Yep, I just saw it, too. Here's a link: Sprint discontinues HTC EVO 3D online, limited quantities remain at retail stores - Engadget.

I'm not worried though, because i know they'll have replacements available - it just won't be brand new.

If people would just stop spend time worrying about the 3d feature, and more about how awesome this device really is... Sprint and HTC wouldn't have made this premature decision. But anyhow, I will continue to cherish mine until...

Well this will keep the resale market price reasonable when the new EVO is released. Based on this news I may not sell my device.

Default Evo 3D headed to Virgin Mobile?

This is rumor mill of course but I found it interesting... If you want a new Evo 3D after "supplies" are exhausted looks like you need to go to Virgin Mobile...

Rumor Mill: Sprint's Boost and Virgin units to offer WiMAX

April 22, 2012 — 4:54pm ET | By Tammy Parker

Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) sub-brands Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile USA may finally join the 4G marketing arena as they gain hand-me-down access to the WiMAX service Sprint is shifting from in order to launch LTE.

PocketNow and TechnoBuffalo are both reporting that the contract-free sub-brands are close to launching WiMAX-compatible devices. "After talking it up with a close source, it was revealed to us that Virgin Mobile USA is targeting a June release for its first step into the world of 4G," said TechnoBuffalo. Virgin is expected to offer some of Sprint's leftover WiMAX inventory of consumer devices, including the HTC Evo 3D, which Virgin will reportedly rename the Evo V 4G. Boost is also expected to follow suit with a similar strategy.

In December 2011, Sprint agreed to pay Clearwire (NASDAQ:CLWR) $926 million for unlimited access to the latter's WiMAX network for Sprint customers.

"We know there has been speculation about possible 4G offers on our no-contract brands," Sprint spokeswoman Jayne Wallace told FierceBroadbandWireless. "As you know, we don't comment on rumors and have not made any announcements to this effect at this point."

For now, Boost and Virgin are not expected to alter their pricing plans once they gain the WiMAX devices, with both likely continuing to offer varieties of "unlimited" text, data and voice plans. Sprint says it does not throttle data speeds for unlimited customers on its flagship brand but it does throttle data speeds at Virgin, generally once a user reaches 2.5GB of data consumption in a month. According to an email from Wallace, "Boost at this time does not have a speed reduction in place, other than any extreme situations, as stated in Terms & Conditions that I believe all carriers hold."

Sprint recently dropped the one-year-old HTC Evo 3D device from its flagship brand's inventory. In March, Bob Azzi, senior vice president of networks at Sprint, said that while the company experienced success with its WiMAX handsets, including the HTC Evo -the precedessor to the Evo 3D--Sprint will not launch any additional WiMAX devices. Instead, Sprint is focus on deploying multimodal equipment that includes LTE.

Though Sprint has no major commercial LTE networks in operation yet, it has announced three LTE-compatible smartphones: the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, HTC Evo 4G LTE and the LG Viper. Sprint is promising 15 LTE devices by year-end, most of them smartphones, and says it will launch LTE service in 10 major markets by mid-year. Sprint is operating LTE networks in certain small towns such as Kankakee, Ill., and other markets it has not named.

The EVO 3D on Virgin Mobile? That's an interesting rumor. If they do that, I might just change my mind about jumping ship to T-Mobile now that Google released an unlocked Galaxy Nexus.

It'd be kinda funny if they did this, actually. When I was out looking for my first Android phone last summer, the EVO 3D was the one I was pretty much convinced I would buy, until a friend told me about Virgin Mobile and the Triumph.

Pretty sure the EVO Design 4G was officially confirmed to be going to Boost Mobile, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if rumors of the EVO 3D going to Virgin Mobile are true. Would be a pretty good deal, IMO. Especially since HTC has confirmed both will be getting Android 4.0/ICS.

Wondering if this has more to do with Sprint trying to phase out WIMAX in favor of LTE, then Sprint cutting their losses with the 3D all together?

