Took the plunge earlier today. Went very smooth. Much easier than cooking and flashing ROMS on my Winmo phone.
This thread should be stickied.
Awesome! It should be, shouldn't it? lol

Yup. I am not sure how, but there is a way.

Glad to hear. Yeah, you didn't need to delete everything if you didn't want to. I did because there is alot of stuff on it from past apps that were not used any longer.

Thanks everyone!
I need to add that to the tutorial. Sorry about that! Hope everything else went smoothly!

Everything went smoothly! Followed your directions exactly. Thanks for all of your help! The only downside I see is the FB contact sync. I can live with that for now. The phone is much more responsive.
Edit: Facebook contacts are now synced! Followed the directions in the "bugs" thread. I really like being able to shut off the vibration for the 4 menu buttons at the bottom of the screen. They are MUCH more responsive with 2.1.

Still not working for me. I get no status bar! I get the same screen that I talked about in my earlier post
Thanks,
Robert
The only thing on your sd card should be the zipped file. Be sure to not change the name of the file when you download it and save it to your PC's desktop. I had to remove my original download of the 2.1 and do it over b/c I renamed it. Mistake.

And don't extract the ZIP file either. Just download it and put it on the SD card.
And make sure it's not in any sub-directory or folder.

Did you get it working yet? If not, describe exactly what you are doing so we can help you.
I did my Dad's phone and his wife's phone last night. They were so excited to have navigation!! My dad is almost 61 years old and he is like a little kid when he starts playing around with his Eris.

Mine is coming up with the cot 23 2009 date, and asks for
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
I copy pasted the zip file i downloaded from the link in this thread. Did i miss a step somehow? it's on the card, I can see it on USB mode
Help?
Do you have a status bar in the upper right corner? I had "Hboot", "Recovery", and "Fast Boot". Nothing else. The status bar started moving right away.

the loader bar showed up initially and went through. but I have to pick from the Hboot menu, let it sit for 10 min, never went further on its own. can't take a good pic, other phone doesn't focus enough.
tried 3x. gonna try re-OTA and redownload original zip file.

So long as it can find the ZIP file in the root of the card you can leave all the other files on the card.
it shows the fastboot screen real quick before the load bar strats, then after reading and loading brings back to fastboot, recovery clear storage simlock.
just did the update on my eris to unofficial 2.1 and its A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! anyone who wants to do it its very simple here is the link to download the file:
**(its the second link down with the patch)
and here is the link on youtube to walk you through the steps on how to do it just skip the first min and half or so to get started:
Ok, if the kid in that video can do it, I sure as hell can! lol! I think if the OTA doesn't come by this Friday I'm gonna take the plunge. Seems to me that he used the power and send buttons to power up, then the vol down to select Hboot. Thats different than in the tutorial right? And it would be best to backup my sd card and then reformat it before adding the file on there?
If you use Volume Down + End buttons to start it, it's already in HBOOT. you don't need to select it anywhere. Just press the trackball when it prompts you to do your upgrade.

Different people have been using different key combinations when installing the upgrade ... I don't know, but I'd guess that both key sequences probably work.
And the upgrade won't mess with your SD card, at all. (If you've got something really valuable on there It wouldn't hurt to make a backup anyway ... but that's the case regardless. After all, you could lose the phone tomorrow ...)

I already have my sd card backed up, well all but one movie I think. I would just like the update to go as smoothly as possible since I'm not sure what to do if it gets messed up! Wait, I would just come here and ask for help, lol.

Took the words out of my mouth. lol
If you use the Call + End buttons you begin at the very beginning of the Upgrade. Most of us don't know which option to choose if you use this method. So, to make it easier, Volume Down + End of the perferd method to use. Especially if your like me, a nerd, but not a Trekkie (Star Trek nerd = Super Nerd.. wait, I do watch Star Trek.. hmm.... lol)

