phone and also are paying a courier to come collect it, free of charge. They admitted it was a fault with the software so the upgrade will all be free as it's under the warranty.
As long as the phone has no water damage, broken screens, cameras etc then they will fix it for free for me.

All being well when I get my phone back in a few weeks time it'll be fixed and upgraded and not have cost me anything other than the inconvenience of not having my phone for 2 weeks.

All in all i cannot fault the people i spoke to at either T Mobile or HTC, all were very polite and tried to solve the problem with me before taking my phone away.

Hope this is of some help to others in the same situation.

Thanks for taking the time to update us. It seems odd that they want to pick up the phone for a software update. Surely they must be able to do this online somehow. What a pain to have to send it off for two weeks!

Hi guys,

Just to let you know, my problem has been resolved. HTC asked me to send the phone in so I sent it back fully S-ON with Stock Sense etc. They sent it back to me within the week fully operational, albeit with a new mainboard and various internals. The new HBOOT is 2.00.0002 so I'm not sure if there's a straightforward way to root at this stage.

It looks like there might be a fault with certain mainboards in the Desire S. I have friends who have been using one for a long time with no errors, but a bunch of us on here have the same signal fault. My recommendation would be to see if HTC will take a look at it under warranty - make sure you have it in S-ON state to be safe.

Hope that helps!
