Does anyone know what this status icon is (it's on the right side)? I don't think I've ever seen that one before. I hope it's something I can take away. I really don't need another permanent icon at the top.
Nevermind I found my answer. It's the icon for NFC. Now, how to get rid of it. I have my NFC on all the time, I don't need more clutter up there.
FYI. This showed up with the update. It wasn't there before.

I just got the update as well and have the same status icon.
I'd love to update, but my software update just goes around in circles when I check for new software. I get no indication of whether or not there's new software available, it just goes right back to the main software update screen.
Since this update reset my ringtones, I got suspicious and started looking through all the settings just in case something else got changed.......so what's with this "prefered network" setting under the CALL options?
Was this here before this new update?
It shows the set of selections as "Global", "LTE/CDMA", and "GSM/UMTS" and it's set to "Global".
Shouldn't it be set to "LTE/CDMA"???

Think a link above mentioned that this update adds global roaming. I installed the update but have had no time to play around to see what else is new.

I did a little followup... yeah, I see that it added the Global option. I also found out that you probably want to go in there and change it to LTE/CDMA unless you are gonna use it outside the Continental USA. Reason being that the global setting will run your battery down a lot faster. Just another radio to run and constantly searching for a signal.
I found that out real quick! And changing to LTE/CDMA will not reduce any performance as far as i can tell..... just saves your battery!
Update loaded for me this morning after taking it off the charger. I was surprised it started loading by itself and didn't wait for me to confirm. Oh well.

So, I went to check for the update at settings-> software update-> Check new and I didn't get any pop-up or response. I thought the phone had network problems but everything checked out fine for downloading.
I rebooted the phone and immediately saw the firmware update.
Proceeded with the update and everything looks fine so far.
One caveat, which has been mentioned, is that the default setting for your network is now Global. I recommend changing that back to LTE/CDMA mode at Settings-> Network settings-> Preferred Network.
Battery has been good so far. I haven't noticed any improvement in reception either as described in their documentation. I am in a good reception area, though, so I won't know until I get farther from the towers.
Mine warned me about the update but I postponed it a couple times until I could learn more about the update. I let the updater do its thing yesterday and after the multiple reboots which are expected, everything on the phone continue to work well. I didn't notice any changes at all.
When I read one of the responses above say that the 'global' network was selected, I checked mine and found the same thing.
I thought global had to be requested to be added as a feature on a person's plan. What would happen if we just leave it set? I haven't noticed any battery drain since the update, so I'm thinking about leaving it set.
The NFC icon doesn't show up on my phone anywhere. For those of you who see it - where does the icon appear?

For the global, I would recommend putting your preferred network to LTE/CDMA. There is no telling what type of performance you will get with that setting until it is vetted out. Or, it just might not make any difference anyways.
The NFC icon won't show up until you turn that feature on. It was off by default on my phone. Go to Settings -> More -> NFC. When you select it, you will see a thick white "N" icon beside your 3G/4G symbol. De-select to turn it off.

Both my coworker and I have this phone, and neither one of us had gotten the update until a few days ago. I suspect it was because both of us were primarily on WiFi. What I did for both phones (which was successful) was put them both on 4G, then plug into the charger briefly. When I took mine off the charger, the update was there in my notifications. My coworker's wasn't, but I found his by doing the Software Update in Settings. It's going to ask you to proceed several times, as well as reboot a few times.

I thought the firmware update was supposed to make this phone switch between wifi and cell network much smoother?
Well when I am at work, the guest network has saturation issues. So it is hit and miss to be able to get onto the wireless guest network here. But, if I do happen to get on it and then let my phone sit for a while, then go back and try to surf the web or stream music, etc... If you can't reconnect to the guest Wi-Fi network, then the phone just doesn't know what to do. It will not switch over and use the cellular network. I have to actually shut off my Wi-Fi, let it change over to the cellular network, and then I can turn the Wi-Fi back on. Then my phone will use the cellular network until it can connect to the guest Wi-Fi network again. However once it connects to the guest Wi-Fi again, it will not switch back to the cellular network without me repeating the same process.
For those that have the upgrade, are you having ring tone issues? I keep trying to change mine, but it seems to revert back to Docked. I'm not sure if it's an NFC tag issue (resets it when I use a tag) or if it was the upgrade (I guess I could stop using the tags and see). But I just thought it's weird either way.

Have you tried Settings>Personalize>sound tab? This plagued me for quite awhile when I first got the phone, as my notification ringtones kept re-setting to default.
FWIW after any update some things improve, other little quirks start appearing, and this one is no exception. A lot of people automatically do a factory reset whenever there is an update. I would have, but root is almost here, and I don't want to do it twice.

Thanks. I did do that. Today, I didn't touch an NFC tag. I tried an NFC tag and voila, that's what changes my ringtone although I have it set to Defined (for the ringtone). Instead it changes it to Docked. No clue. I guess it's either a tag issue, tag software issue, or something. But probably not the update.
Guess I should have tried that first. Now to figure out why my tags are changing it.
So still no update.... One other odd thing is when I check for updates, it starts looking and then just goes back to the menu option. It never tells me there are no new updates.... I have tried restarting the phone, removing the battery, even factory reset the phone, still same results. I took it to a Verizon store and they said there is nothing they can do. Their only recommendation is to call HTC and see if they can help or exchange the phone under warranty. I really don't want to do that.... Anyone else have this problem or am I alone on this?

I called today and was told they are still rolling it out. Guy told me to try going on wifi and checking to see if that will download the software. Of course...it didn't. I was told to call HTC as well but this is a Verizon issue not HTC. Oh well...I'll keep waiting.

That's exactly what I saw prior to getting the update. It was annoying and I assumed something was wrong. Eventually I got the update.
Just a quick note. Since the update loaded, my phone has been EXTREMELY stable. I've never had a smartphone that could run for 2 weeks without a reboot. This one is doing it now.

I concur completely. The phone post-update is nearly perfect.
