Not just the widgets. The homescreen and phone dialer are the biggest differences. The Sense UI is a big skin which gives the fugly Android a nice glassy black finish. Also provides some good apps like FriendSteam (Facebook & Twitter combined), Music, Photos, etc.
I wouldn't buy an Android phone without it even with some of these alternatives like LauncherPro.
