Interesting comments about the Chinese government using Hawei products to spy on other countries LOL
The launcher looks pretty slow on that, hope that's software rather than hardware issue as older videos show the phone running total stock ICS and running it very smoothly. The launcher didn't look too nice either but thats easily fixed with Nova/Apex etc.

If they just add a launcher then that's easily replaced, hope they don't start touching other areas though.

Be interesting to see how it performs when its releases.

Default It's a sad day...

Finally realised I can't afford either a GS3, or an Ascend. Or even a 1X. Now looking at a GS2. Great I'm upgrading to LAST YEARS phone.... Talk about a step back. I'd be lucky if I can afford that. Knowing my luck I'll end up worth a Nokia 3210.

How the mighty have fallen.

Now leave me while a curl up in a corner and cry...

There is rumors of the One X getting a price cut once the s3 launches, prepare to dry your eyes & pray.

No interest in the 1X at all, but thanks anyway.

Well if you can wait a little longer there's an interesting rumour from the WSJ: Google Changes Tack on Android - WSJ.com

But if Google are specifying I'd not hold out too much hope for removable storage.

I like that approach Hadron! I've long wanted Android phones to be running Android and not have shed-loads of stuff added by the operators. Why don't O2, Voda, EE and 3 just get on with running their s*dding networks and leave our handsets alone?

And hopefully by cutting out the middle man the prices would come down too.

As an outright purchase, sure but don't forget those of us who get "free" handsets on contracts are essentially buying the devices subsudised so those who still cannot afford the cheaper full price outright may still be missing out.

Well the choice has been made......

As a happy compromise between specs, and price, I'll be taking delivery of a shiny new white Galaxy S2 tomorrow.

Yeah I know it's last years flagship, but when it comes down to it, there's not a great deal of difference, not for me anyway, between the S2, and S3.

Still an awesome piece of kit, and if I was to upgrade last year, this is what i would have had.

Only 6 p/m more than I'm paying now, so wifey is happy.

Andy.

26 p/m

300 Mins (More than enough for me)
Unlimited Texts
500MB Data.
Free Phone.

Should be 31 P/M with 30 for the phone.

Same tariff as my Desire, and I've hardly ever gone over the 500MB surprisingly.

Seems a bit much for last year's phone.
Considering my Xperia S is 28.50 for :
600min
Unlimited texts. (they say unlimited, more like 3000 p/m)
1gb net
Free BT wifi when out and about.
Phone for free

Aye I know, that's what I've always done since day one. But I dropped O2 this week and got myself all GiffGaff'd up, so I may be looking at a different strategy for my next upgrade.... that's if the missus lets me.

only thing the Experia has going for it as far as I can see is the camera. The rest is average at best to me. Personal choice I guess. The S2 ticked pretty much every box for me.

Got myself a 3UK pay as you go. 15 quid, 300 mins, 3000 texts unlimited data. Not as good as giff gaff but if the signal is ok, will pac my o2 number over (code already received) use that for 3 months until the d quad then contact with 3.

Hoping 3UK signal is good as I don't have a plan b. Would giff gaff if I could buy a handset but I.can't

I've just ordered a giff gaff sim card, but I'm also looking at the same 15 payg sims on 3 that you have got. Why haven't you gone with giff gaff? I don't understand your comment about buying a handset.

One thing I will say though - I've been reading the forums on the giff gaff website, and it seems their 'unlimited' deal is subject to a fair use policy, and some users have been banned for having the audacity to take the term literally and stream video as though it was unlimited. Some are saying that they should have a fair use cap at 2GB! On the other hand, apparently three have a fair usage cap on their unlimited, of 2TB per month.

I think 2TB would just about do me.

I got a 3 sim to test the signal where it matters to me. I got payg to test but I will not stay payg. As soon as a handset I want is available, I will be going straight back on contract as I cannot afford to buy one.

That's why I haven't gone to giff gaff

I'm in exactly the same boat - I won't be forking out 500 up front for a phone, even if it is a better deal in the long run.

But giff gaff is payg, isn't it? Ah, I see, you are trying the 3 sim in case you want to take out a contact with them.

Right, its done.

Signal was fine. Had to top up to find the internet responsiveness. It was good also.

PAC'd my number over. Thats it, I'm gone from O2.

Now my only worry.... Did that blip in November when I went from Weekly pay to Monthly pay cost me on my credit rating? Will I be able to get a new contract? Arrggghhh

Either way, there was no way I could stay with O2.

Well I've got till October to decide, and I'm in a very lucky position that my mate works at voda and gets me a discount, so hopefully by then ill know what's worth having! I must admit though that the s3 would be my choice at the minute, but i am put off by the older processor. We will see.

Strangely that is why I went with GG.
I could well end up back on an O2 contract when the good shi... er ... tech hits the street.
GG is on the O2 network so I already know how good the signal is around here... and I know it sounds funny but I actually get 1 bar more in the house now than with the O2 sim.
Also PAYG 10, 250 mins (more than enough for me), unlimited texts and data - not really an opportunity a true Aberdonian can pass up.

