Default SD card Damaged

Hi Guys

So im getting a problem with my new desire.

I have my SD card full of music, well not full, around 3gbs worth synced with Silling media sync (itunes playlist syncer)

i plug it into my car stereo via USB the stereo is the Alpine X305 which plays mp3 etc from USB drive.

The phone works at first, plays the music etc all day long, but when i come to get out of the car and disconnect the USB from the phone, the desire comes up with:

Preparing SD card then SD card damaged, you will need to format the SD card

I tried this again with a freshly formatted SD card and it does the same every time the phone is unplugged

This is a major pain for me, any ideas?

Cheers

Don't suppose you could try a different SD card?

You know I've had major issues with the one that came with the phone. I have my own 8gb so I gave my gf the 4gb that came with the phone to use with her new hero.

But I get the same as you, keeps saying the sdcard has been damaged and even that there is no sdcard in the phone. This is on the Hero with the Desire sdcard. I have even reformatted it and still get the same errors.

I wonder if the sdcards they provided with the phone are below par quality wise.. My old 2GB sdcard that came with the Hero still works fine.

Maybe go back to the place you bought it from and explain about the sdcard, this is what i'm planning to do anyway.

Well my supplied SD card became damaged yesterday and I hadnt even been doing anything with the phone! My PC cannot even see the card and although my laptop can see it it only reports the capacity of 30mb and will not reformat it.
Never known an sd card to get damaged that quickly befoer they truely must be rubbish which is a shame for such an awsome phone. I hope they havent used any other cheap bits in the actual build of the phone

A little update, i think i may have sorted this.

My SD card is a Sandisk 4gb SDHC card so you would have thought that the quality of this card should be ok??

I removed my battery and took out the card using the ridge and my finger nail and it just come out, like the sim card.

However when i put the SD card back in it seems to Click in with a full push.

I plugged it into my car stereo and when i removed it it prepaired the SD card without Failure.

Im just syncing some music to the phone now, then ill test again fully and report back

Is it possible that your car stereo is not cleanly unmounting the SD Card? I know my car stereo and a few other devices do it on another phone of mine. If you plug the SD Card into a non windows computer (Linux, Mac etc) does it do the same? Have youi searched the model of your car stereo to see if anyone else is having any issues. I am not saying that it is not Android or the Phone, but to me it sounds like the OS is protecting the card (and potentially you) from an uncleanly mounted Filesystem.

Ok i tried another SD card and i've got the same problem, so its pointing towards a unclean unmount.

Can anybody advise of any way to unmount from the desire end, or an application to give the same effect

I found this option exactly 10 seconds after posting my last, i should have edited!

Is there anyway to put this into a shortcut? what i could put on the homescreen for example?

Edit:

That option is not availible while my stereo is plugged in, its greyed out, i think im just going to accept that this phone doesent work with my stereo, which is a shame as the sound quality is great while it works (the first time)

Even when i turned the stereo off, it swapped the mode to Charge only then 2 beeps and the Damaged SD card msg again

Im getting exactly the same.

I keep getting the SD card removed error or occasionally the SD card is damaged and needs reformatting - I try to reformat if this appears on the phone but it doesnt work.

The problems started when the phone would be active (alarm would go off, or it would ring) but the display wouldnt switch on from standby when i pressed the power button.

I reboot and get the SD card error after the blank disply issue. A full reset has not solved the problem and now with every boot im getting SD card removed.

I had a class 2 sandisk 4gb supplied with it - I have another class 4 8gb that came with my nokia 5800 - both now give the same problems and work fine in a PC.

Any ideas? The phone has been working for 4 days OK previously.

totally new to this so go easy.
exactly the same happened to me when i tried to connect my phone(htc desire) to my alpine head unit.
not wanting to keep copy data back onto card i only tried this once but it worked, bit of a pain mind.
i noticed that the sd card said damaged, when i would turn the keys off to the car,so just unplugged the phone direct from the usb without turning the ignition off and the sd card did not say damaged.
only tried this once mind.
what is the app called auto mount would that help????

