Default Proximity sensor always on.

My phone died last night while I was out and when I plugged it in this morning the infrared light came on and has been on ever since. It is glowing bright red brighter than it would be during a phone call and won't turn off. It's causing that area of the phone to be extra warm and killing my battery. I had my phone charging for like 4 hours and it only made it to 50%. Does anyone have any clue as to why this might happen?

Something isn't clear here. You can not see infrared. It is not in the spectrum of visible light.
Are you talking about the amber led?
And what does this have to do with your proximity sensor?

The proximity sensor is to the left of the Verizon checkmark and the color appears to be nearly infrared.

Download elixor2 from the market and click on sensors. Proximity sensor is listed there and you can turn it off via that.

When in a dark room I can see the proximity sensor on, it's like a faint blinking red color light, usually when on an active phone call or when the phone rings I notice it.

I am having a similar problem on a HTC Inc S but it's not Viber app. My phone got wet, and now after drying it out, the Proximity Sensor is glowing red, and when using a camera I can see the proximity sensor IR LED is FULL ON all the time.

Because of this I cannot unlock my phone from the home screen AT ALL. Even with headphones plugged in and USB cable plugged in. I cannot unlock the phone! I cannot install any prox sensor app recalibrate, nothing. I'm stuck. All I can do is turn the phone on, and then pull the battery to turn it off. The battery also goes flat very quickly an the screen never goes completely black. The back light stays on, even when the screen is "black".

Can anyone tell me how I can disable the proximity sensor if I can't get into the settings?

I should also mention that the touch screen does not work at all. I think this is because the Proximity Sensor is stopping it. This is because I took the touch screen from a working phone (my GF has same handset) and put that screen on this phone. Exactly the same, no difference.

With the touch screen not working, I cannot use a boot manager, or recovery screen, or anything that doesn't work with the Vol Up/Down and Power buttons only.

When I try to call the phone, the calling phone hears two rings then stops, and the HTC does not show the incoming call, but simply re-boots. If a text msg comes in, it receives it, but I cannot unlock the home screen by any means. App updates turn up in the notification bar, but I can't do anything with those either.

Here is a picture of the proximity sensor glowing red / full on.
