Default Cutomising Notification Bar / answer button

Hi everyone, first Android phone, pretty pleased with it after mucking around with Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, HTC Advantage iPhone blah blah.

Living in Gibraltar, we are within close proximity to various Mobile Networks - Gibtel (local), Movistar, Vodafone ES etc. in Spain, and we are allowed to roam onto them from Gib. All my other phones have had the carrier sign at the top, the only way I can do this on the desire is to slide the notification section down, revealing the carrier, or when it locks and I have to slde to unlock it. Is there a way to put the carrier name in the top notification bar? There appears to be loads of space.....

Also - is there any way to permanently make the desire pop the "answer" "reject" buttons up rather than the slide when a call comes in? My Business partner has an N900 and the slide to answer/reject can lose you calls if it is in your pocket and you slde it out the wrong way!

Thanks!
