Can I buy the UK Desire and use it on a US network?
Sorry guys, kinda new to the whole networks overseas game. Is it possible to buy the European version of this phone and use it on say ATT or T-Mobile, or is that not an option? Thanks for any help.
For regular talking, yes, I often take my phone to the US, and use T-mobile over there.
For 3G, you have to check what bands the phone supports and see which network supports those bands.

Yes, you can definitely talk on the phone with it.
However it won't be able to surf at 3G speeds, because Europe and the States use different frequencies for 3G. You'll get 2G (aka GPRS) surfing speeds instead.
I thought at least one of the companies had the same frequencies as Europe?
I know at least that people have imported the Nexus One, and it works with 3G here.
AT&T uses 850/1900; T-Mobile US uses 1700/2100. Verizon and Sprint use technologies which are more or less unused (abandoned) outside of America.
However, most of the operators in the world use 1900/2100 for 3G, so you're out of luck.
The Nexus One is supports tri-band 3G (1700/1900/2100) so that's why 3G works on T-Mobile US and other operators around the world. The HTC Desire though is only dual-band 3G (900/2100) which is mainly used in Europe and Asia so it's not 3G compatible in the US
But it's the technical stuff that's interesting. Desire supports 2100, and so does t-Mobile, but maybe it needs to support both bands?

3G uses paired bands for downloading and uploading data, for Europe/Asia, the uplink is 1900 and the downlink is 2100. T-Mobile US' uplink is 1700 and the downlink is 2100
Kind of strange why they (US) doesn't let operators share the same band. It makes the porting of phones a lot easier and allows for more competition - if you're not satisfied you can keep your phone and jump boat.

Saddly it's all about the $$ over here... early termination fees and the like. Wish we had the European system... people would be a lot happier just picking a device and being able to use it on the service they choose. Over here it's wait and see who gets the phone you like then either pay the termination fee or simply wait it out and jump ship later.