I'm having this issue with a 16gb Kingston card. Trying to sync my music from my mac to my Desire via various methods - Drag and drop through the finder (explorer), Missing Sync and Doubletwist. All end up the same, and as said before points to the SD card not unmounting properly. Starting to get a bit concerned that its possibly an issue with the phone?

No issues here with the supplied card.

Have you tried selecting the "runs as mass storage" option under settings with your stereo carbon angel?

Just an update to my issue if this helps anyone - phone swapped out next day today and now works fine.

The same SD card was put in the new phone and worked fine whereas it wouldn't accept it at all on the old phone.

Looks as if it was a faulty phone/SD card slot.

I've swapped my 16gb out to the supplied 4gb card and it seems to work fine. My 16gb was a class 2 and the 4gb is a class 4 so I don't know if thats got anything to do with it.
I suspect that the card I was using is to blame rather than the phone though...

This sounds identical to my problem. I have noticed that it does take a little while for the phone to find all the files on the card even when it works. However, I have had the same problem with the 16gb card when a 4gb works fine. I'm swapping my card for a replacement so we'll see if that makes any difference.

Yes the phone takes a while to find files, but it will find them all. Took a few mins to find my 3gb of pics and music loaded up on the card.

I've just done some more digging and am now concerned that I may have a counterfeit card on my hands. It purports to be a Kingston 16gb class 2 card, but it has no serial number on it, only on the packaging - and also it is marked Micro SD rather than SDHC, which is a bit worrying. Have checked the packaging and sure enough it originated in China, so am now thinking I may have a dodgy card on my hands.
Will chase the seller and see if a more genuine-looking card doesn't solve the problem!

You guessed it!
I haven't checked to see if mine's hacked, but it looks counterfeit now I've looked properly.
I too sent a polite email to the seller making it clear that I wasn't accusing them of selling counterfeit goods (yeah right) and that they might want to check their stock etc...
Hopefully will get refunded soon!

I have the same problem. I bought my desire 10 days ago (in Sweden) and got my SD Card damaged after a few days. The same scenario as you. And it was impossible to format it. So I went back to the well renowned store and they gave me a brand new 8GB SD Card. And the problem persists. The SD Card is getting corrupted every day. Always after being connected to a computer or battery charger. But it is at least possible to format it.

So now I suspect my phone might be bad.

They seem to have been in a hurry to get this one out to market.

Perfectly normal - but worth starting a new thread not piggybacking on another thread about something completely different!

Back on topic, I have a SD card corruption problem:

Phone was misbehaving earlier (headphone socket not working) so rebooted while it was still playing an MP3.

On coming back up just said "SD card corrupted". Reseated card and tried it in another Hero with no joy. Using a card reader on a laptop I can read it fine apart from one folder.

Is this likely to be Android not dismounting properly before shutting down or a dodgy card?

It is a branded SanDisk SDHC 8GB Class 2 card that I bought from Play.com and has worked flawlessly for 9 months.

Going to try chkdsk first, then maybe a format if I can;t get the other files off.

Thoughts?

As soon as the card arrives run H2testw on it to ensure it is the correct size.

I have bought two fake cards on eBay before which weren't hacked they were of poor construction. Both of which crumbled in devices and I was lucky for them to not jam. Obviously I lost all of my data.

Mine is a genuine Sandisk 8GB microSD HC bought from Play, not a marketplace seller. I ended up copying off the non-corrupted files, formatting and testing using h2testw (came up fine), and reinstalling everything.

Sometimes even doing everything by the book doesn't help...

Like many people I too am having problems with a card that I have never had a problem with before.

Surely this is happening way too often and leads more to a device or software issue...

Hi. I am having the same problem. I bought an 16GB SDHC card class II. I am transferring music to it from my PC, and then when I disconnect, it seems alright to start with, then later it says 'damaged SD card' and allows you to reformat it. I done this several times before I thought it was a faulty card. I exchanged it for a new from where I bought it from, and still the same.

I don't suppose anyone has contacted HTC directly about this issue?

I have emailed them at HTC Mobile Phones - Product Support - Smartphones Help

If I find out anything, I will post it here.