If you time it right giffgaff could be an option in the future. They offer payback for signing recruits and posting in the community. I went with an 18 month contract last time, 6 months on giffgaff and I've raised more than enough payback for my new S3

Maybe not now su but next phone time if you don't go for a 24 month contract. A bit of work leaving sims in local shops/hairdressers etc and you'd soon make it back.

I had a brief play in a phone shop this morning. It was noticeably more fluid than the One X in the next display.

None of the benchmarks I've seen include the xperia s. I saw one with the one XL which is also Qualcomm s4 and that had s better overall score than the gs3....

How did you think it felt and looked? I know a lot of people are being negative about the plasticky finish.

Well I received my Galaxy SIII on the 30th and I'm very pleased with it.

I was worried that I would find it too big, being used to the Desire, and having quite small hands, but it feels great in the hand (omg I can feel the double entendres coming on again...). As to the 'plasticy feel' I think it feels nice and quite classy in fact.

I've sadly sold on my Desire to a friend. It's nice that I'll still be able to visit it when I want, and keep in touch, and my friend is well pleased with what I still feel is an awesome device.

In reply to the title of this thread, I would definitely recommend the SIII as a worthy replacement for the Desire. It's fast and expandable with no storage headaches, it's got that all-so-essential removable battery, and the developer base is already hitting the floor running.

Over on XDA there is a guide to rooting it using a utility called Odin, Chainfire has ported Clockworkmod recovery, and there is already a custom rom available.

I'm going to wait a while before rooting it, maybe making sure I can return to stock unrooted in case the phone needs replacing under warranty, but I am nevertheless excited about my new phone, and hope that it will serve me as well as did my Desire.

Thank you all for the help you have given freely during my time here. It will be interesting to see where all the Desire's children grow up and move to. A number have already flown the coop and moved to the One X, and now the SIII is out, there is a real candidate for a replacement. I was really considering the Ascend D Quad XL but Huwawei are just taking too long to release it, especially since they demoed the phone months ago, and so now I have made my choice. I may possibly feel a pang of doubt when the Ascend comes out, but I have my new Samsung as consolation. So no regrets here.

Thank you.

Dave

Dave has given a much better answer than I could, but as far as you can judge the feel of a phone wrapped in cable ties and anti-theft tags it felt fine. Looks seem very clean and simple. The white seemed nice. The only blue I found was held down by a metal frame so I couldn't get a good look at the back. I think it might take a little longer for me to be sure of that one.

I might slightly prefer the finish of the One X, but I don't have any problems with the SGS3 in that respect.

Although I haven't seen the back of the pebble blue model in the flesh either, I now think it might not be as nice as the white. To me, the back of the white model reminds me of - I was trying to think what it reminds me of, in order to describe it - it reminds me of enamel, not the 'cheap glossy plastic' that was described everywhere upon its unveiling.

It turns out to be the Samsung Galaxy S3 for me. The Ascend D Quad XL never shows, and I was able to get a lot of money for my Desire in the reclamation process.
Right now the S3 is the best phone out there for me, in relation to my needs.

HTC are in the process of doing what i said they would do, they will be releasing a new rom in the next 2 weeks. The devs over at xda have baked the beta ruu into a rom, this new rom finally uses the ICS kernel instead of the current gingerbread one.
Benchmarks are on par with the SGS3 with the added advantage of improved battery life & something that the SGS3 can't compete with, the low power 5th core on the HOX.
Should be pretty interesting to get new benchmarks to compare when the RUU for the HOX is finally released, may be worth waiting a little while longer if you haven't already chosen yet.

Actually you're wrong. It does compete. Sgs3 battery life is amazing.

SGS3 has lots of other power saving technology built in that HTC has not.

Also with a custom kernel, we have hotplug which dynamically switches cores on or off. I actually think the HTC struggles to compete on any level when it comes to power saving.

Once Samsung. Fix the cell standby issue (which even with, battery life thrashes desire with dGB) there's not even going to be a comparrison.

If you Google sgs3 one x battery life, people who owned both have stated that the sgs3 wins

Also curious.
I understand it varies with usage though, screen shot?

It's hard to quantify right now but I'm getting at least an hour more screen on with at least 20% more left than dgb

Very impressive considering the big screen and quad core.

after seeing it in the flesh and SU's comments I'm all but sold on the SGS3. One question is the screen - every ones says this screen is inferior to the One X. I couldn't tell, but I do read alot of books, would this be worse on the S3? Would I even notice?

I have read that too. To be honest, I have been looking at the screen intensely and it really is truly beautiful. The 720p is crystal clear. Watching videos is an immense experience. It completely blows anything Ive ever seen out of the water (ive never looked at the One X screen).