It would seem to be in Sprint's best interest to switch to LTE as soon as possible, instead of having to drag out their support for both WIMAX and LTE. For people upgrading now, they wouldn't be eligible for an upgrade for another 2 years, so if they can ensure all new devices this year are LTE then this would cut back likely on how long they would need to continue to support WIMAX.

I realize Sprint and HTC (along with everyone else) is down on the 3D, and quite honestly I don't understand all the negative attitude towards the device. Like others have said, too many ppl focused on the 3D instead of everything else the phone is. The way I look at it is the 3D is an added feature, one that I think is cool my device has, yet I don't use it all that often. I wouldn't however detract from an otherwise great device simply because an extra feature like this may not be fully baked yet and has some issues.

They're probably doing the same thing they did with their landline business a few years ago. Dump all the debt on the other company and then sell it. It wouldn't surprise me if they sold all of their wimax transceivers to Boost or Virgin and then wrote them off.

By the way, I think they confirmed the deal I mentioned in my earlier post today. Wimax and a few phones are going to Boost and Virgin.

I was at the Sprint store the other day to pay a bill and looking at a few phones when I noticed someone about to buy a 3VO. I was about to say no don't do it, there are better phones coming really soon. Don't get me wrong, I really like the 3VO, but I can't recommend it knowing there better phones just around the corner. I guess I would not make a good sells person at Sprint. lol. It does seem that many of the stores still have plenty of 3VOs left. They are really trying to get rid of them. I guess I can say I don't blame them.

You don't know their needs, though. I have a coworker who bought a Evo 4G a week before the Evo 3D came out. I told him about it and he didn't seem interested. His Evo does what he needs it to do and he has no plans on upgrading until his contract is up, at the very soonest. Even now with the Evo 4G LTE coming, he's happy with his Evo 4G.

Your right, I don't know there needs. That is one reason I did not say anything. I have talked to about 6 of my co-workers as to why the got the EVO over the 3VO. Most said the price and they did not need the 3D. When I try to explain the advantages the 3VO has over the EVO, they just throw up their hands and say oh. Which tells me they don't really understand the whole tech thing behind the phones, or they just don't care because the EVO meets their current needs. Most of us on the forums buy our phones to meet our present needs and see the potential for our future needs. Well at least that's how I think anyway.

Funny there's no mention of 3d in the new name... I think they realized the marketing failure from last time.

I couldn't even joke that the phone was a failure. The phone was, and is a great phone that fell victim to a failed marketing scheme. They thought that 3d was going to be all the rage and basically forgot about all of the other features of the phone and marketed it as a 3d device. Coming from an e4g, I think the phone filled the gap between last years choices and this year admirably. When I first got it I almost didn't bother to even root it because it was running so nicely but I did finally decide to root just for ad free and hot spot. Since then I've flashed a bunch of roms but stuck most of the year with mikg and the mean rom series because I really didn't feel like they could be improved upon too much.

Don't get me wrong, I'm itching to upgrade but it really doesn't have as much to do with any short-falls with the phone as it does with my own insatiability. I just like new things. I'm probably headed to the 4G LTE camp pretty soon.

It's possible that you might have just gotten a bad device that ruined it for you. That really sucks because I've really enjoyed the last year with it. If anything I think I'd call it severely under-rated.

The 3VO is not for sale anymore, they are only offering replacement only that I am aware of, but they will not swap out a 3VO for a EVO LTE if that is what you are asking.

I will also move it to the 3VO discussion and not rooted section.

When they had they little developers meeting a couple months back or so, they had pictured a 2nd Gen EVO3D...but since then, they have pretty much said its not gunna happen due to the lack of sales on our EVO3D...

Great point that I never considered. All the 3d photos I've taken on this may be lost forever. Unless the file format is recognizable by some computer software and you happen to have a 3d monitor.
