Had the issue briefly yesterday when phone went between data and WiFi...it lasted about five seconds and fixed itself. No airplane mode or restart required. So I guess, for now, new SIM has fixed problem.

Got the PUK lock today...went straight to Verizon store and acted like I was pretty frustrated and all they did was give me a new SIM again.......this is ridiculous. I should have returned this phone.

Mine have the error today for the first time in mums a month. I turned the phone on and stuck it in my pocket; when I checked it several minutes later, it said SIM error. Cycling airplane mode fixed it, eventually.

Turning off global roaming did NOT fix my problem. I'm now on my third SIM card. Hopefully this fixes it.
In contrast my wife's DNA does not have this problem

Default Possible SIM card error message fix

I removed my SIM card and wiped the contacts of the card down with rubbing alcohol (which is great for cleaning electronics), reinstalled the card and haven't had any problems with the error message since.

Question

Just an update to the sim card issue. I'm continuing to have this issue multiple times weekly, it actually happened during a phone call the other day and cut me off. This of course is on my second DNA after exchanging my first for other issues, see this thread Call Quality Beyond that I'm still having the issue with the mic and other software bugs, worse battery life after the OTA update and an issue where I lost just my data connection the other day (had to reboot to fix). This phone truly has me at my wits end and I'm considering selling it out right and getting something else. My question to all of you is what is a fair price for this phone if I were sell it. I'm very disappointed after putting all my faith in HTC and this handset considering how great my last HTC device was (OG Incredible). As far as getting a different device on Verizon I wouldn't know what to get, I don't think they are currently carrying a device that is as good as this device on paper and don't feel I can go back to a dual core phone or less than a 1080p display. Anything new on the horizon from big red? sgs4? DNA+? Thanks in advance...

I posted a few weeks back about airplane mode....its true just a workaround for 'now' .....I had 50+ sim errors in 2-3 days and said F***k it im gonna pull the sim w a paper clip....

No cleaning, blew on it for good luck(if your old you remember blowing on old Nintendo game cartridges to fix the frozen game) and reinstalled....

Not a problem at all past 2-3 days. Dealing w microvoltage and authentication.

Id say 10-15% of swapped eqpt at verizon actually addresses the issues on any equipt. Its the final straw for 'we dont know' or we dont know how to fix it or for alot of reps - its a practice they are used to doing to make customer calm down (most of em feel good getting their 'bad phone' swapped lol) ...the rep knows it aint gonna fix it...they just do it to put on a show and MOVE on to a legit customer. I suggest all noobs reading this thread pop your sim and reinstall instead of blaming eqpt/reps and companies for the bad experience.

Well the only reason I had thought about trying to get the swap was to get a phone without OTA...but I don't want a refurb at this point...my phone has been great since I got the original SIM out. Minus one PUK lock...

Had this happening to me for a couple months now. finally got off my lazy butt and came to the forum. Went to VZW two weeks ago for the sim card switch. it's been perfect ever since. I hope I'm not just lucky and it stays good. My phone is for work and when I would realize I had no service it would kill me. Thousand voicemails and missed calls. So I'm hoping the sim swap has done it for me. But reading some of your posts it looks like I might be on borrowed time.

Looks like my number just got punched. I've had my phone since December and have had only a few SIM issues.

Today? 5 so far, in just 9 hours of use. This is ridiculous.

Making this thread a sticky....

I had 3 or 4 days where it started doing this again. I reseated the sim and haven't had an issue in past few weeks.

This issue is annoying as all hell. Especially when you realize your phone hasn't gone off in hours and you pull it out and see 'no sim'

Maybe it's just me but I'm finding this phone almost too buggy to be something I could ever recommend. There's the SIM issue, then mine also randomly turns off the wifi and 4G if the phone's been dormant for a while or the battery is low. And I can't stream audio/radio with the screen off. It stops playing until I turn the screen on again (the app will say the connection was lost or "buffering" which tells me the phone is throttling data in standby mode) so if I want to listen long-term to some online music, I gotta plug the phone up or keep tapping the screen to keep it from timing out. Then there's the fact it won't stay connected to my 5 GHz wifi network at home… Lots of little issues add up here. I bet it spends 50% of its standby time 'off network' due to all the connectivity issues.

You need to be getting that thing replaced! I've only had the Sim issue. And I do all the other things you have mentioned without any issues whatsoever....

