Default colllege email users!! help or UB miracle

Okay, so I'm a student at the University at Buffalo, and I'm looking to set up my schools email address on my Eris. Unfortunately, I cannot get it to work. Now I don't suppose anyone on here is a UB student but if there are any of you out there please help! But, if any other students on here have encountered a problem such as this and know how to fix it that would be greatly appreciated. Now, UB's mail is actually powered by gmail and google but the actual address is @buffalo.edu

if anyone has any idea what I should put in specially or differently into the setup that would be a great help, I'm sick of having to go through the browseer to check my emails, I wanna get them rigth to my phone because at the moment my schoool email is way more important than any other one I have. thanks!

I could do that but I like having separate accounts, one that is all serious school business and where I get crucial info about classes, lab, etc. and then my gmail account which is basically everything that isn't school related ha. I just don't want to give up the separation.

I asked the very same question a while back, I was told that since it's a Google domain it should work but I haven't tried it as I don't have an Android phone yet. Here's my original thread:

Would my school email work with the Android Gmail client?

alright I am a UB Student and I have set up my UB email account on Droid Eris using Mail.. when you open new account,
Incoming settings:
Protocol: IMAP
Email Address: Whatever your UB address is .edu
Username: your UB Id without .edu
IMAP server: imap.buffalo.edu
secuirty type: none
server port: 143

Now your outgoing server setting:
make sure Login required is checked on the top
username: UB id without .edu
password:
SMTP server: smtp.buffalo.edu
security type: TLS
server port: 25

Thats it... YOU ARE DONE!!!

Hey, another UB student here saying thanks (The UBIT guy I talked to on south campus said you could not use the buffalo outgoing smtp server from off campus, had to use a vzw smtp server which sounded fishy to me.

Thanks again

Ooousing the incoming and outgoing server as xxxx.gmail.com and the mail app( not gmail) I can recieve emails just fine.

the only problem i have is the app and my school account will not sync; and if they do sync it takes up to a week sometimes.

Ill try to change the xxxx.gmail.com to xxxx.odu.com and post results

**update** it didn't work

anyone have suggestions

My suggestion would be to go to your school's IT department's web page and look for the specific settings. My school had a specific link with the settings posted to help students get their email to go to Outlook (other programs as well) and mobile devices that will support it. I just entered in the settings they gave me and it worked!

@HunterJohnson... Does your school really have a .com extension (wouldn't it be .edu)

@MongolStomp... if you haven't already got your email set up I have a suggestion for you to try. Your error message is for your username/password so I am thinking it could be your username... When first setting up your email you are asked for your "email" address and password... you then press next to move on. At the next screen or point in the setup it will be asking for your username (this is where your error might be). See the mail application puts your email address in as your username by default... Vish4989 said to make sure .edu wasn't in your username, but I would suggest to take off @xxxx (your college) as well (if you haven't already done that). The settings need to be EXACT!

Another point I thought I would bring up to help if there are further problems... My email address just uses .edu ,which I see yours does as well. But for my IMAP and SMTP settings my school told me to have .nodak in between my school and .edu (EX: xxxx.nodak.edu)

@the others wondering about their schools... it should probably work for your schools, just check your IT dept. for actual settings. Look at Vish4989's ouptput for his mail settings at the UB, it should give you a great start.

I hope this helps all of you that are wondering. I know now that I have my school's email up and running I am a lot happier with my 3ris

I'm not trying to be mean or anything here but couldn't you just head on over to your computer/ITS Help Desk on campus? I work at the one at my university (North Dakota State) and while we cannot set up our email on users phones, we can give them all of the necessary information that they would need to do it themselves. Just a suggestion

Wow, old thread!

If you're still interested, go to the accounts and sync menu and add a google account with your school email. If it's powered by gmail it should work. It works for me.

I also use Gmail unread count widget. One for each of my gmail accounts.

Bumping this thread if the OP is still interested.

I'm a student at UB for 3 years ++ and I used to work for the IT department as a student helper.

Old accounts uses UB mail servers
Newer accounts (2010 I believe) & alumni accounts uses Google App mail servers.

I had the old account but I have migrated to the newer Google App mail account.

If you have the old account, you can use the imap.buffalo.edu & smtp.buffalo.edu servers.

With the Google app account, you cant use the imap access directly due to shibboleth authentication. (Meaning, your password is authenticated by UB's website before you are forwarded to Google apps)

What I did was, create another Gmail account solely for my UBMail(gmail). I forward all the mails from UBMail(gmail)to a new Gmail account.

Incoming mail server -> imap.gmail.com
Outgoing mail server -> smtp.buffalo.edu

I use this setup for my computer's Mail clients as well.

It is possible that UB has added support for imap access for UBMail(Google).
