I love you, but we are gonna have to break up, . . . . im sorry
Im thinking bout returning my ERIS, i dont want to, i really like the phone - alot, alot , alot, . . . . . i became anti-social and didnt talk so much shit at work, it worked out really well .
But the "phone" function is killing me, the vibrate is too "soft" and i dont hear calls, but the calls are answered in my pocket, i have to keep my phone on vibrate at work and missing calls and having someone in my pocket screaming at me is not good [ i work on film sets, so its definitely not a good thing ].
I did the Lockbot thing but that didnt really help. . . . .

I see his point though - I miss calls and notifications all day long with the phone on vibrate. It's just not all that strong.
But dash-mounting in the car and taking it out of my pocket when I am in one place for a while is enough of a solution for me. Besides, I like to look at it!

Reason: spelling
I say:
Go ahead and return it if this is too big of an issue.
Try something else. The Eris can't be for everyone, and I'd rather lose an unhappy member of the "Eris" community and keep a happy (hopefully) Android community member.
But that's just me.
Good luck! Maybe someone will have an idea to help you stay happy with your Eris. I love mine.
Honestly, to me that isn't a deal killer, but that's me...I rarely put my phone on vibrate, I don't put it in my pocket...I use a holster. Maybe that would help, I don't know. I have a habit of always checking my phone so I am never far behind. I love this phone.
I just remembered what I suggested to someone a while back who had the same problem.
I suggested using a very simple ringtone (which would probably mean a custom one you make, not something the phone has) like woodblock (ok, the phone has this one as a notification sound) or downloading the Mosquito ringtone and having you volume all the way up. If you don't know what the Mosquito ringtone is, Google it and you'll find some links to it too.
A friend of mine uses it in classes and it works wonders for him. It's his message notification, though, so it's useful for texting.
Use Mosquito in conjunction with the app that alters your alerts depending on your location (yes, it really does exist) and that should prevent you from having dogs attack you every time your phone rings off the set.

The missed call thing does agitate me. I noticed the ringtone plays for about 2 seconds then fades away. After that the little trackball flashes.
Anyone know how to fix that? I just don't know why the ringtone fades out like that.

The "Old_Phone" ringtone that comes with the phone is about as simple as you can get, IMO. And it's been more than distinct for me to be able to hear it when I'm upstairs in my home and my ERIS is sitting on the kitchen table downstairs. But I also have the ringer volume level up as loud as it can go.
My husband has the same issue with not feeling the phone vibrate in his pocket, so I fully sympathize.
I definitely hear what you're saying, lgh, and this has been one of my biggest gripes about 'smartphones' in general - that, one would assume, if you're going to take a device and improve upon it, you first make sure all of the basic functions of that device (in this case, A CELLULAR TELEPHONE) work properly and effectively. I've yet to hear of a smartphone of any kind that does that.

Back when I had 1.5 I was standing in line at the post office. I heard this Star Wars Darth Vader ringtone going off. I didn't think much of it until I got home and notice I missed a call from my ex. I forgot I had set her to that ringtone.
I say that to say this. I think sometimes I change ringtones so often I don't recognize it right off the bat. Especially if I'm in a crowded area and the phone is in my pocket.
Its funny to me that people seem to get bent out of shape if someone does not like the phone, . . . . . . and just to get it ****IN straight, i love the phone . . . . . . there are just a few small issues that are really affecting me in a bad way.
Im already getting the boot out the door and i aint even signed the ****in divorce papers . . . . . . jesus ****in christ.
. . . . now that i feel better, . . . . . i might actually keep it
Okay I can't believe my first non-lurking moment is going to be off topic but a) OtD I can't believe this is your first ThinkGeek experience, you are so techy! and b) I myself deeply desire a Taun Taun sleeping bag ThinkGeek :: Tauntaun Sleeping Bag that I have *absolutely* no use for

LOL, I had actually never heard of it before. I may be techy in my love for gadgets and computers, but I don't hang out with that many techy people. Most of my friends aren't that into tech and the ones that are only are because of their jobs. It is probably one of the reasons I am so willing to jump into conversations on here. This is really one of my major tech talk outlets. My girl and most of our friends just roll their eyes at me when I go into full geek mode. My daughter is going to be worse than me though, she absolutely loves gadgets. I am going to break the bank on that site at Christmas time.
I don't know if I would have bought anything if I hadn't found the Horror Movie Shower Curtain & Bath Mat Everyone at home loved it when I showed them the pictures. We may repaint the guest bathroom in blood splatter now. I know I am twisted, but you have to admit it will funny as hell when company comes over.
BTW, welcome to the site. Glad you came out of hiding.
I might consider the sleeping bag for my son, if it ever goes on sale. He loves Star Wars, Batman and Indiana Jones (Thanks Lego Wii games), but I can't see paying $100 for it.

You think it would fade if I have it in my pocket walking around? Could be why people are missing calls.
It definitely says "Reduce ring volume when I MOVE phone"
Maybe I'm over thinking this one. If the phone is set to vibrate and ring won't the vibrations move the phone enough to lower the ring volume?
Yep, you're over thinking it.
And yep, there is enough movement in a pocket to reduce volume, or at least it did it to me - unless I was sitting absolutely still at my desk.
I had to turn off that particular feature to hear my phone ring.

Oh sure, now you're just toying with our emotions...
No wait, that can't be, we don't really care.
For messages, in Handcent, I use a custom vibration pattern, to RAPIDLY on/off vibrate five times.
Gets my attention every time. The vibrating itself, not so much. The vibrating going on/off/on/off/on/off/on/off... yes.
There is also a free app in the market called Smart Vibrator that lets you make and set custom vibration patterns for calls and text messages. It doesn't necessarily vibrate stronger, but allows for longer vibration when the phone is notifying you of a call or text. I have missed less calls and texts with it.
