Sad HTC Desire music/video headphones audio problem please help

Yes, i have a HTC Desire phone brand new..i plugged the headphones in and cannot get audio from either my music or videos..it works for calls and notifications but not for music and videos..it also uas like a white headset icon in the notification bar also..i have no third party apps, but tried them n still no result..ajd i tried using othe ueadphones and still no solution. Really trying to avoid going in for repair so any solutions?

But you can hear calls through headphones?

Does media play through speaker?

yes the media plays through speakers, just not through any headphones

I have an htc desire as well, and I'm having the same issue. It's a problem with Android 2.1 I believe. If another noise that isn't the music player occurs, the audio will stop, even if it says its still playing. Restarting the phone is a temporary fix. Twitter is what usually sets it off for me.
