I'm using DVDfab and going with 800x???. I encoded a film that was 1.78:1 and it was 800x450. It looks fantastic but movies at this resolution are going to take up a lot of space. I had encoded a bunch of movies for my Eris at 480x??? and they really do not look too bad on the Incredible. The scaling of the Incredible is actually pretty good. I encoded the same movie at 480x272, 640x360, and 800x450 and spent a fair amount of time comparing them on the Incredible. While 800x450 obviously looks the best 640x360 really is very close (and the files are significantly smaller). I'm fairly picky so I suspect I will encode at 800x???.

Thanks to the kind folks on these boards, I've finally got the hang of converting movies and video for my DInc. But, I've tried several options to convert my newer movies with encryption (including a couple $$ ones claiming to be able to do so) with no luck.
Has anyone had found a way to convert movies like "Up" or "Transformers 2" to MP4 format?
Does anyone know if there is a size limit to playing movies? I have one movie thate over 2gb and doesn't play and was encoded at the same settings as other other movies that work.
Guy's I don't know about this 720x400 resolution. Just about a 1 1/2 hour movie at that res is 1.2 GB while the same movie at a resolution of 480x272 is just under 500MB.
Now I have looked at both on the Incredible and the 720x400 is only slightly (and I mean slightly) noticeably better.
But at that size I don't think it pays.
I have 16 GB SD card, but that will be filled up fast with videos at that higher res.
I would like to put a few of my DVDs from my home collection onto my Incredible. Can anyone offer a free option that will allow me to do this, or will I have to pay for a dvd ripper?

I use DVD Decrypter to rip my DVD and XVid4PSP (under iphone settings) to encode the DVD for my Incredible.
Using Oxelon Media convertor 848x480, 30 FPS, 160 bitrate, sampling rate of 48000, AAC audio codec, H264 Video Codec and mp4 Media fomat.
These are the settings I used on my Moto Droid and the picture was full screen and perfect!!! As far as ripping a bluray and converting it took ( 12 Hours!!! ) and looked no better than standard DVD
Once I convert them using Oxelon Media, then what do I do with all the converted Video_TS files? Doesn't Oxelon then combine them all into 1 movie file?
Thanks Hand 76. I downloaded DVD DeDecrypter and tried to rip The Dark Knight. I put the DVD in my computer and it says parsing IFO files at the bottom of the top window. then after a while, I keep getting Parsing runtime exception errors. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
What will it take for Google/whoever to allow people to just rent movies on this phone? I want to spend my money but they won't let me. They won't take my money to let me rent a movie on the Incredible. Whoever does that will make millions. Please Google/Amazone/Netflix..help me spend my money. Please.

The Dark Knight has copy protection that DVD Decrypter cannot crack. That program hasn't been updated since 2005.

Some DVDs have protection that make it hard, but almost all of them work with DVD Decrypter. I dont think I have ever gotten the error you are getting. I just put the disk in, and usually DVD Decrypter loads up the rest.
Try another DVD first. Maybe see if something a little older works so you get the hang of it.

I have only had 1 or 2 movies ever not work, and those were ones that came with the BluRay copy. Hell even the Avatar DVD (that comes with the BluRay copy) ripped right away.

I downloaded it today and had this same issue with Twilight.

Considering how old DVD Decrypter is, it is amazing that so many movies are cracked so easily. The Dark Knight and Star Trek are the only two movies that I haven't been able to crack out of the 50 + movies I have done.
Ok so I used a different dvd and got it to work. It created a folder on my c drive with the name of the movie. What do I do know? I know I need to convert the file. Can someone help me?
I have tried luk luk and mixzing and have performed the rip at various settings including 800x480 and I can't seem to get a full screen going. I'm somewhat inexperienced at video and especially mobile video. I used AVS4you to rip a 800Mb .avi file into a MP4 file and it works... but there is so much horizontal screen left and I cannot find any "full screen" option or setting on the player.
How many passes, at what res, and how many fps? I wish my computer was that fast...
800x400 1500bit fps to auto. i ripped avatar on this and boy its looks amazing on this screen so crisp and clear. friends of mine wounder if it was a hd screen. it took me the last time i belive was about 1hr or 1hr 30min to rip not sure if my settins are right. every time i do 1pass the audio and video is out of wack
20 minutes? How many passes, at what res, and how many fps? I have a fast computer (with 4 cores) and I'm not even close to 20 minutes at 800x448.
to see, i did fellowship of the ring, 2 hours 58min, formatted as an mp4
handbrake 64 on osx 10.6.3
video codec h.264
framerate same as source
average bitrate set to 1500
2 pass encoding with turbo first pass
i tried the 480x272 with the first two matrix movies and it looks pretty good and doesn't take up too much space.
480x272 really does not look too bad. I encoded 40+ movies at this res for my Eris and they are definitely watchable on the Incredible (and they take up a 3rd of the space). Once I compare them to same movie at 800x450 though the differences are fairly obvious. The 800x450 movies are much more crisp and there are no artifacts. I just don't know if it is worth encoding a bunch of movies again when they take up so much more space...