Well here is your options with the OTA.
1) You Leak your phone and get 2.1
2) Wait for the OTA (shouldn't be too much longer)
3) Leak your phone and not be able to Root 1.5 (unless they figure out Root for Leaked 2.1)
4) Wait for the OTA and Root when 2.1 is rooted
Remember, there is always a possibility of not otaining OTA 2.1 if your phone is Leaked. A SLIM chance, but it's not 100%.
I would assume that we could manually install the "OTA" updated version, though, right?
Didn't you asked this on another thread? lol
I think I answered it on that one too. rofl
Anyway..!
As long as someone is able to gather the downloaded file (and if it's not a zip like the Leak.. Zip it) and release it.
I want to try to do that when the OTA comes around. Once the phone tells me I can upgrade, I am going to try and find the file(s). The only downside is that it may download the file(s) onto the phone itself and not the SD card. In that case, root must be obtained on the device. So I can't do it unless they Root the Leaked 2.1. But, since root is available on 1.5, someone should be able to easily find the file(s) if they are in fact downloaded to the phone then zip them up and probably call on the XDA developers to help us out to make the file installable!
Hi all,
I thought I followed the directions to the letter, but when I do the restart- vol down with both buttons pressed, it asks if I want to clear storage data, but doesn't give the option to upgrade. I called the rest of the process anyway, but after the full restart and ota I still have 1.5... please tell me what I'm doing wrong, I appreciate any help you guys can offer. Thanks

Lets go down a list to see if we can't fix your problem (adding a Trouble Shooting to the Tutorial).
1) Is the file on the lowest level of the SD Card?
2) Is the file named PB00IMG.zip? It cannot have (1) or anything like that on the name.
3) Is the file 103mb? If not, it did not download fully.
I posted on Saturday that I updated my husband's Droid Eris with 2.1 and had no problems. My husband is especially picky about how his phone works and so I have to admit I was concerned.
He has had tiny problems but in all honesty, not sure if it was operator error on his part after he told me what happened. He has had a couple of calls where he couldn't hear the caller or they couldn't hear him. Did a reset on the phone and I haven't heard him complain about it again.
He had no problems with Facebook syncing and while a phone restart does require a re-sign in to his gmail account, that's not been a big deal since he doesn't reboot his phone that often.
He has reported that getting into his contact list doesn't always let him do a "tap and call" from the contact listing. I'll try and check it out myself before I say this is something to put on the "list of things of possible bugs." Anyone else experience this?
Thank you to Matlock for the great instructions....even though I'm not one of his fast-food trainee's, I appreciated the turn-by-turn directions.

It's very nice to hear that the instructions worked well. Hopefully the Google Nav Turn-by-tuen directions work equally well. lol
The contact list problem I have not experianced yet.

Thanks Matlock, I'm not sure if my reply got to you but thanks for the help. It ended up working after i did the restart by only holding down the call and power buttons, then after the option screen loads, i used the Vol-down button to get the hboot , then upgrade question. before i was holding down all 3 buttons at once and the Hboot option wouldn't load.
Another question for you :-)
I'm on 2.1 now (loving it!!!) Verizon voicemail isn't working even after the OTA programing... the error message says "not able to authenticate yourr phone" any ideas on how to correct?
If that hasn't healed, head over to Caddyman's (Eris 2.1 leak Bug's and Fixes) Thread and find out if this has been an issues. its a lot of reading, so be prepared. or try a search for voice mail on his thread.
hope it helps.

So sorry i couldn't respond sooner. Laptop took a fall. Glad i have the Black Tie coverage from Best Buy! the link is finally back up. The site hosting the file was down for a while. But I am glad you found a good copy.
OK, I've been reading this forum since I got my phone at Christmas. I read all the pros and cons and it seems like everyone who had bugs has found that it is less buggy recently (maybe due to app updates?). So I went for it. So far, so good. I haven't tried to make a call yet.
Made thread Sticky, nice post and tutorial Matlock.
Cheers.
Awesome! Thanks for the sticky.

Great! You should go ahead and do everything you'd normally do with your phone. That way, if anything happens you'll know and it wont be that big of a problem later down the road.
The HTC Droid Eris launched for Verizon Wireless on November 6th in part as the carrier's first Android Phone. However it was overshadowed by the other member of the inaugural Verizon Droid duo - the Motorola Droid. The Droid Eris might look fa... Read More
