so i got my Evo 3D earlier today and its been charging since about noon. ( killed the battery by running it through ALOT of tasks). the phone hit the 99% mark at about 4:30pm its now 5:26 and the phone is still at 99% and the RED LED light is still light in the ear speaker grill.. a restart, battery pull and disconnect and reconnect wont change the percentage nor the LED indicator light..anyone else having this issue? i assume a green LED light would appear once its fully charged...upon feeling the charger its no longer warm like it was while the phone was charging ( BTW this sucker gets WARM while using and especially while charging)
Update.
A check of the battery status in settings show full bars all green bars..still no 100% and still red LED light..
Update 2
It finally reached 100% at 6pm, and red light became green..
Guess it took a while since it was first charge cycle...

I have a Battery Widget that tells you percentage. I have tried several and they all do the same thing. It just keeps charging.
Did you get that via HTC widgets, or is it via Android Market? I'd like one as well, I was looking all over to find battery % and couldn't find it on my phone. Thanks!

I like "Quick Battery" (from the market). Nice, lean widget.

In the Market. It is called Battery Widget and it is by Elvison. It is a clone of the one HTC has for some phones but for some reason it isn't available for the 3vo.

Update
The battery finally hit the 100% mark at 6PM. Red LED light turned into a Green one too..guess the phone for whatever reason takes light years to make that final 1% charge to 100...either way i'm sure this issue will diminish as our phone batteries get broken in with a few charges..could be due to this being the first initial charge cycle..

Thanks jdsingle! I always had a vague notion that something like this was going on, but I never knew exactly what. This article is beautifully written and really enlightening!

You can also the the charge percentage (only while charging though) if you go to the clock app. I use battery indicator pro and it always reads the same as what the phone itself says
There is one more trick that's even leaner, BTW. In the past, I've used "Any Cut" to create a desktop link directly to the "Battery Info" activity. It works whether you're plugged in or discharging. (Incidentally, I also like to use Any Cut link to the "check for updates" activity if I'm expecting an update and checking for it over and over again).

mine had similar issues. stayed on 99 forever, then hit 100 but never said charged, just 100. not sure if its supposed to but my hero wud swich to charged when the 100 was full. anyways kept it on the charger and the battery continually went down!! 97, 96. i did several resets it went back to 99, i finally just took it off charge at 99... weird :/

Funny..mine just did the same thing this morning. As I woke up, I looked at my phone and the green LeD light was on, but the battery level was 98% while on the charger overnight!!

Check out my previous post. It will clarify a lot about battery issues for you.
You should read this. Your battery gauge is lying to you (and it's not such a bad thing)
Can anyone confirm whether or not our new 3D is being charges a full 100% unlike th original EVO which would show a 100% that would drop to 90% as soon as you took it off the charger? Thanks as this was most bizarre and annoying thing about or beloved 4gs.

I think it does... however my wife and I both have the problem where our 3vos charge to 99% and then take about 40 mins more charging before the charging light turns green/100%
Seems like it charges to about 98%, that's what it did for me this morning after being on the charger all night. But when I took it off the charger, it stayed there and didn't drop immediately. So it seems as if it shows the actual percentage charge rather than a 'fake' 100% charge.
I have the same problem. Green light showing 95 to 99. I am glad that I wasn't the only person with the same issue? Or non issue? Regardless, I really do like this phone. Didn't the iphone 4 have a similar issue and an update fixed that? or was that the signal bar?

The iPhone 4 had an update which changed the mapping from signal-strength-value to number-of-bars (just aesthetic), but I don't remember a battery-related update.
Yeah, sounds like the battery thing is a non-issue. From what the XDA link jdsingle posted (above a few posts), it's bad for a Li-ion battery to sit at exactly 100%, so almost all modern chargers will let it get to 100% but then it will naturally drop a few percent. Some battery indicators lie to you and say 100% when it's not actually true; some indicators are honest and will say 95%. Or maybe it's just still calibrating itself. You can bump charge it (i.e. unplug the phone from the charger and plug it right back in, preferably while the phone is off) to get to a true 100%, but doing it too much isn't great for the battery. Maybe do it once to calibrate your charger/battery to figure out what "full" really is, but not often.
(This is what I gathered from reading that thread, at least; I'm not a materials scientist or expert by any other means.)
I recommend to just charge the phone and use it, and not worry about the actual percentage. Who knows, maybe this resolves itself after a little bit of use. Or not. Either way, it's not a big deal.

