Does it show the sending/refresh circle spinning? I was having this on some texts with Handcent but they did send, it just showed still sending on my end.
Check with the recipient and see if and when they received it.

Or go into the stock messaging app and see if It's still sending.

I did ask one time if someone got my message and was told no. One person said they got my message a couple times. I don't get it. But the circle is always still spinning guess I'll check the messaging app next time this happens. I thought I had it set on to tell me if message don't send. I'll have to check my settings.

i had the same type of issue...
i was using google voice to text... sometimes i would get that spinning circle like it was trying to send. and it might come back with an error some time later. it would also take a long time to open the app (5-8 sec)
google voice uses data... and I know 100% that sprint data was in the crapper lately (EVO og) in my area.
so i went back to the built-in text app.. which uses sprint's CDMA voice network. I dont have issues anymore.
hopefully once the new vision upgrade is done.. i can use google voice again.

So the built in messaging app uses Sprint's CDMA Network and does Handcent not? I can use google voice and say text to so and so and it works is that what you mean? My Google voice just doesn't work when I'm driving sometimes but I may just not have a good signal I don't know. Maybe I'll just use Sprints messaging app and not Handcent.

Handcent uses the CDMA network to the best of my knowledge, and I seem to remember seeing something about using wifi as well now.
They are pretty good on getting patches out, so if this is an issue they will probably have a fix soon. You could use the stock messaging app till then if it continues to be an issue for you.

Yeah I hate to have to switch cause I am so used to this one and know it from having it on both of my other EVO'S. I was looking at GO SMS and Chomp. I haven't even configured Handcent yet for everyone so I may just wait it out. It doesn't happen all the time and hasn't happened since earlier today so will see. Thanks!

Handcent, Go SMS, Stock Messaging -- they are essentially viewers or browsers for the same underlying SMS text protocol. They might use Wifi for the downloading of MMS images and such, but the underlying text protocol is the same -- the emergency carrier band of regular CDMA cellular. So any of those apps are the same and should work under 1x cellular.
Google Voice to the extent that you haven't combined your numbers uses data so it has the possibility of being less reliable when at 1x, but more reliable if your cell service is bad but you have wifi.

Well I still don't get it cause this morning I saw two text not send the circle was still spinning from yesterday. I set my handcent now to tell me the message is sent but I never had this problem before on my 3D or my OG EVO. Last night most of my text went right through but one then I saw today that one and one from earlier in the afternoon didn't. My signal when not on wifi sucks in my house so maybe that's it I don't know. Even though I know text don't use 3g or wifi.

I agree this is confusing, but if my memory is right, I think we found at the 3D launch that SMS is using broadband (3G/wifi), even though it's supposed to be a 2G feature.

I haven't heard this, but it seems like I should be able to test it easily. I'll try it sometime tonight. Apologies if I'm wrong on this.

My memory is that when we turned off mobile data and wifi, SMS didn't go thru.
I'd say no worries on getting it wrong (if that's true) - SMS is supposed to be a 2G service (but then again, that was per GSM operational specs, so who knows with CDMA).
And when considering that Handcent will allow single messages of more than 140 chars, via prefs, and it works on CMDA without becoming an MMS to accommodate that, there's clearly something outside of the norm happening.
PS - this is one example of the discussion I'd thought I'd remembered -
I just turned off 3G and Wifi. No indicators on the status bar except the 6 bars. I was able to send and receive SMS with a coworker.
This is the same behavior as my 3vo and EvOG. I know this cause i disable the data connection when screen is off via tasker (with the exception of the presence of certain background apps running). And during these times, I've always gotten my text notifications as they come in.

But i thought with 3G off text can still be sent and gotten and calls can be gotten. I don't know but I just kow with the 3D I didn't have this problem. And it's not all the time just sometimes it's weird.

The link I posted earlier said that the 3G issue was with mms, not sms.
I recall that Handcent had an option to send longer messages via mms, and I believe that it does so when multiple recipients are involved.

Do those apply?
I tested on the Evo LTE with SMS (not MMS):
1) All antennas on (BT, WIFI, "Mobile Network") texts send (obviously)
2) With WIFI off and "Mobile Network" off (and within the Mobile Network settings, "Domestic Data" and "Domestic Voice" off), texts send -- lending evidence that texts are not 3G dependent but instead are ok on 1xRTT.
3) With "Airplane Mode" on, texts do not send.
4) With "Airplane Mode" on and Wifi turned ON, texts do not send. Evidence that regular texts will not send over Wifi. However, Google Voice texts (that solely rely on data) do send.
Based on this, I'm pretty sure SMS is transmitted by 1xRTT only.