I agree with this, that isn't normal I would at least call VZW CS.

According to what I've seen online, all of these issues are not uncommon with HTC phones. I can overlook the 5 GHz issue easily enough so it's not a big deal. But if you search around there are others with similar problems.

The data during standby thing also (supposedly) affects multiple HTC models. If you're not having issues, you're not trying to use enough data while the phone screen is off. Try a high bitrate stream, or try using the phone as a file server (I use Solid Explorer's FTP feature.) There's some people talking about it for this and some other HTC models, saying even a custom ROM doesn't fix it.

If you wanna check it out, try finding a stream on TuneIn that's at least 160 kbps or better. Preferably even 320. These should stream on 4G easily and on most people's home wifi. And if it does while the screen's on, turn off the display and wait at least 1 minute. I bet yours will quit and buffer, too.

If you want to use the same station I just checked right now, go to By Location > North America > United States > Alabama > Birmingham > "100.1 | Fox-FM" as they have multiple streams from 32 kbps all the way up to 128 kbps in AAC and mp3. The 128 one won't play but the 64 kbps AAC one will.

With Solid Explorer, when transferring large files I get around 6.0 MB/s transfer rate according to the FTP program on my PC. As soon as the screen times out, it drops to about 0.1 MB/s. This is over a local LAN wifi.

Here's the kicker: before I bought the phone, I played with the DNA at a corporate store and streamed via the TuneIn app, which is of course included stock on the phone. The screen timeout was set to something like 30 seconds or 1 minute, and it quit when the screen went off while I was letting it play. I figured at the time it was just a poor LTE signal but now I know it's the phone! So that's at least two of these I know for sure do this.

The way around it is to pick a lower bitrate stream - 32 kbps AAC or setting Google Music to not use high quality for streams. That seems to solve the issue. I doubt most people would even notice since most streams for cellular are so bit-starved to begin with. But high quality stuff, like Google Music set to HQ, will make this problem show up. Try it!

I suppose I could complain to VZW but it's well past the 14 day trial period, so I dunno what I could get that wouldn't cost me more money. These issues are annoying but they're not deadbreakers. The SIM issue is the major issue, and it's supposedly being fixed. So if they knock that one off the list, I think I can live with it "as is" otherwise.

Just got my first sim card error since the update. Now a dialog box pops up to let you know that the phone is not detecting a sim card. Toggling mobile data off and on fixed it. Thanks for the fix Verizon, it's working great (sarcasm).

I've had no more SIM errors (crosses fingers) since the update, but I've also figured out why my wifi and 4g are cutting off, too. After noting the times it happens, I've discovered that a) it only happens after midnight and b) more quickly happens if the phone is face down.

Turns out, Sense 4 has something called "HTC SmartSync" which disables your data connections, but only between the hours of midnight and 7am. It also disables them quicker if the phone is face down. If it's on charge, this doesn't happen.

I know, right? And worst of all, it cannot be disabled in settings. It's allegedly-supposedly-reportedly being taken out of Sense 5 so if we ever get that update, my problems will disappear.

I had no idea when I got the phone that it didn't like being a night owl like me.

I still had simcard error & worse a puk lock even after the update. However, I came across another forum and found a solution. Clean the simcard's contacts either with canned air to blow out any debris or use alcohol and put Scotch tape on back of SIM. This would tighten the fit of the simcard in it's slot and thus improved the phone's sim contacts. This removed the puk lock I had without having to get another simcard and signal is working great again.

When I was getting my new phone, I was talking to the CSR about the issue, and she said it's a common issue, and has to do with the way the phone was designed in combination with some variation in the sim cards themselves. That stores fix is to keep swapping sim cards, until they find a card that plays nice with the particular phone. I will say I haven't gotten one with the new phone yet.

Must be something in the air(waves) because mine did it twice today, too, after a long stretch of working fine. It first quit when I got momentarily lost on a walking trail and tried to call up a map. It literally quit while I was using the map app, looking right at it! The second was right after I muted the ringer while someone was calling. The call went to voicemail and the SIM quit right them.

Very disappointing and very sad. This is my second SIM card. How many do we have to go through before Verizon acknowledges this is a real physical defect and replaces out handsets?

Csr offered me a warranty replacement today. I called about something else and asked about no sim/puk locked message. She said the last Ota was supposed to address this and if I keep having issues she could get me a warranty replacement. Food for thought

A replacement that's a different, working model or a used and refurbished DNA?

