When is the new Android Market supposed to launch? I've read that it's already done so, but I still have the 'old' Market...

I think this week or next. I don't like it so far. So much more they could have done and I am a bit skeptical about the 15 minute refund window. I know it cuts down on piracy but as many have mentioned. I have had an app run fine for a couple hours then I realize it drains the heck out of my battery or doesn't work well with other applications.

I don't know WHAT they were smoking when making that 15-minute rule. I mean really.. So often I dl an app, and don't even LOOK at it inside 15 min, much less decide if it's a keeper or not. Musta been smokin that good ish. We all need to raise a big enough stink about it so they change it back, or at minimum just longer than 15 min.

And yeah, I can't wait for the new Market either- the current one is needle-in-a-haystack browsing.

If you are rooted and don't have it yet, you can dl it from here: [APK] New Market [11 dec 2010] - xda-developers

Boot into recovery and install.

Yeah...that's messed up.

If you're trying something like Tasker, or a RDP client, etc you can barely test the BASIC functionality of the app in 15 minutes.

I downloaded it last night from the xda link (not rooted), and it's pretty cool. I agree though with the 15 minute rule. That's pretty lame.

You don't need to boot into recovery, just install the apk:

xda-developers - View Single Post - New Market

Works just fine, no force closing like a lot of people experience by looking in recovery.

I would assume since you install the apk from a file manager (Astro, etc) that you wouldn't need root. I'm not 100% certain though. I haven't even installed it yet and I am rooted. I'm going to get on that now actually

Edit: I just downloaded and installed via Astro. When d/ling the phone said there was no application available to open it with but I had no issue upgrading. Under vending (which the market is called...vending.apk) I opened with app manager and there was an upgrade button which i clicked on. I noticed there are a TON of Chinese apps now. It's a decent cosmetic upgrade though. 15 minute app refund is BS, IMO. I know pirating apps is a huge problem for developers but 15 minutes is pointless.

I played around with it before flashing MIUI on my phone. I don't mind the new interface so much. Much like the rest of you I have my doubts on this new 15 minute rule.

I just opened the market and have the new one. I didn't do anything to update it; I didn't even accept an update. It's just there.

I kind of hate that half of the screen is taken up with the dashboard at the top when you're browsing apps. I think that should be collapsible to free up real estate.

And I really hate the 15 minute thing. That's just not enough time to evaluate some apps.

Agreed- it will actually PROMOTE piracy. If I were a dev, I still wouldn't like it.

24 hours was a big advantage over iPhone. 15 minutes is too short - install an app, phone rings, and it's too late. Why not a few hours, or leave it at 24?

I agree. I think a lot of people will search for apk's and install those before buying a paid app. If it's a good app hopefully most people will then buy it to support the dev's. To go from 24 hours to 15 minutes is crazy. 10-12 hours would have been a good amount of time, IMO

my market is the same still.. i like the change but 15 minutes is way to short, 1 or 2 hours would have been perfect, 24 was way to long.

I had the old Market this morning. I was having troubles getting the new right updated Voice Search, so wiped data and started over. I was able to get the Voice Search, and also had the new market for some reason. I'm going back to my nandroid backup, however, since I didn't want to redo all my home screens and settings.

Also, 15 minutes is a joke. Need at least a couple of hours. 24 hours was a great selling point for Android, and it was essentially a trial version of an app. Now the market will explode with even more "lite" versions of apps. Ugh.

They are also banking on things like the fact that people usually only buy apps that others are Highly satisfied with, such as Tasker. I read about it and was slowed down by the $5 price tag. I eventually bought it after reading the enormous things you could do with it. Also, a lot of people will download the app and forget to remove it in the 15 minutes which makes money for the Developers as well as Google. I agree that 24 hours was a long time, and that 15 minutes is not long enough. The 10-12 hour window sounds more appealing.

Maybe this is one of the ways Google plans on promoting the better apps that are in the market, since they will be in the carousel. This way it gets people to try out the app, and encourages Developers to make their apps stand out more that a "hidden treasure" like some of the apps that are out now, such as the 8pen keyboard; which takes about 15 minutes to get used to btw, which would have sucked when it was a paid app.

The 15 limit must not have been put in place yet. Purchased Clockr Evolution an hour or two ago and still have the option to refund. In the confirmation email it still states that I have 24 hours.

No shit man. Who ever came up with that rule was a freaking moron. I can see putting it on game apps, but not system apps or general use apps. I have a simple solution for you Google ... only put the 15 min rule on Games. Frigging bone heads.

The 15 minute rule probably won't be in place for little while. And as others have said before me, I think if anything, this 15 minute rule will turn more to piracy to test stuff out before purchasing stuff. Sorry, in this type of economy in the US, no one is just going to shell out dough for something without testing it extensively to ensure it is the best for them.

Lesson to self: Careful what you ask for. This new one sucks- yeah the header is way too huge, and it seems like the same old Market with a mask on.

I've heard the 15 minute rule was to stop people from buying games, beating them in 24 hours and then getting refunds for them. That I can understand, but I think the window should've been shortened to like 3-4 hours. I think in 3-4 hours you're not going to beat most games and you still have time to test the app to see if it works or not. 15 mins is just not long at all unless the app is a remarkably buggy POS.

Or have a different time limit for games than for apps.

i think the developer should be able to decide how long, with a 15 minute minimum enforced. "try it free for 3 days" type stuff could be attractive to some users and the developers could have all the control within reason.

Should be at least a 1 hour minimum, this is just going to promote more piracy. If a game is not fun after an hour then people should prob get their money back anyways lol.

The new Market looks nice but not sure it improves the experience. IMO. The scrolling apps at the top is a good idea, but I always go to apps I don't want to click.

15 minutes for a refund is crazy; little to no chance to check out an app for bugs or other issues (i.e. you just honestly don't like it). But, if it protects developers I'm fine with it. The devs make Android what it is today.

My wife's Incredible upgraded to the new market yesterday. I downloaded Beautiful Widgets for her, I closed market, then came back and it was the new format. I was impressed at how quickly it updated.

Hmm... still not seeing a market update on mine yet. I keep going into it, but no change. Wonder if I have to get some small app to trigger the update?

I like that idea a lot. Devs who offer a longer refund policy might get more business and it would leave it completely in the hands of the devs.

Personally, I've only purchased one app that I got a refund on and it was actually within the 15 min time period. I purchased a music player that shall remain nameless on recommendations here. It FC'd within seconds of getting it all set up. I played another song or two and it FC'd again. Rebooted the phone, got a few more FC's afterwards and got a refund for the app.

The 15 minute window is BS. I was actually fairly liberal in buying apps because I knew I had enough time to test it out. 15 minutes isn't enough. Nice job Google. Less time == Less purchases. $1 is now my spend ceiling unless I am darn sure it's going to do what I need.

Off to dispute the charge if the dev won't refund on their own. Neat.

Just got mine updated this morning.

After trying to update an app, Market kept shutting down with a "problem". Once I tried later, the NEW market was loaded. Strange way of updating Market.

For those who have not recieved the new market, try this. Clear the Market cache and data, then go back into the Market. This is how I got it to show up on my Incredible, my girlfriend's Droid, and a friend's Evo.
