The HTC EVO 3D is getting an update right now! No it’s not Ice Cream Sandwich, but it is something important. Software version 2.17.651.5 improves battery life, fixes Peep and brings a needed security update to Sprint’s lone 3D handset. You can grab the update now via your phone’s settings, or wait for the software push, which starts on January 17th. Like most Sprint software updates, this update will roll out over a period of time. If you’ve already grabbed the update, please let us know how it’s treating you.
I'd consider removing CIQ a 'Security Update'. And that's probably what the CIQ removal is disguised as. Why upset their users who are oblivious to CIQ by acknowledging that CIQ exists in the patch notes.
Personally, I don't care what Sprint calls it, just as long as it's removed.

Still nothing and Sprint feed just like phandroid is usually accurate right on the money I did a battery pull updated prl profile etc... And nothing yet anyone else having any luck!?!?
I would wait until the 17th before checking your update status every 5 minutes.
I'd also bet that the roll out would be selected randomly according to customer account number or other similar factors, like premiere status, # of years with Sprint, and activity more so than geological location More likely to distribute server load that way.

Update is downloading now. Using my speedy 3g connection and getting a massive 100kbps. I love how awesome Wichita, KS is for 3G. i hope the battery improvements are noticeable. While my battery life isn't TERRIBLE, with the bluetooth turned on, having access to a power outlet or a second battery is absolutely necessary.

Got it here in TX. CIQ is gone from what I can tell (or hidden in another name). Seems a little snappier, but it may just be me. I've had it plugged in since the update, so no word on battery life.

This update seems to have fixeda problem with my phone, where it would reboot whenever I clicked on the GPS icon. I believe I saw a post about this issue several weeks ago, but couldn't find it just now. Anyway, if you had that problem, check your phone. It should be fixed now.

Just got the updated. It definitely looks like Carrier IQ is gone.
But I noticed new service that I didn't see before: Smith.
Does anybody know what kind of service is this?
I don't know how I know the name (maybe it was a background process that ran before? - or a name I've just heard around). But I am guessing "Smith" has something to do with Smith Micro? Mobile Data Offload, Connection Management & More | Smith Micro
If I had a wild guess, A Smith Micro application or resource would be my best guess?
(com.android.smith is the process name - googling got me nowhere)

If you pull down the notification bar and tab over to quick settings there is there a new toggle for enabling and disabling 'Power Saver'? Or was that always there before and I'm just blind?
I don't use power saver, it just caught my eye because it is green and all the other icons are/were blue except the settings shortcut.
---edit---
I know it was not in the original release on release day, here is a photo from a release day review that does not have it included.
I still wish there was a display brightness slider or toggle in that 'Quick Settings' tab. I've been pining for that since the Evo 4G release, I hate having to install a third party application for something so elegant. I'd rather have a brightness setting slider than an unused Power Saver toggle.

During the installation there is a green progress bar on the black screen Similar to this one:
At some point during the installation the phone restarts and the progress bar changes to a cyan blue color with an android character over it. Then it restarts and turns green again for a bit, then the update is fully installed.
Probably the first screen is for unpacking, the cyan blue screen is during the actual install, and the last screen is applying the updates and restarting. Typical process, nothing new or different here.

Looks like they have added the Emergency Alert system to our messaging application as well. (At least I haven't noticed them ever before). If you go into Messaging and then hit Menu > Settings > Emergency Alerts there are some new choices
Presidential Alert (greyed out, unable to opt out)
He also mentions that CIQ is removed. But that Smith thing is possibly the old htclogger app that has been rebuilt. More info in the thread I linked. Also, if you're rooted, there is a root-safe build of the patch in that thread.

Bingo. Smith Micro like I suspected. Maybe I remembered that name from the early Evo 3D or old Evo 4G days and that was the old logger they used then?
I noticed in the Smith.apk settings (*#*#76484#*#*), they are very Gingerbread specific and specifically set to expire 03/30/12. Not to say that they can't extend that date somehow, but I'm willing to bet we might get ICS before 03/30/12. It falls in line with the Q1 predictions from Sprint and HTC too. This current update is a band aid until 03/12, and they are right now working on the ICS build I'd bet? Its not really new info, maybe just further confirmation of suspicions?

If you were one of the lucky ones that was able to keep the camera shutter sound off after the last update, this one does turn it back on with no option of turning it off. Sound is on in silent mode too.

I'm not happy about this at all. Good thing I have the Amaze Camera App.

Im actually glad to hear there are others with growing concerns. Please report your concerns about forced camera sound effects to HTC as soon as you possibly can. They CAN fix this we just have to let them know loud and clear what we would like. We shouldn't have to work around their bad decision to remove the user's choice. I have an open case with them and I checked in with them recently, it sounds like not enough people have contacted them about it yet.
I noticed that update messed up the htc bookmarks widget. The bookmarks no longer have labels. Anyone else getting this?
I noticed this too. The labels are actually still there, but the grey background behind the white text is missing, making the labels difficult to read.

I'm hoping that it's not just a placebo, but I really feel like my standby performance has skyrocketed. Downloaded&installed yesterday afternoon at 78%, did the usual surfing when needed, and ended the day at 76%. Wow.

I believe that the Smith-Micro package started as a service for carriers and manufacturers to manage OTA updates, that's what it's been used for since the Evo at least. Clearly, their role is expanding. I hope it's for the best. As those of us who experienced better network operations when getting rid of sending everything through the Sprint proxies (and not everyone did), I'd like to think that there's some evidence there that Sprint could certainly use some help with network management. Hopefully, that won't turn into something nefarious as well.
As you've probably all read, Sprint shut down their CIQ servers and wanted no further black eyes over it. It wouldn't surprise me that removing all background CIQ processes would improve battery life, others have noted the same either with root or on other phones.
Excellent detective work on the settings and 3/2012 catch!

Glad to see such a significant update on our EVO's... sometimes I dislike being rooted, people rant and wave about not having to wait for official updates, but sometimes I have to wait LONGER for devs to incorporate the update into their ROMs, but then again I'm just complaining a little bit, lol.

Sprint continues their EVO line of Android Phones with what is certainly a first for them - a 3D phone. The HTC EVO 3D boasts 3D technology on a beautiful 4.3-inch screen and get this: you don't even need glasses to enjoy the 3D experience!
