AFAIK, there is no actual Skype application available ( yet ) but you can download and install fring. This is also a VOIP application, but fring lets you access your Skype account, so in effect, you can use Skype on the Desire. fring also lets you onto your MSN account ( plus a few others too ! )

3 Mobile should have a client for it soon, if they don't already.

I have just received the HTC Desire from Three. It was supposed to come pre-loaded with Skype, Planet 3, Spotify, etc. but true to form nada! Phoned them up and they sent me a text link to download Skype which I did and I then set up my account. So far so good, but then it would not allow me to import any Skype contacts. When you try to search the Skype directory it goes on an endless search. I phoned them back up and 'eventually' I was told that although Skype is now downloadable they are still having some teething problems which should be ironed out in the next week (waiting and baited breath comes to mind), hence the reason I cannot access the Skype directory.

Later I went to the local Three shop and the girl there who is always very helpful and quite knowledgeable phoned her husband (works for Three) who also confirmed that Skype is not working correctly as he had the same problem, but confirmed that he downloaded some 3rd party app from Android which works Skype fine.

She told me that the HTC Desire Three phones with all the pre-loads on will not be rolled out until June. The ones everyone are receiving now are directly from HTC with nothing pre-loaded.

I'm off to South Africa in June and was hoping my Skype would be working OK so that I can link in with wi-fi and make cheap calls back home on an evening, but maybe not at this rate.

Regards
bb

Worth noting that you are almost certainly better off with the vanilla handset that you have received. The customised handsets from 3 are always a nuisance: they add code to make the phones prefer the 3 network over their 2G roaming partners, which in my experience causes problems. Additionally, the custom s/w means that updates are often not forthcoming. I had a Three Nokia e65, which had some appalling bugs that got fixed after several months on the standard versions of the phone. There was not a single update for the 3 version during the phone's working life. In fact I don't think it was ever updated.

I actually checked that I would be getting an unbranded Desire before purchase and if mine is branded when it arrives, it will be going back.

I have just got my Desire about a week ago from Three UK, fortunately it seems to be a non three branded firmware. I can get onto planet three via my browser by I cant see the skype app for download on there. I called customer services and they were no use whatsoover. Is there definately a three uk version of skype that I can use on my handset ??

Fring was easy to set up but I didn't see anything about charges. Can I call people on skype totally free with it or does it eat into my Skype credit?

Ahhh!! Always good to read the website first - looks like it is totally free unless you go over you monthly quota!!.

Having an unbranded phone is probably better than having a branded phone with Skype. Fring is good enough, and it will mean you can install updates instantly.

I have an unbranded, phone purcahsed outright, not locked to any telco.

Can I use the Verizon or 3 version on my phone, or do these require the phone to actually use their particular telcos? (ie: 3 - Skype on 3; Verizon - Skype Verizon)

sckc23- i tried that link you sent, that was just what i was after thanks ...

i have installed it but it wont allow me to log in, looks like it doesnt want to work on the Desire I guess, has anyone else managed to get it working ?

I know I can use Fring etc but thats not the same, on three it uses a free phone call and I get free skype to skype calls, if i use fring or something it will cane my 3g connection and im on that 500mb "unlimited internet" so it would eat too much data.

This version is just for three mate, otherwise you could just use fring or something. The three version does it though a phone call rather than data and is completely free for three customers, thats why i needed it rather than the normal data or wifi using versions.

i tried that, for when i need to use wifi rather than the skype app with calling. I did find that Nimbuzz kept losing connection to certain networks which was quite annoying.

it worked fine for me for a while as well.... after a while i logged back into nimbuzz and it had "x" against some of the networks and i had to keep reconnecting them so it was a bit annoying as unstable. Quite annoying as I quite like the app otherwise

Fring no longer gives access to Skype (im a not a 3 customer) . Fring emailed me a week or so back to say they had been told to stop allowing access to Skype .
I wish Skype would hurry along with their official app.

I find the 3UK version pretty useless. I have it on the Desire. You have to switch off WiFi before it will work, and even then it's lacking some quite obvious features - for example if you have a SkypeIn number the phone doesn't ring for SkypeIn calls (it's as if you're not even logged into Skype). I've actually uninstalled it now. I would reinstall it if I was desperate for monthly minutes to landlines but at the moment I'm more desperate to get back a megabyte of precious application memory.

By the way, you can only download the app via the 3 Network, not through wifi.

Are they developing one - I AM on 3, and just bought an Android phone intending to use skype whilst abroad (so not on the 3 network but over wifi) and Skype/Fring etc seem to have gone from the Android Market Now.

Any ideas of alternatives??

