Unhappy icons at top of screen

can anyone help, I have a previously unseen icon at the top of my screen next to the 3G and signal and battery icons. It is a rectangle tilted to the side with a couple of dashes on either side. Can any one explain what this is?

That's the icon for silent mode. It's supposed to be a vibrating phone, meaning that notifications and calls will only vibrate and not play ringtones.