sms is done on the same network as voice.
it is squeezed in between the voice calls on that system. it does not interrupt voice transmissions and very little space. that is why many argue that carriers should not charge for sms service... just a way to gauge the customers.
i do know...
when I dont have 3G or wifi .. google voice has a lot of trouble..
so i use the sprint text app and it works fine.
Without going into the details of cell protocols, this should help people figure out if they have the proper reception to use SMS services.
Note, MMS messages are usually wrapped by an SMS message. So even if MMS requires 3G or WiFi, and you don't have those, you should still get the wrapper SMS message.
So it turns out I'm having SMS messages as well. When I first got my phone I set up GoSMS like I normally do and noticed that I was having some text issues. I called Sprint and the recording that greeted me said that if I was calling with text message issues they were aware of the problem and were working on it. Alright, it's a Sprint network issue then I thought to myself. Fast forward and I'm still having issues. Most of my SMS are sent but I'm receiving them either delayed or in some cases not at all. I checked my stock messaging app and it also doesn't have any incoming messages that GoSMS doesn't have so it's clear they are never getting to my phone. I thought it was because of something I did when I froze the stock messaging app with Titanium Backup even though I had done this on every previous phone/ROM I've owned while using Handcent or GoSMS w/o any issues. I'm thinking now it's either hardware or system and this is getting quite frustrating.
The only few times I've experienced this with txt messages was when I had a txt coming in the same time I was sending one out... Just my 2 cents.. If your having multiple convos...

Well that must explain my problem cause in my house on wifi and I leave mobile network on but it usually is disconnected cause my phone is using wifi but I only get 1 bar my signal sucks. I've been using yahoo messenger more with one person cause it always goes through. But I've seen a couple times while connected to my wifi my 3G light up. But I guess it's not a handcent thing it's my signal inside my house. But So that tells me my EVO 3D had a better signal in my house then this phone cause I never had problems with text on the EVO or the 3D like this. Now of course there is no LTE here and my phone is on CDMA only and then it's on Automatic where it says Sprint only and Automatic.

I just saw this reply so it's a Sprint problem wonder why I haven't heard of many other people having this problem. I was just thinking my signal in my house is worse than on my 3D which I would hope not since this is a better newer phone. And keeping CDMA on only and not LTE shouldn't make a difference. I have no 4G or LTE here. Hopefully it will be fixed soon if it's a Sprint thing.

No, I think you didn't read all of what I said. When I first got my phone (launch day) it was that weekend I was having issues and when I called I got the message. It seemed to kind of clear up shortly afterwards so I think Sprint fixed their problems but it wasn't until days later I was informed of all the text messages I was missing still. These issues continued up to last night when I still wasn't getting every message that was being sent. One of which was a buddy that has VZW and if he sends me a message of over 160char I'm not getting either the first or in some cases the second message. He swears that I'm the only one having this problem so while I can't say that 100% the problem is on my end with him it seems that this is likely. I'm quite frustrated with this. I've never had a problem with SMS and in fact I have had less problems with Sprint than VZW when it comes to SMS. Now that I have an all new Evo LTE it's embarrassing that I don't even get SMS from my friends and they all say I need an iPhone now. Hard for me to convince all my iPhone friends how much better Android is when I can't even get text messages reliably.

I'm having this same problem as well, and my good friend who picked up her Evo 4g LTE on day one as well is having the same issue and a profile, prl update doesn't fix it ...either my texts won't send or they say they didn't but they did. Or my personal favorite my text will only send half of what I wanted to say.. and that's in a normal text under 1200 chars like 25 words etc it will only send half?? Cdma radio only, no WiFi, no LTE, and it still happens!? It's driving me insane! So I hope this is fixed soon because I hate re sending texts when they sent but it shows they didn't?
Yep.. me too. Random texts not sending. One sent a whole 6 days later!! And deleting the message from Handcent doesn't work - its like its lost on the Sprint network somewhere...

I don't get this but my friend claims all his text send instantly except to me they take a few seconds or longer. I said maybe Sprint is having problems and your problem is only with me cause your not texting anyone else on Sprint. I am still having an occasional text not sending but mines better than it was and at work my text are sending in the spots they used to send on my 3D they weren't last week but now they are. So I don't know.

Been having the same problem since day 1. It happens sporadically throughout the day and is really annoying when you send a text not being reassured it is actually being sent. Same issue with incoming texts and phone calls. It's like the network doesn't work just on my phone during those times because no one else in my house is having issues with the Sprint network. Getting phone replaced. Hopefully the new one will work.

Mines gotten better but still an occasional text won't send. I set up my Handcent now to notify me and it tells me the text was sent. But since my text got better at work and I was starting to get text and be able to send them in the same spots as my 3D I was happy. Twice none of my text came through till I got home from work then they all came through at once but mines been better for some reason. But still not a 100% like my 3D. I never had a circle still spinning on Handcent on my 3D or my OG EVO. And when it stays spinning one day my coworker said my message came through 5 times and one day I saw it said sent and the circle was still spinning that's only happened once. I almost was gonna get a new phone but then stuff was working better and I hate having to start all over with everything the way I want it now.