Is anyone getting the movie to play in full screen?
What player?
What ripper?
What resolution/rip setting?
Thanks in advance!
The stock video player in "Photos" app will play movies full screen. It crops both sides to do this. In the app you choose full screen or true aspect ratio by pressing an icon. It is pretty obvious it is zoomed on wide aspect movies (2.35:1). They look a bit blurry.
Just one more question guys. My encoder sometimes automatically sets some dvds to encode at (or around) 29fps and others at 24fps and they all end up looking fine.
But to save on space can I lower all the movies to 24fps and still get the same picture quality? Or will some not look right like that?
I have done about 10 movies in the past couple weeks. I am using a core 2 duo and running it at 1 pass. You are suppose to have better results with 2 pass but every time I use 2 pass it has some sort of defect, usually the sound is a few 10ths of a second off.
I have been using dvdFab and AnyDVD converter. I paid about $45 bucks for Anydvd converter and I am using the free trial for dvdfab. I think dvdfab does a better job but they really both turn out good for a little phone screen. You can't get too hung up on the resolution but you do need to make sure you keep the resolution proportionate. The setting for the resolution depend on how the movie was originally filmed. Movies filmed at the 16:9 aspect ratio fill the screen if you use a proportionate resolution such as 800x480 or 480x272. The phone will enlarge the picture till one of the dimensions is maxamized. 16/9=1.7777 and 480/272=1.76 Most programs will give you the option to keep the resolution proportionate. Letterbox films are 4:3 or 4/3=1.333 so you will get bars at the top and bottom. You can change the film resolution which is actually changing the aspect ratio but it will distort the film. Imagine taking a movie that you are watching on your high def tv screen that has top and bottom bars and squishing it and stretching it so it takes up the entire screen. It will be bigger but it will be distorted. The other option is to cut the left and right sides off called cropping the video so that you can enlarge it without distorting the video. This will maintain the picture but cause you to lose some of the action on the left and right. I prefer to not crop letterbox films and and keep the proportionate aspect ratio.
As far as ripping goes, dvdfab has a free ripper that has been able to rip every new video that I have tried without a problem.
To set the encoded output size of the video, you will need to adjust the video bitrate. Dvdfab and Anydvd converter will allow you to set the video bitrate but DvdFab calculates the apx output video size. The higher the video bitrate, the larger the file and the higher the quality. I think 500 mb mp4 videos look fine on a tiny phone screen. I have been setting the output so that the video is 800 mb to 1 gb. The longer the movie the larger you may want the output. Heavy action movies that portray a lot of movement will look better if you use a higher video bitrate.
A quick rundown on DvdFab..
I have had good results using the following settings. You can use the dvd to mobile option or you can use the dvd to dvd option. The dvd to mobile will rip and encode the video to an mp4 format and the dvd to dvd option will rip the dvd to your hard disk in a vob format. I have had good luck using VLC media player to preview the vob files to ensure they are good. VLC is a free player that you should be able to find using google. VLC media player will also be able to give you detailed information about the ripped movie. I prefer to do it this way so I can watch the movie on my computer in full size. (not dimensional size but file size, think 5-8 gig.) Then I use the file to dvd option to encode the ripped vob into a mp4 video to watch on my DI.
The settings at this point are slightly critical. But I would imagine that there are several different setting that will still render a good looking movie. In DVDFab you can select the video source file and it will find and open the VOB files. It should automatically open all of the VOB files and checkmark them. You can set the output file to whatever you want on your hard drive. I am using the Apple TV settings under file to mobile at this point. You should have already ripped the dvd to your hard disk. The ripping part takes about 15 to 20 minutes. I use the setting dvd9 which does not condense the movie.
Once the VOB files load into DVDFab then you can click on edit. Below video format h264 you can adjust the video bitrate or the output file size. I usually adjust the video bitrate so that the file size is at an acceptable amount. You can also change the framerate. The dvdFab guide where I found this information suggested changing it to 25fps but our phone is capable of the preset fps and I think I read that adjusting the framerate increases the amount of encoding therefore decreases the quality. So I just leave that as it is preset. Then click on ok and start. Because you have chosen apple tv it will automatically pre select the closest resolution or aspect ratio. If the video was filmed at 16:9 then it should mostly fill the screen. If not then you would need to make further adjustments but I would suggest trying it like this till you get the hang of it. Then if you like the results, play around with cropping. I can give further instructions on cropping if anyone cares.
Please give this a try and let me know the results. Remember dvdFab is free to try and they let you use the entire program for about 15 days and they don't limit or restrict it.
One last thing...
All the movies I copy to my computer or my phone are movies I already own. I have purchased the DVD's at blockbuster or Amazon.com and back them up to mp4's so I can watch them on my phone while I'm traveling.

Invested in AnyDVD and the full suite of Slysoft products, CloneCD, Clone2DVD, Clone2DVDMobile etc... It takes longer but I have moved over 3 movies so far with spectacular results. Each is about 1.5gb in size.
Avatar was full screen, 2012 was not, letterbox format but that was the source. did a kid movie for the kids.
We make backup copies of all our purchased DVD's, strip out the extra crap and use those to play on the bigscreen. Keep the originals in the original boxes on a shelf. Break, damage a DVD, just burn a new one. A lot of them are played as ISO's using a media player that fetches them from my main workstation's NAS.
