Can't think of a hardware way around this unless you are handy with a soldering iron. Maybe this won't even help. Is the phone out of warranty?
The only (sort of) other solution I can think of is to root the phone and install a custom rom. This will allow other buttons to switch on the phone. I used to use the trackpad to switch mine on. Reboots will also be easier with widgets once you've rooted.
Maybe this is possible unrooted but I'm not aware of a way.
