Look, I don't hate the backplate as much as some of you others, but the plastic doesnt seem to fit the sleek fit of the rest of the phone. But like others have suggested, this might just be the beta form of the final. Do you think it will change? Do you care?

i dont mind the red at all. i wouldn't mind my phone sticking out from all the other plain black phones. additional colored backplates would be pretty sweet, though, and would attract a wider range of customers.
It might change, I really don't care either way. I've been waiting forever for a phone like this, I'd get it no matter what the back looks like.
ya same to me whats more important is 2.1 android w/ sense you on VZW. I don't mind the color, but to me it just seems that the back is plastic, which I find bizarre on ANY phone these days, especially one of this tier. I can see them releasing different colored faceplates though, a good idea for custimization. Jw, you guys think that hole at the bottom is a optical trackball or mic?

I hope it changes, and I agree that it just doesn't fit right. But seriously, I HOPE it changes, or that thing is going to live in a holster. Still love the specs on it. I'm quite stoked.

I like the way the speaker grill is aimed toward the top of the phone. It may increase speaker volume and make speaker phone calls louder by not having a speaker flat on the back of the phone. I always have to cup my hand behind the phone to reflect the sound back to the front.
The color doesn't bother me as much as the overwrought curves. In any case it won't stop me from getting one, and I'm sure there will be aftermarket replacements available.
So no one for the idea it might house a bigger battery?
Hmm...you know me, I'm a sucker for a good discussion. I'll bite.
Yeah, it is kinda interesting that this thing has such a weird looking back. What if this thing has an AMAZING battery life? Would that be worth the weird looking back? I would have to say YES, for sure it would.
This thing is called the HTC Incredible. There are some specs hiding that we don't know about yet, I hope, and when they're all revealed this phone may be MUCH more than we are currently thinking it is. That's just a possibility though. I'm probably wrong.

Of course there can't be a thickness shot could there? I'm just guessing battery because the 2nd step of texture covers most of the back and seems to add some thickness to it.
Okay now that I am looking at the HTC supersonic pictures (they truly resemble each other), it seems the white coating under the brownish red case on the incredible looks similar to the back of the supersonic (Leak Roundup: HTC Supersonic for Sprint, a WiMax-fueled Android beast). Maybe the red case is just a cover on the back?

Yeah, man, I SERIOUSLY think that you're onto something here. That totally makes sense now. It may not be correct, but why else would they stagger that back like that? It's a bigger battery, which COULD be for things that are battery intensive, such as...shooting 720p video. Trust me, shooting 720p video drains a batter QUICK! I have a Panasonic Lumix ZS3 camera, and when I'm shooting HD video it drains the battery so fast.
Regardless though, I think you're onto something. That looks like where the battery would go and it's obviously bigger and well...yeah...I happen to think you very well may be right.

I doubt it. Look at how Flush the camera is to the back. Take off that red "covering" and its going to stick out with the lights. if it was just a cover they should be more recessed.

ahhh your right, but it was worth the concept. As i'm reading other people's posts, the whole battery concept seems good to me. I had so much hope that there would be a HTC commerical on the superbowl... no luck.

Yes but if you plan on putting that big of a battery in it you might as well use that extra space for say a better lens...
After sleeping on it, I feel pretty confident this back plate is a development version only. I'm not a huge phone nerd, but hasn't everybody pretty much moved to soft touch/muted colors nowadays? I would be willing to be that the production version will retain the ridges (perhaps toned down a little), but the brown/red/whatever will go away and be replaced by something less loud.
I'd love to see the back smoothly radiused without the steps... Kind of iPhone-y, but it's a good look.

One would hope. But I get the feeling the Incredible wont be living up to its name compared to the N1. I don't think there is going to be an overly grand camera in the incredible. I don't see 8 megapixel so 5 most likely.
Would it be far fetched to say that this backplate is equivilant to the disguise and masking that a soon to be released car gets while it's being test driven on public roads?
Im not sure if they will allow different back colors, being the phone is supposed to coincide with the Incredibles movie whose main color is red. But i could i be so completely red. Im excited about the phone but i wish the phone was more sleek like the bravo and the N1, with the soft touch. I was so excited about that. This doesnt look as high-end as those phones. But i guess the features and a cool case will work to win me completely over.

I noticed that the little android guy is on the back cover...therefore...this is probably an early prototype of the back....BUT the nexus one prototypes had the guy on the back as well with the 'flag' and that back is the same as the one on the retail N1s now...
Part of me wants to think that the back we've seen is not the retail back...but I think it is going to stay and we will either be seeing tons of angry consumers ready to spray paint the back a different color or interchangeable backplates.
The other part of me thinks that the back will change because, like many of you have said, it is missing VZW and/or Google logo(s).
The third part of me, hopes that the weird shape houses a larger battery and allows for a flush camera mount.
Included: cropped pictures of the android guy on the backplate and the thinness of the device (which looks pretty damn thin)

To tell the truth I don't mind the back to much. I agree with some of the other posts that the might come out with replacement covers, either way it is more than likely my next phone. The molded back might actually help in terms of grip. Just give us a release date. I feel like we have been tracking this phone or its counterparts forever.

I just had a thought with the new FCC filing for a HTC phone with a 1300mh battery is the incredible? Just think they have that battery and a normal cover less bold, and then have a larger battery cover the red one we have been seeing with a larger battery for if you want to be doing HD video capturing? Again just a thought

Now there's an idea... If that happens, I'll stick with the lo-pro cover and get whatever high-capacity battery Seidio comes out with. Best of both worlds. I like the way you think.

I may be completely off here, and probably am, but I'm guessing that if they're going to use 2 different batteries, both would have to be listed.
This is just going off a different phone that was listed twice because apparently it had 2 different manufacturers for the screen, and both had to be tested. Again, its just a guess.

ya i was kind of thinking the same thing after i posted it im not sure
I think it has that terraced back plate so it wont look as thick as a brick, you know, droid like.
This way even if it is fat from a big battery, at first glance it may appear thinner than it really is, so a consumer doesn't look at it and think this thing is as big as a 2x4 and walk right by.
And maybe they just want to put out something a little different, something to stand out from the field of a thousand phones that all look the same.
Lol it was supposed to say i could be completley wrong...
but idk isnt Verizon doing the movie thang? lol
Or red metallic backplate to coincide with the 'Incredible' Iron Man's movie release in May? Phones have been tied in more loosely in less 'blockbuster'-y movies.
FWIW, I also think the plate is a release-ready product. Polarizing the masses with an uncompromising style is fodder for the accessory market.
I definitly agree about the backplate being interchangeable, I think it would be a great marketing accessory. I am not so sure about the Ironman 2 tie in though. I would think you would see something especially on the Ironman 2 Homepage. Actually it shows LG as a sponser on the site. Check it out
I have a hard time believing this will be the backplate. I like the idea earlier that the white back seen around the lens is like the Supersonic's. Maybe the Incredible will have the same back with a kickstand... The orange/red cover
A. doesn't match Verizon's red.
B. sticks out (color wise way to much)
C. doesn't match the red of the front speaker (in the newest videos on this forum)
What if, that orange backplate is a prototype of an interchangable cover? Maybe HTC is making accessories as well and that is a snap on cover to protect the back. It also does not have any Verizon branding on the phone, which you know the final version will.
As for the curves, maybe that is an interchangable cover and has those weird curves to fit over my theory of the kickstand on the back.
If you look at the N1 the camera sticks out from the back, the phone doesn't lay flat. Even the new desire sticks out some too. Just my thoughts..
