Anybody else having lots of random reboots? Mine happens when I'm doing stuff and when it's just in my pocket. No consitantcy at all.
Yep, the phone has rebooted several times or crashed in the past two days since getting it, with no obvious reason why. Had to pull the battery at least four times. Most annoying is to discover upon reboot that the apps stored on the SD card that had icons on the desktop need to have their icons recopied to the desktop to replace the annoying Android icon placeholders. At least the apps themselves still work, but I've already had to recreate my desktop screens (which are quite full) twice. Not fun, not even a little bit. No, I have not installed any additional task killer apps.

I've been having a lot of random reboots. Sometimes 3-4 an hour or more. Most of the time it just happens when the phone is asleep in my pocket or on the table. Other times while I'm using an app it will either hang or the screen will blank and the buttons will light up until it finally restarts itself or I do a battery pull.
Working last night and again today, I may have noticed one factor that's contributing to mine. When I'm at home, I've usually got the wireless on because I don't get the best signal at home and spend a lot of time on the web. At work, however, I don't have wireless access and am (supposedly) doing my job. Thus, at work I turn off the wireless. In about 10 hours at work last night/today, it hasn't rebooted once. Within a half hour of being home with the wireless turned on, it started rebooting again. Anyone else noticed the rebooting tied to wireless? Anyone have any thoughts about a fix? Or is this something that would likely warrant taking the phone in and trying to get it replaced?

I had one reboot. I think I was opening the browser or something like that. I also had to reboot once because the phone or app launcher wouldn't do anything at all
kinda buggy
My girlfriends EVO 3D has re-booted 5 or 6 times already today. And she just got hers today around noon. She had to pull the battery the last time it did it because it completely froze up on her. I told her to take it back to Sprint tomorrow.
Mine EVO 3D however I've had since friday and haven't had a single problem. I feel bad for my old lady.

It's slowed down quite a bit. I don't think it did any today and only a few yesterday. I'll see how it goes before I take it back. Thanks for all of your input everybody!

Guys, I know the EVO 4G will reboot if an app has an issue that cannot be resolved through force closing or the OS itself. Have you tried wiping all your apps for a day and seeing if you still get the reboots? Then adding some of those apps back. Not all apps can coexist with one another.

same problem but only with one app, astro file manager, couple times now the icon went bad on reboots
Happened to me once and I believe it was app related. If i recall correctly I think it gave me a force close message AFTER the reboot which I thought a little odd.
The app was some comic strip reader app.
Just got my EVO 3D today. Immediately let OTA updates install, then did hard reset. Since then, it has spontaneously rebooted a few times and even locked up once, where the screen is black and the four bottom buttons are lit.
Twice, it stopped responding to hard that I had to remove the battery to get it to respond.
All this happened while it was idle or in my pocket.
I don't have anything exotic installed. In fact, had the problems before I even installed much of anything.
Besides a few apps, I do have Activesync enabled to sync with an Exchange server. Our corporate policies, as forced by ActiveSync, require power on numeric PIN, so there is no possibility of it getting powered on inadvertently.
And, wow, it just happened again, simply while laying on my chest while I was typing this! Powered off completely. Unresponsive to any button presses. Had to remove battery again.

This is the EXACT problem my phone is having. The four bottom buttons light up, but the screen is black. Only solution seems to be a battery pull, which I've done several times since getting the phone on Friday.
Yes, it's loaded with apps, but it's interesting that you're having the reboots even after a hard reset.

Why would you do a factory reset after receiving your phone if nothing is wrong with it? After installing the OTA updates you should reboot the phone because of the phone app missing from the lockscreen, but otherwise a hard reset (factory reset) isn't warranted or necessary.
After you did a factory reset did you update your profile and PRL?

This is a corporate-provided phone. I did a factory reset because IT junior staff did initial setup, so I could not see what options they selected for me.
Factory reset shouldn't make things any worse, so not sure why it's even an issue.

Yes.
Yesterday evening, I did a 2nd factory reset, roughly 7 PM. Went to Settings > System updates an hour later, and the only thing needing an update was HTC software update. Firmware, profile, PRL found no updates needed.
HTC software update identified 4 updates. I installed them.
My last lock up was a few minutes before yesterday evening's 2nd factory reset. So far it's been fine.