It seems to me that it charges to 99% and then slowly, very slowly, trickle charges over a few hours the last percent. At least I hope so, this would be pretty great.
I didn't know about checking the percentage until I read this thread. So I can't say for sure that it was at "100%" but earlier I charged my battery to full in a matter of a couple or three hours. The first time I charged it seemed to fill all the way up but wouldn't show the green light but the second time it did.
As a side note I've only charged the battery twice so far, I've been getting great battery life albeit with only light usage.
Are there any apps out there that show the rate of charge/discharge (pretty much like an ammeter)? I used to have something like that on my old Palm that would show on a line graph current draw from the batter or charger in real time.

CurrentWidget does this. Shows draw on current during phone use as well as charging, or a hybrid of both.
I couldn't get it working last night on my Evo 3D. It was definitely working on my Evo 4G. Was going to ask if anyone else had more luck. It was reading 0mA for me. I think the app is known to be finicky with certain hardware.

I did discover curentwidget after I posted. Seems to be exactly what I'm looking for but it's not much help if it doesn't work. Is that the only app that does that? I haven't tried it yet..

is anyones charger loose? the chargers not loose as far as falling out, but it wiggles back and forth from left to right. im wondering if i shud return

I had the same thing this am, it said 99% and the light was green. I rebooted by phone and after it went green again it said 100% this time.
I really like Battery Widget by Elvison, it shows up in your status bar on top (next to Weatherbug temperature) and you don't have to have the widget on your home screen anywhere, it just adds an indicator to your status bar to show you % charged.
It allows me to monitor % charge while freeing up real estate on my homescreen for other widgets / apps, as opposed to being stuck to only one page of your homescreen.
It seems to me that it charges to 99% and then slowly, very slowly, trickle charges over a few hours the last percent. At least I hope so, this would be pretty great.
I think you're right. Sounds like HTC has found a way for you to pull the phone off the charger at 99% instead of 92-100%. I think this was more of a way to get around the EVO 4G complaints as opposed to the same issue as the EVO 4G. I hope you're right.
I know there is a similar post to this regarding the battery taking a long time to go above 99%, but I have a different charging related problem. My phone's status light turns green and it stops charging at around 95-97%. I'm wondering if others have this problem or if I should exchange the device at best buy for another.
It's not a problem, and it's the same thing as the other topic. It's just a false battery reading. Leave it charged for an hour or two and it eventually goes to 100%.

To better your chances of gettin gto 100% sooner, ensure you use a 110V charger and not your USB cable and a USB Port from your computer, which charges at roughly twice the amount of time as the 110V outlet charger does.

This happens when charging overnight ... It never reaches 100%.

Once at 100% the phone will start to run off the battery, not the charger, while plugged in. Whether we like it or not, the light stays green when that's happening.
Not saying that you didn't, just saying one does need to monitor carefully to arrive at the right conclusion.

Is this a glitch or is it done intentionally to preserve the battery? Maybe I'm giving HTC too much credit in asking this.

It's done very intentionally.
Primary reason is that to do it another way allows trickle charging or over charging. That was the cause of some of the famous flaming battery cases you may recall about a decade ago.
That it may be easier on the battery is likely a secondary benefit.
This is the same scheme employed by laptops and for the same reason - safety. (My laptop has a charging LED on the charger connector - it often shows green while the laptop shows 97%.)
The same confusion causes users to prematurely replace laptop batteries.

Battery widget by geekyouup ... also the lock screen display the charge state while charging.
While Battery Widget is a very nice looking widget (I used it on my DX and 3vo for a while), it only tells you current charge level. Try Battery Monitor Widget. It'll show you a chart of your charge/discharge usage. As you charge overnight, your phone hits 100% or 99%, shuts off charge for 5%, charges back to 100%, repeats. It's as EarlyMon mentions, as a safety feature. Also it preserves battery longevity.

So far as I recall, you can plug the phone in, watch the charging light, unplug the instant it's green and you'll see it at 100% (maybe 99% or like that if the charging circuit is still settling in and calibrating).
I believe it charges it to 100% and then stops charging. What happens is it detects that it has gone down a percentage point or two and then charges it up to 100% again.
If you happen to catch it while it is doing that, you will see it drop down a bit immediately. This is the phenomenon I noticed with my Sprint HTC Hero at least.
Sprint continues their EVO line of Android Phones with what is certainly a first for them - a 3D phone. The HTC EVO 3D boasts 3D technology on a beautiful 4.3-inch screen and get this: you don't even need glasses to enjoy the 3D experience!