Thanks for that - it will be really useful, I'm sure.

Cheap 32 gig cards from Hong Kong; I paid 25.50 (delivered) for mine, tho had to do a full format (about2 hours ) to make it behave! HK great for eBay, BTW, no customs duty, takes 1 -2 weeks. Just check feedback carefully before buying. Oh, & look for auctions finishing 0200 -0400 then snipe 'em

Finally, *DON'T* just pull the card out! Push it in gently, and it clicks out a couple of mm so you can then just slide it out.

I am pondering changing the card in my phone, would class 2 be OK for the likes of music or would it be better to go for a class 4 or 6?

On the card there is a lot of stuff that seems to be supplied on it, should I just copy it all over to the new card and all will be fine regarding contacts and backups etc?

It'll be fine if you just copy it over - contacts are stored on the phone so no need to worry about that.

As for speed, not sure. TBH I find the OS the limiting factor on mine with a few apps installed...

Your card wont be 32gb.

Once you reach it's real limit (like 4 or 8gb), your card will die and all data on it will be lost.

My problem seems to be a combination of some of the issues being talked about here. I have a 32gb (allegedly) SD card, bought on ebay from Hong Kong at a very low price. If, for example, I just have 2gb of stuff on it, it works fine. However, if I drag and drop more stuff on to it, eventually it doesn't let any more stuff on it, even though it says there's more space. Then when I remove the device from my PC, the SD card is damaged. Desire worked fine with the supplied SD card, so unfortunately I too am now going to have to send a polite but firm email to the seller and hope for the best!

No idea why people still do this. The advice is absolutely everywhere. Never buy memory cards from anyone but a very highly reputable seller. Never buy cards above about 8 gig from anyone but the major brands (Sandisk, Kingston, Integral etc).

There is simply no way to lower the costs of SD cards too much as there is no way to produce them cheaply. On 32 gigabyte cards you're looking at a device that packs over 3000 memory units across the width of a human hair. You cannot cut corners on the production, so new cheap cards are fake. No exceptions. There simply isn't a viable method of producing nanoscale electronics that undercuts the one used by Sandisk at the moment.

Welli've just had a similar problem, plugged phone into PC copied a picture off the PC then I click on the "safely remove hardware" and it said safe to remove but after unplugging I'm getting message that SD card is damaged and I need to reformat, when I plug into a PC I don't even get the option to view as a hard disk (or whatever it says)

This isn't the SD card which came with the HTC Desire, when I discovered the Desire had the same 4gb micro SD I had in my old Nokia I just swapped the SD's over so I could keep all the pictures & music on it. Just slightly annoyed now that I took about 10 pictures over the weekend which I may have now lost hoping when I get home my old phone will read it. Pity "Lookout" didn't backup as its supposed to every Monday night!

Now a bit worried after reading this thread that the phone might be at fault may have to try the original SD for a bit and do plenty of plugging in and ejecting from PC

I have the same problem with the original HTC Desire 4GB memory card too, luckily I have a 16GB from my old phone that I use but I stuck the 4GB into my old phone and it fails to format it everytime saying that its corrupt. I have been able to format it in my PC but when I tried to fill it up I got a write error message in Windows, so it seems a bad card.... Might try and claim it under the warranty as I only had the phone for 2 weeks! Phone is great though.

had a similar issue whereby i have had my 8GB Sandisk (bought from Play.com) working lovely for about 2 months, then i changed SD cards for an hour to get some pictures off old one and upon rebooting with the 8GB back in the phone gets caught up in a boot loop. Doesn't do so with the original 4GB card or the 2GB that had the photos on.

Have tried formatting on a laptop, no use, really not sure what to try next so might play about with it in Clockwork Mod Recovery but its a bit annoying as love having tons of ROMS for psx4Droid! lol

Anyone with a damaged sd card should email HTC and ask for a replacement. Mine stopped working and they have sent me a free replacement one which was nice.

(ps the one that stopped working was a 4GB Samsung, the new one is a 4GB SanDisk all working fine atm)
