knowing I wouldn't get a real answer I sent an email to HTC to find out about ICS. Here's what I got back:
Quote:
I know how handy it is to get the latest software and I will be glad to help out. Your device is slated to receive Ice Cream Sandwich, however HTC does not announce dates for release of software due to the nature of the software development process. At any point in the software development cycle an situation may be encountered that requires anything from some minor additional rework to complete rewrites of the software base. Only after the final acceptance testing has been successfully completed will HTC release software. The normal time period between the final acceptance testing and release of software is about a week and often shorter than that.

Yes, let the breath holding begin I do hope this update happens and breathes (pun intended) some new life into the Dinc 2. Video acceleration in hardware (supported in ICS right?) may reduce the lag that I often experience and make me want to keep the phone longer. It will also make it possible to use some android 4.0+ specific software, such as Nova Launcher.

Default Incredible 2 Update to ICS

Don't hold your breath on this happening, Version has discontinued this phone and have no monetary reason to upgrade it.

Is there evidence to suggest that Verizon cancels previously announced updates when a phone gets "discontinued"? Updates take time to create and it seems more likely to me that Verizon would follow through. HTC has confirmed the update which is as good as it gets short of Verizon announcing it. Still it makes sense to not be over-invested. I'm ready to move on if the update doesn't happen.

This is why Verizon has a reason to update this phone.

Or a reason not to. Figure you'll buy a new phone, stay on the same network. Most people don't want to switch carriers, but get them wanting the newest and greatest and they'll upgrade.
I'm not saying I think this is what they're doing, but it is possible.

I think it's a balancing act. Although it may sometimes appear that Verizon couldn't care less about what customers think I believe how they are perceived is important to them. In the long run people would switch to other carriers if Verizon developed the reputation of poor customer service (well, customer service worse than everyone else )

Didn't the DINC get an update (or two) after being discontinued?

It started off on Eclair, then got FroYo and finally GB (and some mods). However it was still being sold by Verizon as of a few weeks ago (albeit in a 2nd hand form).

I'd venture to say that Verizon is mainly interested in having us continue to send them money every month. If upgrading the software makes the phone seem all shiney again, there's no reason to look at other carriers.

Software upgrades involve both perception and functionality. In other words getting an upgrade makes us feel a phone is still relevant even if it does nothing else. However it may also bring fixes and improvements. As far as I could tell the upgrade to Gingerbread made no perceivable difference on the Inc2. ICS though supports hardware acceleration and depending on the capability of the Inc2 GPU that could make a significant difference. That's the main reason I'm interested as I find the performance of the Inc2 on stock GB borderline acceptable. I doubt that it would make enough difference to make me put off getting a new phone when I'm eligible for a discounted upgrade, but it will improve the current experience and make me want to keep the Inc2 as a backup or hand it on to a family member. In my mind Verizon "wins" by pushing out this update.

I need ICS on the dinc2 to extend its life long enough for HTC to release a good phone on VZW. If it doesn't get ICS then I'll have to drop HTC.

Amen!
I don't ever want to leave HTC but they better come up with a good one by the time my upgrade is due.
To be honest, I don't know what I'll do if they don't. I'm not a very patient man.

So what, exactly, were you looking for in a HTC phone that the Inc4G didn't deliver? There is no better processor available, and the screen is fantastic, albeit small. Unless you want a bigger screen, there is nothing more it could have been.

And even if it is only "mid range" as you said, does that make it not good?

EDIT:
I loved my Eris and love my DInc2 even more.

Besides screen size, the DInc4G is perfect in my book.
I know it is a 4" screen as our DInc2 is, but since the aspect ratio changed it actually feels smaller to me.
I want to continue my path up in screen size. Slowly.

The Rezound is about perfect for screen size, so I bought one and the screen is beautiful. I'm having a hard time adjusting to it and likely will be back on my DInc2 full time soon though.
I have never had so much trouble with a phone. I may have been spoiled with the Eris and DInc2. They're both so easy and the dev'n so great. I just can't find anything stable enough and good on battery life for the Rez. Flashing has been horrendously buggy for me.
And the thing weighs a half-ton.

If I could have the DInc4G with a 4.3-4.5 inch screen I would be in heaven. Just that tiny bit would make all the difference to me.

There's a good video review of the HTC Inc 4G on phonedog.com. They do a side by side comparison with the Galaxy SG3 and the HTC makes a strong showing. The smaller screen is really the only significant difference that I can see. The slower clock speed doesn't seem to make much difference. The Quandrant Standard scores were almost equal, and almost 4X higher than the Inc 2.

I used to have an Eris as well. I don't know where your fond memories come from, but I remember it being an extremely slow phone with a super tiny screen. You had to root it to even make it usable.

Yes, but the rooting process and flashing was so easy! And when I flash something on my DInc2 as was the case with my Eris, it worked like it "should".

Just noticed today on my Incredible2 that when I am on a call, there is a small Green Droid with the quote "in 3 days" under him! What is this? Never seen this before and I take it to mean that the update is coming in 3 days?!!!

Do you know what a screen shot is?

Why is no one else reporting this "Small green droid"?

Maybe you're special. Maybe you're the prophet of the end-times. Maybe the little green droid is the harbinger of doom.

Or, maybe you're the only one that gets ICS in two days

I updated my daughters iPhone 4s to iOS6 last night. It took a while but it worked. I'm still waiting for my ICS though.

Last night I asked HTC, on Facebook, for an update. Here's their "response"
"Unfortunately, we don't have anything additional to share. We'll definitely keep you posted as soon as we do!"

I swear, if Apple had a decent map app I'd got to iPhone in a heartbeat

Motorola recently announced that a number of phones originally promised ICS would not be updated. If the ICS update for the Dinc2 has been canceled it would be nice if HTC would just come out and say so.

HTC just released their earnings for last quarter, and they're down again. Better customer service would be in their best interest.
I have been a die hard HTC fan for some time now, but I'm losing faith in them.
If they don't come out with a damn good phone for Verizon soon, I'll be moving on to Sammy or Moto.
