Custom Roms?
Are there any compatible Custom Roms for the eris and do you believe that a CDMA Hero Rom (Such as fresh 1.1) will work on our Eris?

Yes, but why is a root needed for a ROM? Can't a custom ROM be loaded via a flash?

you have to have root access to the kernal in order to flash it... without root access, none of the core files can be changed.

Yes. Check the "All Things Root" sub-forum. I don't think Hero ROMs are directly compatible with the Eris, but a few have been ported (e.g. Aloysius).

The Eris has been rooted. Look at the top of the main Eris forum page in the "All things root" section.

Go to xda, lots of ROMs in the Eris Development section. As false_apology mentioned Aloysius has been ported and Fresh Rom 2.0d was recently ported as well.
