Default browse internet while talking on the phone?

My phone will not allow me to search the internet while I'm on a call. Isn't this something the Eris should do?

No, it's a function of the CDMA network.

If you're on 3G, no, you can't. 3G shuts off when a call is made or received.

Use WiFi.

maybe its a data load issue that verizon doesn't want to kill voice quality and the battery drain?

YUP, AT&T touts this as a great feature of the iPhone. I really don't see the use for it though, and our phones can still do it on WiFi anyways. But can the iPhone stream Pandora, browse the web, and have a text convo at the same same? I don't think so.

No, it has to do with the way that CDMA handles the voice and data carriers. They are separate. GSM utilizes combined carriers.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I've seen the iPhone commercials, but I just assumed that was something Droid has been able to do all along. Oh well, it's not that big of deal, I was just curious.

Don't believe the iPhone commercials though. The iPhone can't keep a phone call going long enough to really make this feature useful anyway. The call is usually dropped before you get the browser open.

Good point. I don't think there is a feature in existence that would convince me to go with at&t.

If it is a CDMA thing, then the only carriers in the US that could be able to do it would be AT&T and T-Mobile. It's not a phone thing, it's a carrier thing.

Actually, Apple touts this as a great feature of the iPhone, not AT&T. The awful AT&T ads with Luke Wilson don't even mention it.

They have one that does. The guy has two different droids and is trying to surf and talk at the same time while dropping one of the phones repeatedly. I was in a bar when the add came on and a 70 something year old woman yelled out, "That is so stupid! Why doesn't the idiot use bluetooth?!?" I, along with several others, loled very hard.

Ahh, I must have missed the AT&T ones that talk about talking and surfing. The Apple ones are really well done, they showcase practical use cases, that make me almost miss the ability to talk and surf at the same time. But the AT&T ads are just stupid.

Practical? Paying a $150 for some flowers is practical?

A buddy of mine called me on my Eris while he was driving, and asked me for directions (I was on my home Wi-Fi network). I was able to open Google Maps, but it froze up when I tried to search directions. I ended up having to go to my pc so that I could talk and look up directions at the same time.

DROID DOES! I am able to use data and phone over wifi and 1x. It is a radio issue. The CDMA network uses the same radio, and frequency for 3G(data, broadband) and 1x(voice, slow data...) it's simply unable to transmit both and once. Where as the iPhone is a GSM Radio. It uses 2 different frequencies and radios i believe(don't want to take the time to research to be absolutely certain lol) to transmit voice and Data. That is *IF* you even get voice coverage and data, lol fastest 3G(at&t) yea maybe, where ur able to get coverage. I'll settle for slower 3G that is *all over* vs. the faster *limited coverage*

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT LOL