Do apps even matter if you aren't running them? My impression was they don't load until first invoked?
As per my prior note, I did a 2nd factory reset last night and discovered I had a few updates pending at Settings > System updates. Not sure what made the difference, but it has been stable since then.

Nope it is most likely an app you downloaded that is causing the issue, did it do this before you downloaded any apps, you you remember, I have gotten it a couple of times myself, but IMO I think it is app related.

I will preface this by saying I have all the current updates, I am not rooted and do not have any third party apps installed.
This morning I noticed my phone would randomly reboot. I am not sure that it is even a complete reboot though. It was sitting on my desk at work and suddenly the Sprint splash screen that you see on startup would suddenly appear and then the UI would load up. I saw this happen about 4 times and I started to investigate. I checked to see if there were any apps misbehaving and couldn't find anything wrong.
While using my phone over the next couple of hours, the screen would randomly go black and the four buttons at the bottom would light up. The phone was completely locked up. I had to do a battery pull to get it to function again. This continued to happen then I would get a message saying that the rosie utility had stopped working and it asked me to either force close it or wait. Neither of these did any good and the phone would lock up. Time for another battery pull!
I then decided to try to do a factory reset including wiping the SD card. The phone locked up during the factory reset. I let it sit for half an hour then pulled the battery. It was still not reset and the phone exhibited the same strange behavior. I then tried another factory reset without wiping the SD card. Same result. Phone locked up, battery pulled, reset did not take effect.
Another hour of being pissed off and everything is magically started to work correctly on its own. The phone has been operating smoothly for the past ten hours.
Any insight as to what happened here? Did any of you in this thread experience anything like this?
I haven't had a problem today. Perhaps last night's factory reset or getting all the HTC software updates installed did it?
So you never had all of the OTA updates to begin with? Your initial post said you did the OTA updates and performed a factory reset. Factory resets do not wipe out OTA updates. So I'm trying to figure out how you installed the OTA updates twice?
My girlfriend works in IT and I don't think doing a factory reset on a phone is going to allow you to see what the IT department did to your phone. In my opinion, it will just erase everything they just did to your phone. Maybe EarlyMon or Novox can chime in on this. Correct me if I am wrong.
For example, Horadin did an excellent job posting whats on his phone and what isn't.
Its either apps, roaming, or battery. If all of those are good, take the phone back to the store. But try a factory reset before returning the phone to the store.

Horadin, I would suggest returning that brick for another phone. Every once and awhile a phone turns into a lemon. You seem to have done everything necessary for your phone to not reboot. Factory reset and updating user profile and PRL afterward. If that doesn't work, return that puppy.
Just one last thing for everyone. The phones will reboot for apps or the OS locking up. And if the battery is crapping out on you. And if you are using "Sprint Only" instead of "Automatic" for your mobile network selection. If the phone can't pick up a good network signal it confuses the hell out of itself and reboots. I don't know why.

So the Don finally upgraded from the Hero! Good job homie. I'm haunting this forum to see if I want to give my wife the evo and get one of these.

My buddy has had the same problem. I had him do a hard reset and it was Ok for a day and a half until he setup his email again...and it began rebooting in his pocket like before. His problem seems to be occurring due to his email setup in the Mail app.
Anyone else narrowed their problems down to this?

Mine did it quite a few times this afternoon, but it hasn't since 4:30pm (about 8 hours)... I'll wait another day and see how it is tomorrow. Then I'll try a hard reset. And if all that fails, I'll ask for a replacement. However, the problem I'm facing now is that the phone doesn't seem to be sleeping... ugh.

Nevermind then. Someone had posted some place that a hard reset will not wipe out an OTA. I was wrong, my bad.
I think it depends on what exactly is being updated. I understand that firmware updates are kept after hard reset, but software updates are not. My updates were in the HTC software update section.

That's like what I experienced. Exact same symptoms--frequent lockups, and like you, the screen stayed black while buttons were lit and the device was totally unresponsive until I R&Red the battery.
Like you, it became stable, and I can't identify any factor that caused or cured this stability.