I'm not sure I would want to go back to this phone if it gets to the point it needs replacing. At the same time, I can't imagine Verizon would be willing to give me an equivalent (if one even exists yet). The S4 or a HTC One are probably equals in many ways, but I doubt I could make a switch like that without incurring extra costs.

Do what I did. Clean the simcard's contacts either with canned air to blow out any debris or use alcohol and put Scotch tape on back of SIM. This would tighten the fit of the simcard in it's slot and thus improve the phone's sim contacts. It brought my phone back full-time signal with no problem.

I'm hesitant to try that because the SIM card goes in so tightly on mine that the contacts are actually being scratched/etched by the connectors inside the slot.

My simcard already had scratches and it didn't work before I tried this method. I was ready to get another simcard which would've been my 3rd one.
I'm glad the method saved me the trouble.

After three more errors in the last 24 hours, I'm willing to try it. I found some off-brand transparent tape that may be a little thinner than Scotch™ tape.

After putting a bit of it on the back of the SIM, I had trouble getting it back into the slot. Just that infinitesimal extra thickness made it very difficult. Some of the tape may have peeled off inside the slot, too.

Something I never noticed before stood out while trying to get the SIM back in the slot. It appears my SIM is too short and has "up and down" wiggle room while sitting in the carrier. With the extra thickness of the tape, it kept pushing the SIM out of the carrier when I was initially putting it back together. Once I got it seated for the second time, I noticed that when inserting the carrier into the phone, the SIM was able to still rise up a tiny amount while still seated in the carrier. I'm wondering if that bit of vertical movement in the carrier itself is enough to cause the SIM to lose contact with the phone? I used half of a tweezers to encourage the SIM to stay in place while I slid it into the phone and I'll see if that makes any difference.

Hoped it work for you. For me, after cleaning the contacts with alcohol & putting a small tape on the back, it firmly slid into the slot with a slight hardness but nothing bad.

I'm still on my first phone and card. The SIM errors have been getting more and more frequent lately. Also, I've recently started getting a message on my lock screen occasionally that my SIM has a PUK lock or something like that and to call customer service. That error always clears itself up in a few seconds once I unlock the phone.

Maybe they should just send everyone a piece of Scotch™ tape. That worked for me, thanks to the recommendations on this thread!

Edit to add: no update waiting for me, bummer.

i just got my first replacement tonight since i got the phone the day it launched. it randomly happened every few weeks maybe even every few months since i got the phone but in the past 2-3 weeks it was happening a few times a DAY. i actually just dropped my first phone call because of it today!

a friend of mine with the same phone lost phone calls, had the error daily.

so ill play along with verizon, take the replacement and see if it works. if not, i will be speaking to higher ups with verizon until i get what i want, A PHONE THAT WORKS!!!!!!!!!

I hadn't had an error in a couple months, then got one yesterday, then two in quick succession this morning.

But took the sim card out, cleaned the contacts, popped it back in and good to go again, at least for a little while.

Tape trick worked here as well...the first SIM card fix update actually made mine worse.

Just do yourself a favor and put two small pieces of scotch tape on back of SIM card before you put it back in...ever since I've done it my phone has been SIM error free!

I got my second replacement phone a couple is ago. My first phone worked wonderfully for the first couple months but slowly I got more and more SIM card errors. When they started happening multiple times per day I went into Verizon and complained. So they sent me my second phone which from day one never seemed quite right. After a month or so it would lose connection with the network but display no error message aside from "no network connection." This time Verizon insisted on swapping my SIM card first. That helped for a couple of days then things went down hill fast. So they sent me a third phone. If this one needs replacing I'm going up the ladder until I find someone who can give me a different phone.

I just started getting the sim card error intermittently. Can you describe how to put the tape on the sim card? Is the idea to make it thicker so it makes firmer contact? Thanks!

Yes, the idea is to bulk up the SIM card. I'm not exactly a precise person so when I did it just cut a little sliver of Scotch tape that more or less lined up with the size of the card. I reckon as long as it doesn't wrap around and cover the metal contacts, you should be OK.

Since I did it, I have had zero SIM error notifications.

HTC has broken the boundaries again with the DROID DNA. This 5-inch behemoth comes to compete directly with the Galaxy Note 2, but what gives it the edge over the popular Samsung device? Well, this guy has a full HD 1080p display. Mix that with a p... Read More
