UPDATE: 06/14/10
I'm back on the forums, FINALLY! I finally got fed-up with dealing with Verizon and their rediculas prices. I had 2 phones on my 700 Family Share plan and it was nearly $160 with NO extra features. Just phone. Not internet, no texts, basic NON3G phone.. Looked into other carrirers and found Sprint... What is that? It's HUGE!... It's the EVO 4G. I'M THERE! I am spending the same each month as I was with verizon, with a Smartphone plan. I love it!
IMPORTANT UPDATE: 04/03/10
I had to make a choice between my Droid Eris and purchasing a vehicle for the future. Of course, the vehicle won; so I no longer have the Eris *pout*. I hope everyone has fun with the future updates and conversations regarding the Eris and 2.x updates. I thank everyone that has helped me out and the 50+ who thanked for this Thread.
This is an UNOFFICIAL, UNFINISHED, LEAKED Version of 2.1. You agree to accept any responsibility and or damages resulting from using the information listed. Happy Upgrade!
SAVING APPLICATIONS
· Install “Sprite Mechanic” · Open Mechanic & Accept Liscense Agreement · Select “App Backup” · Go through the process (It will create a file called Sprite Backup with ALL your Free and Paid apps) · Mount your phone through your USB to your computer · Find “Sprite Backup” and copy it onto your Desktop
You just successfully copied all your apps. Unfortunately, Sprite Mechanic will not work on 2.1.
(You can even give your friends your paid apps for free. Cool, huh?)
SAVING MEDIA
· Mount your phone through your USB to your computer · Locate “DCIM” folder** · Copy all your Photos and Movie clips from “100MEDIA” to your desktop
UPGRADING PHONE
Follow These Simple Steps and You'll Be On
The Road to Your Eris Getting 2.1 In No Time!
· 2.1 Leak 2 - NEW · 108,819,939 bytes (106,270 KB or 103.81 MB) · Download: PB00IMG.zip
IMPORTANT: DO NOT RENAME ZIP. IT WILL NOT WORK OTHERWISE. · Backup all Important Information and apps (use information above) · Delete any useless information off the SD Card (I deleted everything, it wont hurt anything) · Setting > Security > Factory Data Reset > Reset Phone > Erase Everything · Allow Eris to fully perform a Factory Reset · Log into your Google Account · When prompted to press 1 or 2 on the *228 – Press 1 · Allow Eris to Program itself · Turn OFF Eris · Remove Back Cover of the Eris · Remove the SD Card and transfer PB00IMG.zip to it (DO NOT UNZIP IT)
(Or Mount using USB cable and transfer from your Computer to your Eris (Remember to UnMount)) ·SAFELY remove the SD Card from the Computer and insert it into the Eris and Replace Cover
This is the Point of No Return Once you do this, you cannot go back to 1.5, PERIOD.
· Charge your phone at least 50% or more.
· Start Eris by holding Volume DOWN and Power / End Call Buttons.
You will see this pop up with the 3 Droids on Skate Boards
· Let it do it's thing. There will be an Update bar on the top/right side of the screen. · It will ask you if you want to Update Phone In Red Text – Press Trackball · It will then ask if you want to Reboot Phone In Ted Text – Press Trackball · Eris will reset and perform like if it was a brand new phone. · Perform *228 with Option 1 & 2 · Enjoy!
Did the 2.1 Upgrade not install and your still left with 1.5? Go down to the Trouble Shooting section and see if any of the tips help out.
ADDING APPS & MEDIA BACK TO PHONE
IMPORTANT: DO NOT USE ANY APPLICATION THAT RESTORES (including Sprite Mechanic) It is a new OS, and not designed the same way of 1.5, so it will put files where they do not go!
· Open your Camera and take a picture (this will create a file called “DCIM” · Mount your phone through your USB to your computer · Inside “DCIM” open “100MEDIA” and move all your saved pictures and movie clips from your computer to the folder. · Copy the "Sprite Backup" folder you saved previously onto your SD Card (Not in any folder) · Unmount your phone · Install “Astro File Manager” · Open “Astro” find folder “Sprite Backup” and locate your backup apps
(the apps are going to be in the programmable name, not their actual title) · Click on the app you want to install · Click “Open App Manager” · Click “Install” then “Install” again
Go through this to get your all your apps back onto your phone.
Some apps may not be designed for 2.1, so they may not work.
SYNCING INFORMATION BACK TO PHONE
Even though your using a Smart Phone, it can be dumb at times.
Settings > Accounts & Sync
Under "General Sync Setting" you can tap on Auto-Sync to have your
phone Sync periodically to pull information from your account, to your phone.
Under "Manage Accounts" tap on your Google email.
It will list 3 different settings to Sync. Sync Contacts Sync Gmail Sync Calendar
Check which ever setting you want synced and when your phone Auto-Syncs.
You can also Uncheck Auto-Sync and check which ever setting you want to be Synced,
and click on "Sync Now" to only Sync when you want it. Very useful.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
This section will help you resolve any issues you may have while installing the Leaked 2.1 upgrade.
When new problems become known, we'll try and find a fix for it.
You ask.. "Why will the Leaked 2.1 not install on my Eris?".. Lets see if we can't find out.
1) Is the file on the lowest level of the SD Card?
2) Is the file named PB00IMG.zip? It cannot have (1) or anything like that on the name.
3) Is the file 103 MB (108,854,573 bytes)? If not, it did not download fully.
4) Phone froze while upgrading. Remove battery and replace. Restart phone.
Is there a way to transfer the file via USB or does the SD card HAVE to be in the computer (I don't have one of those microSD adapters and don't want to buy one).