Well I've found a (partial) solution. Nimbuzz works fine and you can download it from the Android Market for free. I'm using an htc Hero and it works fine. There are some reports of it being unstable, but I think that might refer to earlier versions, and it seems fine for me.

The only "problem" is that they haven't yet developed a NimbuzzOut application for android, so you can't add credit and dial landlines/mobiles. If all you need is to do is call people who are running skyp, give Nibuzz a try (it also interfaces with any client so you can call & chat with people using Skype, Facebook etc

UPDATE - Nimbuzz have today released version 2 which adds a dialler !!

The new version packs pretty amazing features, like:
  • NimbuzzOut calling – cheap international calling to mobile phones and landlines
  • A new dialer tab – so you can call mobile phones and landlines via NimbuzzOut, SkypeOut or any of our SIP partners (Google/Gizmo5, Sipgate, Xeloq, T-Pad, VoIPax, Gulfsip, IPS, Badatel and more)
  • Friend suggestions – see which of your phonebook contacts are already using Nimbuzz
  • Facebook Connect – no more disconnecting errors!
Skype can kiss my shiny green ass!

Just downloading Nimbuzz now thanks for the advice - this lack of Skype app thing has been annoying me for some time now. I used Fring a little until they blocked it but what it didn't do (and niether did the Skype app on my old Nokia N96) is let people call you via Skype to your phone... can anyone tell me if this is now the case?

Thanks!

You're right. I should have been more specific.

I've tried Nimbuzz a few times now, especially when Skype and fring had their little tiff. I found it to be so bad as to be near useless. It doesn't seem to register when people come on and offline (and therefore I can't tell who is available to call). It doesn't appear to register me with anyone else. If I click on them then I can just about call but the lag is atrocious (even in Wifi). All in all I found it to be unusable. One of the most disappointing pieces of software on android in fact.

True I haven't tried it for a few weeks now but after trying to struggle with it for quite a while I really can't be bothered with it. If someone has difference experiences then there may be hope yet.

Shame as there is a real gap in the market with Skype.

Is it true that Nimbuzz Out will not work on HTC Desire 2.1?

I got rid of nimbuzz as I found it very unstable and seemed to cause many issues on my phone, shame as I wanted one that worked with wifi.

hope they release a dedicated skype app soon.

Skype2go works well on a Desire - as well as any other phone. Of course, you don't have the free calls and MSN style functionality but it's ifne if you just want to be able to make International calls using SKype rates - from your mobile.

Great forum and thread, so glad i found it before i purchased the Desire. I'm hopeless wth gadgets, but I needed a new phone with gps, wifi and skype for trips away and calling home.
Has anyone any tips as to where the best deals can be had to purchase out right in the UK?

TIA

I had the same issue with the 3 download for skype, eventually found out that you need to go onto the MOBILE 3 site, not the normal three site i.e. Three - Welcome to Three where it will have a link to download skype, hope this helps

Well I'd LOVE to be proved wrong, but I think that Skype isn't going to run on any Android device in the UK unless you are on 3 as they have bought exclusivity in the UK and use it as part of their marketing strategy to attract users. The same applies to the US except that there it is Verizon.

I'm actually on 3, but it doesn't help because the 3 version of Skype is nobbled to turn off your WiFi and use the 3 network for skype calls. That's OK if you only want to skype from within the UK, but I want skype to make cheap calls when I'm abroad using a hotel WiFi connection.

Complaining on this forum will never change anything. Leave a polite message for Skype at their feedback page.

Personally I think this shows that Skype have an utter disregard of their customers and whether they fix it or not, the moment a viable VOIP and video conferencing utility pops up I'm off. If google has any sense they would be looking to develop Voice in this direction.

They already have (sort of) - the problem is the charging model used by UK mobile phone opperators. In the US Google Voice has much more functionality because they have to pay to receive calls, so there is an opportunity to revenue share with the network provider - not here alas!

After downloading, installing and attempting to setup my Skype account on Nimbuzz I gave up as it wouldn't connect, it also really slowed down my phone so I guess it was eating memory in the background or something - HTC Desire running 2.1 (waiting for T-Mobile to get their asses into gear!!!)

Can't recommend Nimbuzz but I wouldn't rule it out for a few more updates.

It certainly does slow down your phone (and drain the battery), but you can always jusdt unload it after use. Not sure what you mean about setting up Skype on Nimbuzz - I use a new (Nimbuzz) account to make calls, but I can call to people who are on Skype OK. I didn't have to set anything up, Nimbuzz just pulls in the Skype details from my contacts list (htc Hero running 2.1) - Mine is unlocked & unbranded, so it's possible that T-Mobile have modified something in their ROM
