Interesting remark from a rather intelligent kid my daughter hangs around with. He knows little of the Android niche of smart phones, but is into Blackberries. I told him about the leak and all he said was, "some people just like to pretend like they are ahead of other people, but they're really just pretending."
I agree with you 100% I put it on there purely because I wanted to play with it and currently have that luxury. I understand that not all have a spare phone laying around or perhaps it wasn't their "geek time of the month" like it was mine.
The only folks I was mf'in were the doom and gloomers....wishing bad things on folks and making hair brained excuses why their upgrade path is "better". all you have to do is tell me "i'm happy with my phone right now" and thats the end of discussion, no name calling no anything. Whats good for you is different than me, nothing more nothing less...I'm having a blast with the phone so that makes it worth it to me!

Damn.
If you spent $80 at happy hour, you either drink WAY too much, or that place doesn't have very good happy hour deals.
Probably both, I guess.
Cheers!
Haha, no I paid for everyone and yes I did drink too much. So I was playing with my new 2.1 and didn't realize that I paid the whole bill until everyone was gone. They'll pay for this outrage.
Um, yeah, but gotta remember some peope **coughmecough** are jobless and lucky to have this phone and don't have a spare $80 they can toss down for a new phone if it gets bricked. I am on 2.1 though...
Don't sweat it, nothing will happen. This thing is rock solid and probably the official release.

Now that I'm married and poor, I need to party with you!!! Your bill would be slightly higher than 80 bucks though

Very perceptive from a kid. Tell him Bobby said, "some people just like to pretend they are cautious and reasonable, but they're really just pretending."

Remember this isn't at&t lol
anyway, if anything they'll put the download on the site where you can get MR2
PCD. I don't think they'd make people go back to the store.
Also remember they don't push to everyone at once, It is pushed to different network locations geographically across the US. And I have a feeling that VZW has thought of this and have been taking precautions, such as asking AT&T what they did with the iphone and doing the opposite
Actually AT&T did it right, the iphone uses itunes to download and install your update via your Mac or PC and even backs up your phone. Were left with using OTA with horrifically slow data rates, I'm just glad I use wifi almost 95% of the time.

ok did you just come in to talk about the awesomeness of the iphone?
I'm sure there are plenty of forums with folks who share your opinion....you may want to check them out! Horrifically slow data? wtf whatever.
Once again that is all it is.......smack. You have to remember that all the bad things you keep trying to say would apply to all HTC and Verizon testers too. They aren't going to leave their people out in the cold. Quit trying to scare people.
Um, I must have missed it, but did you say something intelligent?
Been reading all the 2.1 threads since getting my phone three weeks ago. Downloaded the leaked update but haven't done anything with it yet. There's just to many people saying how they love 2.1 and it works great except for this app and that app not working right. Well that just means that the leaked isn't right. I'm enjoying 1.5 waiting on the OTA or an official download from VZ.

Why afraid of bricking?

Why is everyone afraid of "bricking" their phone with the 2.1 flash update? Has anyone actually resulted with a brick? Are you also scared of driving your car because you can crash it and kill yourself? Did you know if you slam your transmission into Reverse while driving forward it will wreck the car as well? My point? Things are simple if you follow the instructions provided...if you don't follow the instructions THEN you can expect bad things to happen.
Personally, I jumped in and got the 2.1 update. I'm loving Google Nav as now I can get GPS directions voice-over while driving. Now I'm not risking my life glancing at a weak Google Maps app. So 2.1 has actually MADE MY LIFE SAFER. Thanks Devs!
I know OTD will love this one...I am also no longer using a Task Killer! Not sure if it was the fresh-wipe of Apps and selectively re-installing, or 2.1, or what, but I never use a Task Killer anymore and this thing FLIES!
Rarely in life is impatience rewarded. This time it is.

I don't understand this comment. Why is this site split into two groups: one group who updated and loved it, another who seems to be snooty and "too good" to get the update and is actually hoping negative things result? If you're that jealous go download the new ROM and flash it, otherwise be quiet.
For me the decision is simple, I needed Google Nav and VPN support. Now I have it. If you are so satisfied with 1.5, then you have no reason to use the leak or OTA! Problem solved! Nobody is forcing you to upgrade for faster performance/new features. Chances are you'll be the troll telling everyone the OTA has problems when Verizon releases it officially.

I think part of it is others antagonizing people who don't feel the need to update. (i.e. being called pansies and offering solutions like "just get a new phone if you brick it").
I could care less what others do to their phones. I would root in a second, but have no real need to upgrade unofficially to 2.1.
edit: not to mention that, at one point, 75% of the threads created on page one had something to do with 2.1.