Really strange. My phone has been working perfectly for the past 24 hours now. I will just wait and see what happens with this one. If it acts up again I will exchange it . I just don't feel like dealing with it right now.
Had my first random reboot tonight. I was doing some web browsing, that arguably I could/should have been doing on my desktop that was 5 feet away. I really like to just lay about while browsing as opposed to seated at a desk in a chair with a rigid back on it.
I was on 3G with 2 fluctuating bars and full screen brightness for approximately 20 minutes. The phone got hot, nothing out of the ordinary, but eventually the net sort of locked up and the phone cycled power. I'm guessing it was an overheat of sorts. All I know is this better not become chronic, and it better not get frustrating.
I jumped from the Evo 4G because I was having overheating problems. Started out as a random reboot but became a habit eventually to where I couldn't use the phone for more than 10 minutes before it started endless power cycles.
I tend to have a low signal in my house for no good reason (with any phones), so maybe my 3G antenna are just in overdrive trying to grab the signal and hold onto it?
Also of note, my camera application wouldn't open earlier tonight. I tapped the widget and it opened to a black screen. Tried it twice then gave the phone re-boot and it worked fine. But that is a different issue.

For the record I haven't had any random reboots since the first few days of having the phone. Somehow I can make technology fix itself, I've done this with multiple gadgets
I get random reboots on my phone as well. However, mine are exclusively related to being connected to my Wi-Fi. Also, it seems that it only happens when the phone is sleeping. For example, I can't think of a time that I was actively using it and it started a power cycle. However, multiple times I will bring it back from sleep to see that it has started or is starting a power cycle. Or I will wake it up to find that a power cycle has been completed (no recent apps listed).
It does seem to run warmer with the Wi-Fi enabled...
My family recently got 4 3Ds and 3 of the 4 have had these type of problems everyday. Mine thankfully has not.
Sometimes a battery pull fixes it, sometimes multiple battery pulls will fix it. The people at the Sprint store gave a tip to wipe the phone and start over but holding down the lock button and the down-volume-key.
Fact of the matter is, this should not be happening at all. There is obviously a serious bug that needs to be addresses.
First timer here, I'm really disappointed mine is doing this as well. Not so much the black screen with bottom lights, but a shutdown with the HTC screen and Sprint Screen. This has happened multiple (10+) times in the 24 hrs I've had it.
So, I've had my new phone 3 days now and it's doing what everyone is describing in here...
I'll be using it and then for no reason at all, the screen just goes black and the lighted buttons at the bottom stay on. Sometimes a single battery pull will fix it and sometimes it takes two. This is happening now on average 1x per day.
The guy at the Sprint store said that less than 2% of the phones ever have a hardware issue and that it's usually (the 98%) a software issue.
This is totally unacceptable performance for a new phone!!! Wondering how many more days of this I will tolerate before I simply go back to Sprint and ask for a full refund.
I got my phone on Tuesday. As per above, had problems with lockups and random reboots. It got stable late Tuesday night and stayed stable until last night (Friday), when it rebooted itself for no reason. Then today, it locked up, with the hardware buttons unlit, and the battery and back of the phone were warm, so something was going on with the radio or CPU. Had to remove battery to get it to respond.
Despite warmness, battery wasn't depleted much.
How many random reboots/lockups per week did typical Evo 4G users get?
Hangups? I had exactly one the day on or the day after I got my Evo 4G on June 6 last year, and zero since getting my first 3vo on the 24th, replacement on the 25th (bad radio).
Random reboots? Very, very rare on the Evo, and the ones on the 3vo I've had have been self-inflicted (I tinker) and don't really count.
Same as described above.
Multiple reboots since I activated the phone 30 hours ago ( 10+ ).
Using programs as Camera, browser, Email, pretty much anything.
They give us 30 days I will just exchange it. Pronto
Ha just did it again. I bet there are programs not ready for gingerbread. I was getting similar stuff on my evo 4g.
I have installed
weatherbug
todo notes plus
e droid cell-pro
zedge
word of the day
I just flipped the sd card from my 4g to the 3d.
running BT, WiFi, GPS, 3G, Airrave

Reason: update
Just yesterday, my 3VO shut down while the I was listening to music and wouldn't power back on. I had to do a battery pull and plug it in before it would come back on. Again this morning, same deal, no juice and wouldn't power up. I'm going back to the store today for an off-center screen, and this just makes it that much easier.
Sprint continues their EVO line of Android Phones with what is certainly a first for them - a 3D phone. The HTC EVO 3D boasts 3D technology on a beautiful 4.3-inch screen and get this: you don't even need glasses to enjoy the 3D experience!
