Default Just received the Desire

The quick start guide says 3 hours to charge, where as here

HTC Desire - When I first receive my phone, do I need to charge the battery?

it states 8 hours. Which should I follow? Also, can I have it switched on while I charge so I can set it up? And I imagine I should let it fully discharge before charging it again, but how many times is this appropriate for? The first 2 or 3 or more times?

Thanks.

Charge 3-5 Hours if on for setup. But play as little as possible. Do your facebook/twitter/flicker/Google account setup, then best leave it alone to charge further. No more than 5 hours required. Also best put it on charge when the 14% alarm goes off. then just charge it until full. I followed this rule and 4 weeks down the line, I get 40-45 between charges. Enjoy

Charge it until the light goes Green. It stops charging once the battery is full so I can't see why keeping it plugged in would make any difference whatsoever.