You can transfer though USB(Cut and paste recommended) but you have to make sure it is formatted using the phone software istelf.
And big thanks smacky, you did a great job writing this out.

Not bad for a Muggle.
Shouldn't take long. There should be red text that pops up that asks if you want to install update, then if you want to reboot. Hit the trackball to confirm.
I followed all the instructions. When it rebooted, it was just stuck on the very first start screen. I pulled the SD card out, pulled the battery and restarted the phone, worked this time! Thanks for all the information.
Go ahead and request this to be stickied. I don't know how you could have dumbed-down the directions any more.... and that's a good thing.
I work in Fast Food and a Majority of my employees are kids... so dumbing instructions to fit their tiny-ass brains comes second nature. lol!
Plus there isn't any point in our case making it so hard to understand that you turn your phone into a paperweight. It's a $99 phone. Thats an expensive brick. lol
I just did a straight up install though I later did the *228 thing. Have the same issues that most have reported but the signal issue is the real bummer. I have a replacement phone in hand (vibrator failed) and put 2.1 on the old to try it out but if the signal issue is inherent I won't be upgrading the new phone.
Do you really need to do the *228 thing twice, if at all? It worked just fine on mine without.
I recommend it to make sure it fully takes to the phone. That way you don't have a big of a chance of causing a problem before/during/after upgrade.

Lawsuit for what? Someone from China leaking out a device, and someone in the States figuring out how to us it.. and not making a profit from it? lol Unlikely, but better safe than sorry!

That's why I'd say to not to cut corners when it comes to an unfinished update. Low signal shound't be an issue unless you just can't get a signal.
Mine did lose signal streangth, but not too much to effect me. The official release should correct this.

Well I upgraded shortly after the leak was announced...before all the nifty tips and such were published lol.
Signal is a major issue. I'm getting significantly lower signal -- 1 or no bars on 3G with frequent drops to 1x -- in places where I typically get 5 full bars of 3G. There's obviously something going on. Just need to figure out if it was an install problem or a(nother) flaw in the ROM itself.
I think I'll try a fresh install following these destructions n see if there's an improvement. If not, well damn...more waiting on 2.1 for me. I've already gotten used to a lot of 2.1 so going back will not be easy lol.
This may be a dumb question but, when the Verizon version rolls out how will I get the update?
When Verizon official releases the OTA for the Eris, it'll be just like a regular update. The phone will download the update, and prompt you that you have a new update. Then, you'll install it.
Now here is the kicker that may **** us in the end. If the versions listed in the leak and the official update are the same, thoes of us that installed the leak, may not get the update if all the version, serial and rom numbers match. It may think we already have it, and not install it. So installing the leak is like a double edged sword. Though, one of the forum memebers (i don't remember of the top of my head who) said she downloaded a leaked update to one of her other android based phones, and when the official OTA update came out, she got it with no problem.
Thanks for the info Matlock, great stuff. I keep hearing about more than one version of the 2.1 Leak for Eris. Is there a way to know which one I got when I installed it last week?

There are only two that were released by the HTC employee in China. A main Rom and a patched version. The patched version is the one I recommend using, and the one I listed. it has less problems with its stability on the Eris than the main version. As far as multiple versions.. there may be. If somone has the knowledge and skill, and time, there may be modified versions floating around. I know people are working on adapting the Eris leak to the Hero.

this is the only reason why i am holding off on the update right now doing it manually. it would suck if the phone will not get the full legit 2.1 update. esp. if i did this today and then in less than a week the real 2.1 update comes out. supper fudged if it didn't get the update. i would be pissed off like all hell.