I've been having the same issue for about 3 weeks now. Seems like I have no trouble receiving texts, but about 1/15 texts that I try to send will never get sent. The little icon in Handcent just keeps spinning forever. Problem occurs whether I'm using Handcent or stock messaging, whether I'm on 3G or WiFi, whether my phone is rooted or unrooted. I was about to do a factory reset until I saw this here thread in which people are saying it's a Sprint issue. Well I hope for Sprint's sake they resolve it because it's making me regret renewing a 2-year agreement with them.

Couldn't have said it better also I am unrooted and experience the same exact problems WiFi or 3g...using handcent or stock messenger it doesn't make a difference and sometimes I won't get texts for hours upon hours from people il end up hanging with and then all of a sudden a text they sent me 2-5 hours ago finally shows up as I'm with them... So sprint seriously get it together!! First no g.wallet at all and now this come on!! Where's the software updates to fix all the bugs that we are all having with this device!??!

I've been waiting on an update too they need to get with it. Glad it's not only me. I have a bad signal at work and my text before on my 3D would only send in certain spots well they weren't sending text weren't coming through they would all come through at once when I got home it was weird. But now I am getting some text at work and I can send in certain spots again but I am stil occasionally getting that hung up text and I tried the stock too cause I thought it was Handcent at 1st but t's not the circle keeps spinning on Handcent and the stock I see the icon still there. Usually I copy what is trying to send delete it then paste it and send it again and it usually sends. But my friend claims it's mostly to me but when he sends me a text it spins for 10 seconds or more and it never has done that before. We use Yahoo Messenger a lot. I sure hope it gets resolved soon.

I'm still having this issue texts arriving hours or even a day or two late.. and sometimes I don't get them at all. Or my phone will say it sent but it didn't or it will send it several times hours later.. or it will say it has sent and it hasent or it will say it sent and it don't for a day or longer? So this has got to be a pretty decent issue and my huge question is where is sprint or google or HTC with any comments about the wallet issue, and the texting issue which both haveto be widespread.. so the question is if and when this will be fixed? I'd love to know that's for sure cause the texting thing is quite a nousance!!

I wonder about mine also and I seem to send alot more then I receive. Not sure if I have idiot friends who don't reply or it is the phone. Just a pet peeve of mine for people not to return a message even if it is to say don't bother me. Guess I have to test .. Maybe we truly to need a software update!!

Yeah I also have noticed that when I restart my phone occasionaly it will send texts to people, like texts I thought went through hours or even days ago that never did go through? Then they reply like what?? So its also sending texts that should have sent hours or even days ago after you restart your phone well atleast mine is and so is my friends (she has the LTEVO as well )
I've had this issue with Handcent on my HTC Hero for quite a while (the wheel just spins and it takes 15-20 minutes or more before it sends).
I've noticed that the issue definitely seems related to the WiFi, specifically when there is a WiFi connection made or a WiFi connection dropped. If I'm texting as I'm leaving my office (where I was connected to WiFi) or if I'm texting as I arrive home (where it finds and starts to connect to that WiFi), those situations account for about 90% or more of the problems I've had with this. It would make sense if Handcent was connecting through WiFi, then got hung up if WiFi dropped in the middle of sending. But it's been happening for 6-9 months, so doesn't that pre-date Handcent working through WiFi? Maybe the cause on the LTEVOs is different, but on my Hero there's a definite correlation. Maybe it's something with the antennas both trying to work too hard at the same time an bogging down the processor, I don't know.
Not asking for help with my Hero, btw. I should be dumping that in favor of the LTEVO or GSIII within the next month.

Okay so google wallet finally just got an update on my end as well as handcent sms so hopefully our texting issue might be fixed now if it was a handcent issue not sprint and google wallet I haven't tried just yet has anyone else got these updates and have you noticed the same issues!?
Okay so google wallet still a no go, all I can see is the status message when you open wallet they changed the wording a little bit that's it. But my texting issue seems to be resolved so far so maybe it was handcent not sprint :-) :-)

Oh good I'm getting the updates now. I hope my Handcent starts doing better. But my signal does suck in my house and earlier a few minutes later my text was still spinning. I just hit copy then delete it and repaste it and hit send and the second time it usually sends pretty quick it's weird. So I hope this update fixes it.

I'm using the stock text app and I'm experiencing problems like the text would not send. I have to restart the phone like 2 times a day and then I would get all my texts and than my texts go out too. I did all updates on the phone except the HTC update. Any suggestion? Can sprint store determine what's wrong with the phone?

Seems like a lot of folks are experiencing the "texting issue". I'm thinking it was a bad stock of phones from the initial supply because I had the problem on mine until I swapped for a new one after a week of frustration. My new one doesn't have any issues (knocks on wood).
The HTC EVO 4G LTE is Sprint's version of the HTC One X. It comes with all the same specs, except for the processor, internal storage and radios (includes LTE). And aesthetics are also significantly different.
