I have almost nothing to base this statement on... but what if the Incredible might end up being more similar to the Supersonic (size-wise) than to the Desire. Why? Mostly wishful thinking I guess, but also because I don't think the leaks of the Incredible so far are anywhere near what Verizon and HTC would make it look like. I thought I heard somewhere that HTC puts out a bit of false information now and again to keep us all confused. What if the Incredible video we saw was an older proof of concept type phone that was shown off just for fun? Maybe that's why it had only 256mb of RAM? Maybe it explains the styling, which strays quite a bit from the gorgeous phones they are releasing in the near term (i.e. Legend and Desire). Let's face it, the back of the phone might be a bit crazy, but the front is down right bland. It looks like a cheap iphone knock-off.
How could one of largest U.S. service providers put out a new HTC Android superphone that is less than what everyone else (even T-Mobile and Sprint) are offering? Especially when they've pledged to have the best smartphone line up out there? What if the Incredible has the 4.3 Supersonic screen and similar features, which would be much more deserving of its name? At the very least, I just don't think the phone in the video will be what the final product ends up looking like, assuming it ever shows up at VZW.

No kidding. I heard someone say that he had ties to HTC but no way to know if thats true. But youre right, especially considering what he said. To me, it almost looked like he just saw it and picked it up as if he was seeing it for the first time.
You dont even need to keep the smart phone plan to do this. I used my Grandma's new every two since she wasn't using it. Got the eris, activated it on her line (they said i had to) then immediately reactivated her old phone for her, canceling the smartphone plan. So she is stuck with another 2 year contract, but only for her regular $35 plan. The eris was activated under my girlfriends plan, so she added the data package. Signing the contract means u must keep a plan, any plan for 2 years.

yes you can do that.. and keep in mind as well, that you can buy a new phone once per year on verizon at 2 yr price, you just re-up 2 more years each year. You lose the NE2 discount, but you can buy a new phone each year. Some VZ employees dont even know this so I thought I'd re-mention it (in other words you dont need to go on a 1 yr contract to do that, unless you are considering changing carriers)...

Ok, I thought you would need it at the time of switch but didn't know how they handled a switch like that after the switch was made.
Just to be sure because I might be doing the same thing in July, did you have to cancel the smartphone plan on your grandma's line on your own or did simply activating a dumbphone on her line cancel it? Also did you do this online or in the store/over the phone? Thanks.
Re-activating the old dumb phone removed the $30 data plan from her account.
Since verizon allows you to change your plan at any time, the only requirement is that you keep your line active.
Well yeah business is business. To me its more about reality. "Best Smartphones". That can be relative. But quite frankly unless you want an iphone you can go into a Verizon store and find a smartphone you'll be happy with. Android 2.0, Funner version of android, Web OS, BlackBerry, Iphone wannabe blackberry, Windows Mobile, Verizon has them all. Maybe I'm wrong but no other US carrier has all that. So to me they meet their talk in have tops or near the top in every major smartphone OS. But to me its unrealistic to expect one carrier to always have the best smartphone in a given field. Tmobile will take the Android crown for a little bit most likely, Verizon will be second. That will most likely change in the future.
Also I dont know if you have checked recently but you dont have to get a 2 year contract with Verizon anymore. I have a 1 year contract on my Droid (adding a whopping $30 to the phone price) and you can get any smartphone on a month to month pay cycle (of course you pay full price for the phone).
Also aren't most UK or European carriers government subsidized? I mean if you want to pay more taxes so be it. To me we're subsidizing enough.

That's not so small. It's 4 months of a data plan. That being said, yeah, I like the idea of one year deals and I may entertain such a thing when something arrives worthwhile, though I'm not sure the Nexus One will have the same options that a Verizon sold device does. We shall see.
Edit: Forgot about the Palm offerings added at the end of January, and though they matter little if at all to me, they do provide more choices.

man i couldnt agree with that more. while some of the phones may have been 'cutting edge' when they came out after using them i quickly realized they were complete crap (ie storm1/storm2)

TMo has been on the cutting edge of phones for awhile now and it actually drove me to them at one time. I couldn't wait for my 2 years to be over because the coverage was horrible. My work blackberry is still with them and I use my personal phone most of the time.