And that is a very good reason. I thought the same thing. But I wanted to see for myself the bugs and stuff in the update. I found them, but I think I made a good choice. If I did screw myself, ill just have to go buy a Wal-Mart flip phone. Lol

Just a few minor things to point out here.:
The original, unpatched version was the only one leaked by the supposed Chinese HTC employee. It was mildly corrupted, and the boys over at XDA brute forced their way in and came up with a patch for it. So the credit goes to the XDA devs for the working version most of us are now using (btw, the unpatched version simply won't work at all)
The other one that has been floating around came to us by way of Caddyman.. Possibly came from a different source than "disgruntled Chinese HTC employee" but it has been checked and found to be the exact same thing as the first one that was leaked and patched.
Just want to make sure credit is given where it's due.

Keep in mind that it appears we have a rather early test build, and that when all of the bugs fixes (or more than there are now) are implemented for the official version, the build number will most likely change, and the phone will accept it OTA. There are also other reasons that lead me to believe that even if they push the exact same build number with just a few fixes in it, we'll still be able to get it OTA anyway. Plus, there's always PCD to get it from.
All previously mentioned things aside, it's a great tutorial so huge props to Matlock for writing it.

i might just do it tonight since if the build will change plus all this hype about eris no longer being made or available looks like this phone is extint or history in a couple months
I was thinking the same thing. I am a bit freaked out about messing it up. I just got my phone on 2/5/10. I don't have very many apps on it, the ones I do have are the free ones....
I will wait until the weekend and see what happens, then all bets are off....

Such is the life of technology. It only lasts a few months and something brand new and more advanced comes out. Like the G1 that started it all. It was barely a year old when the Next-generation came out. So expect the same for the Eris.

Thanks everyone for the stuff on this forum...
Steve
I wouldn't rush into it since you just got your Eris. Wait at least until the end of March. If the update dosn't come out by then, rip into that 2.1 leak and have at it on your phone! lol
As long you set your contacts (when you add them to your phone) to Google, and not to Phone; It should automatically Sync from your Google account to your phone when it starts up for the first time with 2.1. If not, you may have to do your own Sync.
Settings > Accounts & Sync
Under "Manage Accounts" tap on your Google email.
It will list 3 different settings to Sync. Make sure "Sync Contacts" is checked then tap on "Sync Now" on the lower left of your screen.
This should bring all your contacts stored on your Google accounts to your smart phone.

Many Thanks!!!! I went to the verizon store after doing a factory reset 2days ago and they tried to charge me $10 bucks I was like no way (argued with them and didn't end up paying). I still had my old phone had no clue it saved all your contacts that way. taking forever for me to sync all the contacts though that little thing keeps moving around and around and still not done.
Also, You need the micro SD card adaptor to do the upgrade right? Like you said not to put the file on the SD card from the computer through the USB cable? I must take the SD card out and put the little SD card in the bigger SD card then in my universal card reader then put the file on that way??

You can use the USB cable to transfer the 2.1 file to your phone. Just make sure it is on the first level on the card; not in any folder. You should be good from there. I say use a Micro Adapter for saftey so there isn't as big margin of error when doing the transfer. Nothing worse than having a single file not transfer, and it be the most important file for the upgrade. lol But yeah, you'll be file with the USB cable to transfer.

alright, thanks. about to do this right now!!!!
real quick though, can i just delete everything off the SD card? i already saved everything on my work computer and home computer and my contacts are on gmail when i looked under it through gmail.com/contacts
I think i am all set to go. I have no app's on the phone at least important ones because I just did a factory reset 2 days ago. Is it cool for me to just jump to this now or do the whole factory reset again and follow the instructions?

You sure can. Don't format the card though. It's already formatted for the Eris, so your good there.
You should be fine upgrading right now with no problems. I'll keep an eye on this thread if you have any questions while your upgrading.

Wow, I can't believe it took me this long to download 2.1
I feel lame. For those who don't have it I guess it's cool waiting for the offical update. The phone is like supper snappy. I read through the 20pages of bugs and honestly have no clue what 2-3 guys said about the phone being more laggy.
since i just got my Eris a couple hours ago I think I might just wait at least till the end of the month and see if the update comes out, and if its doesnt then I will go that route... i androiid keep me updated on how its working out for you.

The HTC Droid Eris launched for Verizon Wireless on November 6th in part as the carrier's first Android Phone. However it was overshadowed by the other member of the inaugural Verizon Droid duo - the Motorola Droid. The Droid Eris might look fa... Read More