Some people who take chances with their phones are fine with me; there are things to learn and I'll even ask questions about various things.
But when they start acting like it is they who are doing the right thing as opposed to those who are waiting for the official release, they lose credibility and I generally stop reading their posts the next time I see their user name.
Also, there is an immaturity factor which comes across in posts such as "pansies" or whatever. One or two of those might be funny, but it seems to be becoming prevalent here and my ignore list grows.

if you have insurance and brick your phone. Claim it lost get a new one. Problem solve
Not really, at least the way my insurance works is you pay a $50 deductible. Ok, to some that may not seem like much money, but to a lot of folks it is. It played a large factor in my deliberations over whether to install the leak or not. What finally won me over was the fact that I flashed my Omnia 2 or 3 times a week just for the fun of it, and I couldn't see how the process was that much different. Not being able to roll back caused me pause though. In the end it was the fact that my omnia was still functional should I break the Eris that gave me the mental "OK" to do the upgrade. But everyone's situation is different. I very nearly chose prudence over the gee whiz factor of the new toys.
This is not forum for those who installed 2.1...this is a forum for those who are waiting to get the OTA update. I just wanted a place where I could see what others have heard about the OTA update.
With my luck, the OTA is going to come out while I'm staying at my grandma's roaming, with no wireless internet, and I won't be able to get the update!
The new 2.1 Rom is great. There are no bugs as far as I can tell after a few reboots now and using it a few days. It is also a lot faster like the browser, maps, and voice. I don't need a task manager anymore.
I really think the Verizon push will come to us OTA anyway over this Verizon which will let us download more HTC widgets hopefully the news one and friend feed.
So, while waiting for the OTA, I've decided to satisfy my lust by installing some shiny new apps:
- swype beta (It really works! really!)
- VisibleVote (Get permission from someone older & wiser than you before using
What else would be good to while away the hours?

That VisibleVote is an interesting app. Funny how our representatives tend to not listen to the majority.

So I guess your March 5th date of expected OTA is out the window ... maybe tomorrow we will wake up to a nice surprise??? Starting to get a little anxious here!
Hot off the verizon forums...................................
"Software Upgrade for ERIS wil be 2.0
03-07-2010 01:01 PM I just talked with HTC today and they confirmed that the new upgrade for the ERIS will be the 2.0..... Not the 2.1 as has been hoped for. It will be offered anyday now and can be downloaded off the HTC site or over the air."
"Re: Software Upgrade for ERIS wil be 2.0
03-07-2010 03:02 PM - last edited on 03-07-2010 03:05 PM Ok, I may have opened my mouth just long enough to change feet. I just got off the phone with HTC, and the young lady on the other end ASSURED ME that the Eris release of Android 2.0 would definitely be out by the end of this month. She also said it would subsequently be replaced by 2.1, but couldn't give a timeframe for when that would happen. So, in case you thought the wait was over...think again. Go figure. That 2.1 patch is looking better all the time."
Just passing some info along, but what I've come to realize is...............NEVER take the word of a "Verizon sales rep" or an "HTC customer service rep" about any kind of info regarding an update. Everyone's "insider" that has told them release info has been wrong to this point. Until something official comes out, it's all here say.
If that's true, then it will be a two part roll out. 1.5 to 2.0, then eventually 2.1. Sounds like they have some work to do on the final product.
This brings the next question. If you have version 2.1, will you want a better working 2.0? And will you get the OTA update?
Personally, I downloaded the leaked 2.1 but haven't installed it as of yet. I might wait a few more days to see if this is true and the 2.0 comes out. I've always been the kind of person who over analysis everything, so I've been following everyone's experiences with 2.1 closely. Whether I go with the official update(s) or install the leak, at least I have it if I choose to.
I'd like to wait for the official releases, but the more I see about the fixes for the "bugs" and the youtube videos I see, you never know. I am kinda impatient! LOL
Do you guys really think HTC hasn't figured a way to roll out the OTA update without wiping the device? If so, I have some land in Haiti to sell you.
Verizon, not HTC has the say when it rolls out. Once the testing period has ended you will see the update. Except those of you who updated already to the leaked version of 2.1. So, enjoy.

Did they do it right, or do they have a multibillion dollar foundation to work from?
To be perfectly honest i had no idea who HTC was untill i came here to read on the OS. Chances are HTC will never be Apple,.... just a hunch.
I know, when I quoted that I was hoping it was just going to be the text, not the pic. Sorry about that
Back on point of the thread.....................If 2.0 for Eris is "ready to go" then I assume it has Sense UI. Would it be that hard to adapt it to 2.1? Are they really that different? I know the leaked version has some bugs which i'm sure is what's delaying it, but if 2.0 works I wouldn't think 2.1 would be that much harder to tweak

If an official 2.0 releases it wouldn't be that difficult to get the 2.1 phone to roll back. Just as simple as the first install.