Not looking for the next best thing. I never was. Just want a touchscreen only phone with a 3.7" or larger display. Going with the Droid or Eris would compromise my fundamental requirements one way or another and I'm not willing to commit 20 or even 10 months to either phone. I agree. That's what I'm looking for too. I just think that the majority of Verizon's customers don't really care that much and if I didn't know any better I might not either. I'm not trying to make excuses for Verizon. I'm currently not even a customer but I hope to be soon.
And I agree that their line-up is incomplete. But the N1 hasn't been out that long. And even though TMo is supposed to get a new one and there are release dates of the desire in europe now, I don't fault Verizon for keeping quiet. I don't blame them for not showing their cards to their competitors. Besides, they could come out tomorrow and say they are going to release the Incredible next week and it is sexier and has better specs than the desire. Ok back to reality. That was just a little wishful thinking. My point is I just try not to get worked up over it.

I wasn't really referring to people on this board. But if you absolutely had to get a phone right now you would hate yourself for having a Droid or Eris? Outside of that the average person that Verizon cares about would be happy with the selection. Also by the end of next month the number of Android phones on Verizon will grow by 2 (Devour, N1). Add another month and it might jumped to 4 (Incredible, Vphone).

I know because my Droid cost me $229.99 on the one year plan (course had my cat not bricked my computer I might have been able to go month to month paying full price). I agree. The vast majority of the 90 million don't care. I probably wouldn't hate myself if I got either the Droid or Eris right now, but I would when the N1 or Incredible comes out. They (Droid/Eris) are fine phones, just not quite what I'm looking for and I'm thinking about saving myself money by going 20 months on contract. Therefore, I don't want to make any concessions. I hope you're right about both the N1 coming in March (still just a rumor) or the Incredible coming shortly after in April (we really have no idea here). I'm growing weary of waiting.
You're right about the Droid being only $30 more. I was using the regular website prices but once I logged in, it's $230 with my corporate discount. Still, I would lose out on the NE2 which is $50 thrown away for me.

Perhaps I'm a bit confused but I think I agree with what you're saying. Just at first glance, and without looking at screen size or specs, I would say the Supersonic and Incredible look similar.
Another thing that occurs to me is that we see the Nexus One available for TMobile and then about 6 weeks later hear about the release of the Desire. IF....the time line were to be similar for Verizon then we would see the Nexus One available for Verizon customers in the spring and then around June (as suggested on a web site that slips my mind but I think it's something like pda.net?) we will see the "Incredible". I agree that the styling looks a lot like the iphone. I could be happy since in the very beginning I was looking for an iphone on Verizon. Now I see the Desire and salivate as it's a much better looking phone. I think I will probably end up with a Nexus One...but will wait a few weeks after it is released on Verizon to listen to all the gripes and see if anymore news is released. Ideally having a smartphone by summer would be nice for travel.
Oh and as far as calling peoples motives into question. Here's what I think is more typical than some might think. I held off waiting for awhile and was sure I wanted a Droid. I went into the store with my wife. We both held the Droid in our hands for a good 15 to 20 minutes and just did not like the form factor at all. We were not pleased enough to lock into a two year agreement and get stuck with that particular phone. The Eris would have probably made a better choice for us but still a big let down since we were really wanting something more along the iphone realm as far as screen size and power. At the time this all happened the rumors were already flying about the Passion/Desire/Dragon...which ended up being the Nexus One/Bravo/Desire/Incredible blah blah blah. People like myself want to see a powerful smartphone with a good sized screen come to Verizon since that's the network we want to use. I currently have a very dumb phone but am willing to wait or take my business elsewhere. This is why it is so frustrating to watch all the other carriers get these types of phones first. Why is this so hard for some people to understand?

