Swype: Can you edit the dictionary easily?
I've looked for other threads about editing Swype's dictionary but have found none, so will ask here:
I love using Swype Lite (1.16.12.5228) but have found the dictionary and the little word options popup to be less than helpful. I've tried to add words individually per the instructions saying to add each letter carefully then press the space bar, but the new word doesn't seem to be available the next time. And when I do try to enter 1 letter at a time it automatically adds another letter and spaces to each of the letters I'm trying to tap in. FRUSTRATING.
I would love to know if I can access Swype's dictionary through the SD card or wherever, and go in there and edit the shit out of it. Anybody know how, or if it's possible?
First, I would go into Swype's settings and uncheck "Word Prediction". Then, when you do TYPE (not swype) words into the keyboard, make sure you don't go too fast. If you do, it will sometimes think you're trying to swype instead of type, with weird results.
Secondly, the Word Options box is mostly meant to be ignored while swyping, and is mainly helpful for those short words whose swypes are very similar (or/our/out), or for going back and editing what you've written (to do so, just press anywhere within the word you want to edit, and then press the Swype key in the lower-left corner to pull up the box). Also, you can customize how often the Word Options box pops up in Swype's settings.
Lastly, if you TYPE (not swype) in a new word, Swype automatically saves it when you hit the space bar. The above editing trick (pressing within the word and then pressing the Swype key) works to force Swype to delete those words that you've added by typing.
Hope this helps.
EDIT: I found that there is currently no provision for deleting words from Swype's original dictionary. Only custom words (added by typing) can be deleted by the above method.

I appreciate your response. I knew both of those tricks but darn was really hoping someone would give me the magic key to simply open the file Swype uses as its dictionary then go in and do my thing. Can't do that in MS Word either but hey thought I'd ask... : )
I see. I wish I had that 'magic key' for you...I'd be using it myself! I'm sure some aspiring developer will find it sooner or later. If I hear anything, I'll be sure to let you know.
I would like to know if my passwords are ending up in swype. I know it doesn't add words typed in a password box, but sometimes I enter passwords into an encrypted file and would have tapped them in with swype. It would be great to just look at the list and cull passwords and spelling errors.

I'm curious where the swype DB is stored in the system, when flashing from one ROM to a new one, I always lose my custom words, and titanium backup doesn't seem to back them up.... there must be a manual way to grab those files..
Guys
i hope you don't me piggy-backing on this thread. I love swype for letters but when it comes to numbers, the only way I know of is holding each key down for about a second till it chooses and displays the number and you can go to the next one
I miss being able to simply quickly press a key for a number and the next one. Is there a mode like a shift key I can press and go hit my numbers faster than what I'm doing?

you have a few choices if you can find them:
swype-hvga-2.4.44-en-hacked.apk (may find it without the hacked part)
Swype-hvga-1.60.36.8214-en-lite.apk (may find it without the lite part)
I couldn't tell you were to find them though, you'll have to get creative. The latest verison is much much faster and cleaned up. It's getting really good, wish they would just start selling it already.
SwiftKey finally started selling there keyboard and they sold 30,000 license within the first couple of days.. at $.99 a pop (introductory price) thats 29,700 revenue.... I'd say that pays for one developer in the first few days. The price will go up, so if anyone is interested they are a GREAT keyboard option. I did beta test for them, and was impressed.
updated, found out pricing goes up to $3.99 Oct 1st... $.99 is well worth the price.

the swype key can be used to save selected words, right? so how about this? on ur pc type all ur words and save it as text document, then on ur device open the file, select(highlight) all those words and press the swype key...everything is saved. though i'm not sure how many words can be saved at a time.

So what I learned today was there is a somewhat easdy way to delete a word from your dictionary.
I typed TIO in one text when learning spanish and ever since then every time I swype to it picks tio first. been driving me nuts
then all of a sudden I swyped to again and tio came up so I touched tio, highlighted it and a help tip poped up. i hate when that happens but I actually read it and it said, if you want to delete a created word just highlight the word and hit the swype key on the lower left (S key)
Well did it then it askes are you sure you want to delete TIO, yes.
BAM GONE!!!!!!!!!!

Great idea psiko.
I've just added 85 words in one go

By the way, did NOT have "look for ages" if you simply read the SWYPE MANUAL that came with the install...found in the settings!!!
Sorry you had to wait so long...but a good lesson on READING THE MANUAL!!

I'm happy you got yours resolved, I've actually got the same word giving me problems. I've tried this method a thousand times, but the difference is that mine doesn't give me an option to delete. It gives me an error message saying that "The word "Tìo" cannot be added to your Swype dictionary because "ì" is not a legal character for a dictionary word." (I'm using the actual spelling of Tìo) It's bugging the SHIT out of me when trying to type "to". Anybody know a workaround?
How odd. I just added and deleted tìo and it worked fine. To add, you simply type the word. To remove, you highlight by double tapping and hitting the Swype key. Tìo (just removed) is now gone. To to to. Yep.
What I want to know is how to stop it from using my address book. I have a friend with the last name "fite" and "donner". I get that when I type "for" and "dinner". Don't want to change their names. Deleted it over and over, but Swype keeps bringing them.

Just a possibility: try editing the word "Tìo" when in Spanish Dictionary mode? I've not tried it but I suppose it kinda makes sense?

...you can TOTALLY do that in MS Word! It's especially fun if you just edit a few common words into slight misspellings while your friend is writing a paper!

This beta, especially with the custom dictionary looks awesome. I was going to install it but I have an infuse and the beta page says it wont work on a phone that has Swype preinstalled. Is there a simple way around that without rooting?

Unfortunately, without rooting, you're not going to be able to do it. You'll need Titanium Backup Pros root functions to remove the Swype apk/app file (as well as use a file explorer to remove some other files).
Here is a post of mine in the Swype forums, below which you'll see a Swype Forum Administrator, Brian, kindly explain how to remove the pre-installed Swype and get back on the beta.
The above thread is a Droid X thread but the process is the same for my EVO and I would assume ANY rooted Android phone.
I'll tell ya, if you're on the fence with rooting and like Swype besides the OBVIOUS BENEFITS of rooting including backing up all your apps...not only that...your ENTIRE PHONE so that you can restore it AS IS/AS WAS if you have a problem...this latest Swype beta is sweet!!

Just wanted to make sure that if you follow your above suggestion (which was mentioned in the link quote in my post just before your reply which is How To Delete Swype User Dictionary (for Android) ) you not only "clear the annoying tapped in words" but you clear everything...the Swype words, your Swype settings and preferences!! Bit over-kill to remove the words unless you intend on wiping EVERYTHING.
If you follow the link above, yes, you can wipe EVERYTHING but you can also manually delete the annoying/mistyped words if you follow the instructions to "Delete Typo by Typo"
And if you have one of the more recent beta versions of Swype, you can go Home —> Menu —> Settings —> Language & keyboard —> Swype Settings —> Personal Dictionary and simply "+" to add a word and "-" to BULK/BATCH remove nonsense/accidental/unwanted words!
