Default Weather App


I have had a HTC desire for the last 6 months, I have just received my bill this month for over 200 dollars, normally 15. I think I have worked out what the charges are for, the HTC weather app is updating every 2 hours and using data. My wifi has been down for the last month, so I am assuming that previously the updates have been happening through wifi. The settings on the phone are exactly the same as the day I got it, so my question is should I be expected to pay this bill since I was sold a phone with this app set to update, It would be different if I had downloaded and app that updated regularly, but this came as standard on the phone set up to automatically update and would have been doing this for the last 6 months but for the fact that I had wifi, just wondering what my rights are regarding the bill as surely 1\ I should have been told this would happen or given an option to opt out of it.

I think the solution to your problem lies in dialogue with your carrier.

However there are a number of apps available that will monitor data usage & might prevent this happening again. You can set the day of the month your bill is due & set alerts when calls sms or data reaches a given threshold. Try something like Call Meter NG.

I think 3G Watchdog can also disable cellular data when a pre-set quota is exceeded.

Like Nicka, I think you'll have to talk to your carrier about the bill. Since your currency unit is the dollar I won't have any experience with your particular carrier - it might be worth asking you the forum for our carrier whether anyone has any experience of refunds in similar circumstances.

+1 for 3G Watchdog.

I would be extremely surprised if the Weather app was using very much data. How much have you used ? I'd have thought the Weather app would use less than a couple of hundred KB per day. If that's costing you $200 then I suggest moving carrier (or changing phone). It's possible to make a Desire use little or no data but there's no real point - it's supposed to consume data.

I agree with all the above statements and suggestions. I would seriously consider a data consumption app. I'm betting you have something besides your weather app running up your bill.

Definitely take it up with the carrier, however in the meantime you should turn off sync in the weather app.

How did you work out what was using the data? How confident are you that the problem is the Weather app?

I had particular issues with the HTC e-mail app and Google maps sucking up lots of data from time to time on my old Desire.

Personally, I would turn off sync from the Power Widget then go through any apps that sync - facebook, news, e-mail etc - and at least check the settings.

If you're not 100% sure where the problem lies, a good idea would be to turn syncing off on everything, then gradually add things back until you see a spike in data usage.
