Exclamation Black screen (backlit) on some incoming calls/wake up

First, I apologize if this has already been answered in another thread, but I've been searching for 45 minutes and haven't found a situation similar to mine.

I've had an issue where the back light comes on, the screen stays black, and the capacitive buttons on the bottom light up. The thng that differs from other experiences I've seen is that the phone doesn't freeze up. Instead, the OS is running in the background while the screen is black. I'm actually able to unlock the phone and open aps while the phone is in this state. After about 7-10 seconds the screen will light up.

This will happen randomly on incoming calls (pretty annoying trying to answer with a dark screen) and after hitting the wake up button. I'd say it happens maybe 5% of the time and it can occur while plugged into the charger or while running on battery power. It's not a deal breaker, but it is certainly annoying.

Is this the lock screen 'half-state' the update was supposed to fix? Any idea what could be causing this? I'm concerned that this will start happening more and more often until the phone stops working.

I've done both the battery pulls and hard reset, but it still happens randomly. Sometimes it goes hours without happening and sometimes it will happen 10 times in an hour.

And as an FYI - I've had the phone for 45 days and did not purchase the replacement protection. Shame on me