No the Nexus one and Desire are 2 different phones.
I think we will get news in the CTIA about phones coming to Verizon. I understand they are looking to get the best out of the droid and eris but with these other phones coming out for Tmo and at&t, Verizon has nothing to compete with these. So i think something will be coming early April. I say this because when I went and talked to an employee of Verizon they said they find out about new phones a week before they get them....
So i think it will be announced and within a week or 2 we will see a new phone for Verizon, that's what I think anyways
I do think maybe the Incredible is Verizon's Desire

Even though this is an Incredible forum, I suppose the Desire and N1 have been brought up enough to answer. I think the Nexus One for Verizon will look just like the Nexus One on TMo. I dont think they will change its current set up nor do I think they will use a different phone and call it the Nexus One. One thing I have heard said, which seems logical, is that the Incredible will Verizon's version of the Desire. So Verizon wont specifically get the Desire, but theyll have the Incredible.

I have lately been finding it very interesting that both the Nexus One and the Desire are HD video ready, but it's just not enabled and will be enabled through a software update later. That's what the news said. Why not have HD video capabilities right from the start? If it's just a software thing and all they'd have to do is just enable it, then why not enable it and have the phone be able to take 720p video from the get-go?
I think the answer is the Incredible. I think there was some sort of agreement between HTC and Verizon that the HTC Incredible would be the first phone to have HD video recording enabled. Sure, the Nexus and Desire will get it enabled later on after the Incredible has been out for a few months, but I honestly believe that is what's going on. Because why else would a phone like the Desire be released by HTC and it is completely capable of recording in HD but they just didn't enable it? It doesn't make sense, unless you figure Verizon and the Incredible into the equation. Notice that the Incredible has the bigger, higher quality "looking" lens and it has DUAL LED flashes.
I'm tellin ya, Verizon has something big planned for the Incredible. I've seriously been laying in bed trying to get to sleep imagining the possible commercials and marketing campaigns for the Incredible. All it needs is a few higher end specs to make it "incredible" in the public's view. Compare it to the iPhone, for example: Bigger screen, dual LED flash, AMOLED screen, 720p HD video, google maps with navigation/gps built-in and free Skype, POSSIBLY a front facing camera (which would make Skype AMAZING for this phone), 1ghz processor, etc. The list can go on for a while how this phone would be superior to the iPhone and many other phones.
So, with that said. I truly believe that Verizon is going to make the Incredible their new flagship and I can just imagine the massive advertising campaign behind this phone. I honestly believe this phone will have some specs that set it totally apart from any phone on the market, including the N1 and the Desire. I'm getting pretty excited to see it and I have a feeling we'll all be very happy with what we find out this phone can do. Verizon just isn't going to put out a phone, call it the "Incredible" and have it be just on par with every other phone out right now. They're not stupid. At least not yet. haha The more and more I've thought about it, the more I think Verizon is really putting all of their resources into this phone. I think it will have every bell and whistle imaginable and the only thing that some people wish it will have come out with is a 4.3" screen instead of a 3.7" screen. Then they release a 4.3" phone in the third or fourth quarter and everyone gets what they want. That's the way I see it unfolding currently, but that's just my theory and personal opinion.

I think when people say they hope the Incredible is the Verizon version of the Desire they're not talking about a Desire rebranded. They (mostly) mean they hope the incredible will be spec'd the same as the Desire (hence no need to move the camera). While I'm hoping for this I don't think it will happen, but who knows.
I for one happen to like the look of the Incredible (esp the back) compared to the Desire.
So, with that said. I truly believe that Verizon is going to make the Incredible their new flagship and I can just imagine the massive advertising campaign behind this phone.
That brings up an interesting point. The Droid is the flagship rigt now and Verizon put a massive amount of money into the campaign. What if that was a deal with Motorola for a pre-determined time? If Motorola and Verizon had something like a 6 month agreement going, that puts the Incredible release sometime in early May.
I wouldn't say that there is an agreement not to have 720p recording on the Desire and Nexus just because of one VZW phone. That just isn't how marketing works. You don't disable something for other networks. It's not like HTC went to T-Mo and Google and say, "I'm sorry, we can't have 720p video recording on this device because we are saving that for your rival network Verizon to have on their new phone coming out." I wish it was that way, but I wouldn't agree. The Incredible probably will have this feature though -- I saw the lens.

I wouldn't say that there is an agreement not to have 720p recording on the Desire and Nexus just because of one VZW phone. That just isn't how marketing works. You don't disable something for other networks. It's not like HTC went to T-Mo and Google and say, "I'm sorry, we can't have 720p video recording on this device because we are saving that for your rival network Verizon to have on their new phone coming out." I wish it was that way, but I wouldn't agree. The Incredible probably will have this feature though -- I saw the lens.

