Yeah, but it helps pass the time while you wait.

Can't download any new games, since they may be wiped by the update, so we gotta do something....

That is about it.

However there is an outside, long shot chance that the checkin service will acquire the OTA at some point down the line.

Looooonnnnnngggg shot.

Well, as I understand it from past readings, the phone only checks so many times for an update. You may be queued up for the OTA but your phone hasn't checked in. May get you the update a few hours early. Then again, OTA may be a total different deal. I don't know.

If you happen to do it when VZW adds your phone to their "list"...

Hehehe...Update....for Dolphin Browser!
The new home page for Dolphin shows "Today's App" and spotlights new apps I have never heard of...like Drunk Blocker. When activated it blocks the numbers you program from accidently calling during times of inebriation!

Sorry if this has been posted before. I've not seen it.
How come you guys took off the questions i had asked about the originality of this thread? My reasoning behind starting this was for information on something and now its exploded into something else... i totally did not expect that when i started it lol

When you began the thread, did you notice a popup text field just above your input area showing all threads with checkin in the title?

I really could care less about the OTA cause Verizon in arizona slack alot and seems they dont care about any OTA's for customers.. However, I may be dead wrong and my statement is based merely on opinion (mine) so feel free to correct me...
I am really hoping for the .zip to be pulled so i can do it manually
I feel more nerdy when i have a reason to throw my eris into bootloader and DO IT MYSELF!!!! haha

No no, amigo.

When you start a thread here at the forums; one of the features, while you're doing that, just after inputting your title, is a popup text field showing you similar threads in existence.

The idea is to attempt to cut down on duplicate, redundant threads in here.

In your dialer press *#*#CHECKIN#*#*
Do not press send, it will automatically do its thing and give you a message that checkin was successful.
This will get app updates if they are available, but doesnt seem to grab the OTA although one person yesterday said it did for him.
Also Menu>Settings?About Phone>System Updates
This is where your system updates will be waiting for you if you have one waiting to be installed.

i was playing with my buddys hero the other day by sprint and his had an option to check for sys updates and you push it and it says checking for updates, the eris only has an option to see if any updates avail not actually check but i think the checkin service may do what his hero does...i thought that was a cool feature to be able to push check for system updates and it actually checks it right there for you... i wish eris had that!!

Yesterday i went to the verizon store to change my number and as I walked in the door 3 of my apps popped up with updates.

Are they runing some type of router to locate phones in the store and run this command. I found it very interesting.

you know what does stink? there is a user on xdz forum who has the update ready on his phone...he hasn't accepted it....and won't go through the process of getting the download URL for others.

That's selfish. :P

Unless he doesnt want to accept it. Then it would be selfish of anyone to expect him to.

lol! I think a lot of those folks must have visited XDA first!

I keep seeing posts start out with "Don't flame me!..."

I think for the most part, we're pretty tame here...yeah, I wish folks would search more, but the AF search could be a little better (I use Google search with "site:androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris xxxxx" a lot instead of the regular forum search--it sometimes return results better).

Yes, none of the information in this thread really applies anymore. Unless your still on 1.5 god forbid.

First thing that comes up is your post. I didn't originally coin the phrase though. I've seen it used before on other forums. But apparently I'm one of few that use it on this forum.

Mine won't do. I type in the keypad as in dialing a number and do NOT hit the call button. I sit here and nothing happens. Does it matter if it's VM or Sprint?

Welcome to the furum WorryFox.

I believe it does matter, I think...Are you using the Eris on a carrier other than Verizon?

Does this still work somehow? Trying it for Jellybean on my Nexus, it says checkin succeeded but still says I am up to date!

Necro-post....again lol.

Anyhow, I don't believe it does. Like I mentioned earlier (like years ago) this thread is pretty old and doesn't really have up to date information, since it was intended for us Eris users still on Android 1.5 back in early 2010.

It boils down to, you get the update when you get it. Or maybe you can look on the Nexus forums, and maybe you might be able to get the OTA update ZIP file from a thread. Odds are, look in the root forum (although rooting shouldn't be required, they usually have lots of those files for archival purposes).