There are exclusive agreements with phones. I don't know that I have ever seen exclusivity of individual features on phones before. I could see that happening though.
I think it's more likely that the software required to handle 720p just isn't quite ready for primetime yet.

Yes. There are exclusive deals with phones...in fact, networks make a point of saying that their special new phone is exclusive. Software for 720p isn't probably as smooth as they want it to be; and therefore, it has not been released. It's not a matter of switching it on and off. But, the Incredible looks extremely promising and I'm also pretty confident that they will change the look.
Nash makes some good points, but I hope what we have seen with the leaks does have at least the 3.7" screen and 500+MB RAM. I can't imagine Verizon putting out a flagship phone with "less than" specs.

Yeah, it would REALLY look great if the site hadn't changed from letting us have 150x150 pixel avatars, to now letting us only have 80x80. That's just way too small in my opinion. Thanks for the compliment though. Here's what it would look like full size.
I'd bet the reason the phones don't have 720p could possible be the HTC drivers aren't finished for it, or android doesn't currently support it. I doubt any deal Verizon would have with HTC would include any european phones.
Software development isn't just drawing something on a white board and snapping your fingers (that's what management thinks) especially when it is software for mobile devices. There be dragons there.
It has been suggested above that the desire will be Verizon's N1. I can't see this being true because Google would see no benefit from this, and I can't imagine that Google has anything invested in HTC's Desire. I wish it was possible, but I just don't see it happening.
As for specs and 720p: would shooting HD video using 256MB RAM be painfully choppy? In the end, if it's possible to run android and HD video using relatively little memory, I feel that it would definitely be something Verizon would pull. After all, how many consumers actually look at the specs of a phone. At the absolute most, I would say the average consumer might look at the processor speed. It's been said before, but a dealbreaker for us is something the average consumer probably doesn't even pay attention to.
I'm amazed at how optimistic most of you are! I for one assumed we wouldn't hear anything at MWC, and I'm very doubtful that we'll see anything in stores until early summer. Maybe some news will emerge at CTIA, but I can envision a distant release date being announced. Sorry, just how I am...
That brings up an interesting point. The Droid is the flagship rigt now and Verizon put a massive amount of money into the campaign. What if that was a deal with Motorola for a pre-determined time? If Motorola and Verizon had something like a 6 month agreement going, that puts the Incredible release sometime in early May.
They most likely did have an agreement to promote the Droid over other phones for a certain length of time. But that time has come and gone most likely. The more time that passes the more I'm convinced something happened that messed up Verizon's plan and I'm starting to think that what happened was that they got screwed by Google. Go back to their partnership announcement. This was in the press release "Integral to this agreement is a commitment by the companies to devote substantial resources to accelerate delivery of leading-edge innovation that will put unique applications in the hands of consumers quickly. The two industry leaders will create, market and distribute products and services, with Verizon Wireless also contributing the breadth of its nationwide distribution channels. Consumers will be able to purchase products resulting from the collaboration in Verizon Wireless retail and online stores.". Now the first act after the partnership was the Droid launch (though Google only really having to do with the Droid and not much with the Eris). But what was the second act? Google decides to sell the best Android phone, the Nexus One, online from Google only. Yes it will come to Verizon later. But I find it hard to believe Verizon went into this thinking "We'll have the best Android phone for 2 months, then Google will sell the best phone all by themselves and then we'll launch 2 not quite top of the line phones while another top of the line phone from HTC comes out to other carriers first" and thought it was a good deal. I just haven't seen much come from this partnership and I don't think its because of Verizon.

All internal specs of the HTC Incredible are strictly speculation and rumor at this point. There has been no confirmation. Every time you hear RAM mentioned in an article referring to the Incredible it says RAM "is said to be" 256. "Said to be" is completely different than RAM is "officially confirmed" to be... Right now all of the specs are just guesses and hearsay, except for what we know from pictures and video of the phone which are the obvious cosmetic features of the phone and some software stuff that is evident in the video and pictures.
Personally, I think there is NO WAY this phone would release with less than 512 megs of RAM on board.
