Default General questions/issues thread

Hey guys, long time no see!!! I got rid of my original EVO for the iPhone and realized that the grass wasn't any greener. In fact, it sucked!! I got the EVO 4G LTE and I had just a few questions I was hoping you guys could answer!!!

1) Is the full screen weather animation gone?
2) Is Mobile hotspot free?
3) I know the dedicated search button is gone, but is there a quick shortcut to it?
4) And probably the biggest (but smallest) is WHERE IS THE HTC NOTEPAD WIDGET?!

Thanks in advance guys!! Can't wait to root again and help all of you with your problems and questions!!!

Sense 4.0 got rid of a lot of the bloat that prior versions of dense had be come to be known for. Full weather animations each time you unlock the phone are gone

Mobile hotspot is easily modified with 1 line of code

You can always use the search widget or remap resent apps to either search or menu

Never used notepad but I'm sure there are plenty of market options if its not there

No telling why the Note widget was removed, but the root community has a solution to restore it that works for some, not others, so installation details are still being hammered out.

Root options will also let you map - as but one example - a long press on one of your keys to bring up Google Search.

A really good place to start is the Charmeleon rom, because it gives you options to simply change your setups via, well, setups, as opposed to multiple flashes, and then decide on your various rom choices from there.

See the root sticky guide to get rid of the Apple-edicted function lockouts, add the full CM DSP Manager, update your camera, etc etc.

Welcome back to Android!

You can still have full screen weather if you change the "Lock Screen" to the weather selection.

I'm confused. I still have weather animations each time I unlock the phone(??). I'm using the stock Sense clock/weather widget on the homescreen, and have the animations turned on, so i get clouds, lightning, sun rays, etc each time I unlock the phone. I actually prefer it that way, and is the main reason i haven't stuck with a 3rd party launcher on this device yet.

I wondered, I thought I had that on this phone before changing my launcher.

Yeah, I don't have the LTEVO, but they had it on a phone I played around with in the Sprint store. I thought maybe the OP and others were referring to something else more intricate/animated than that.

Its just the image in the clock that is animated though right?

For previous versions of sense the animation was an overlay on the entire screen. I thought thats what the OP was referring to.

Not just the image on the clock, it's a full screen animation. The clouds and lightning extend almost to the bottom of the screen

Long-press the widget, slide it to the top where it says "Edit", select your location, then check off "Show full screen animation"

I stand corrected, it is there after all

Is it on by default? I don't remember turning it off. Oh well, I'm used to it off now so that's where it will stay.

Hey guys, OP here of course. What I was referring to has been figured out by all you wonderful people! Im guessing full screen animation is disabled by default because I hadn't touched it since I brought it home from the store.

And to answer question about the iPhone, in a very simple answer, I disliked everything. The only thing I liked was that all my music was integrated seemlessly. An hour of two of my time and a 32GB Microsd card fixed that.

Default EVO LTE "Issues"

When it was time for my upgrade I thought long and hard about what to replace my original EVO with. With all the GS3 commericials I had to give it a shot so I did. Then I found myself frustrated with the way some of the functions operated. Don't get me started on the predicitive text, it couldn't even figure out some basic words (or at least put the most likely first on the list). So, I decided to pass that along to my son and wait a month for his upgrade as I did more research. Now I have the EVO LTE...and now I have new frustrations.

First-Why did they stop letting you control the volume of ringers and notifications individually? Is there any way around this? I used this all the time at night. When I'm on call for work I would leave the ringer turned up while I turned notifications to silent. Is there an app that can help? Since I use different notifications for different apps (standard messaging, google voice, facebook, standard notifications...) I can't just easily change them to

Secondly-when my alarm goes off I have to drag dismiss to the circle, then put in my PIN, then hit dismiss. WTF? OK, I just tested this again and it seemed to dismiss when I dragged dismiss to the circle. Maybe a fluke this morning?

I used to use an app called Audio Manager back in Android 2.3 and it let me change whatever i wanted. It gave 6 different audio types to change, including a Ringer and a Notification option...

I know i don't need it anymore with my device rooted though.

i was talking to a sprint employee who sells phones... on a bus.
she said.. that she had had many clients (not everyone) bring them back for the same issue.

the phone just randomly turns off and does not want to come back on... but wait a few hours and it will turn on.

EDIT: this was about the EVO LTE.

I hope the phone doesn't just shut itself and back on at random intervals. I hope I didn't make a mistake going from GS3 to EVO LTE. I like the look and feel of the EVO LTE better. I'm used to Sense UI having has a Hero and EVO. I think removing the ability to change volume independently is stupid.

this thread is in the EVO LTE sub-form

we (me and the sprint employee on the bus) were discussing the EVO LTE.. and how it would randomly turn off.. and not come back on.. for a few hours. this was not on all phones.. just a random few.

This is the reason I like Android. You can always find a way to customize to get the phone the way you want. However, I also don't like having to put a ton of apps on the phone just to operate how I think it should versus apps for productivity or fun. Anyway, I ended up putting Hide It on my phone which includes an audio manager that allows for separate control of volume levels. Plus the ability to hide stuff on my phone from the casual observer. I was looking for an app to do that anyway.

Thanks for the help!

The tied volumes is a standard change in ics by Google, HTC simply followed suit.

Reports of the LTEvo randomly shutting down and not coming up are few and far between on our forums - about the same for other models.

Guess I should complain to Google then . HTC had it right in the old EVO where you could choose to use the same volume or not by checking the box. I was actually considering going back to the GS3 for this one issue. I had already worked through all of the issues I had with the GS3 except the bad predictive text and the crappy dialer. HTC has the best dialer IMO. The only thing I liked better on the GS3 was the swipe right to call left to text function.

Now to figure out the NFC file transfers.

OK Figured out NFC...that it doesn't work for large files like pictures and such. Oh well, I never thought it was that useful considering on the GS3 I had to take the case off to get it to work.

As for the separate volume controls, Hide It doesn't actually work either. It shows separate controls but when you back out and go back in they end up the same levels. Oh well, the search for separate volume control continues.

A root patch for volume is probably needed. I've started asking some of the devs at XDA about it, I'll post back when I hear something.

Resistance is futile, you shall be assimilated.

If you do decide to root, just post up a thread, we'll get you fixed up.

Haven't found a root fix for ringtone/notification volumes but dev -viperboy- at XDA did mention -

That looks like what I need. More apps to do stuff the phone should just do . Oh well. I picked up Tasker and have hit setting ringer to 0 during the night and then setup an exception list so when certain people (or Work) call me it will put ringer to full.

Default More issues

Whenever I make a call the screen automatically shuts off. If I want to use speaker phone I have to hit power button to wake it up then hit the speaker phone button. Plus, if I'm trying to call a number that's busy and I'm trying again (think radio contest) without even putting the phone near my head it shuts off. If I'm making a regular call and then pull the phone away from head to hang up I still have to hit the power button to bring the phone awake! Has something drastically changed? All of my old HTC Android phones (Hero, Original EVO) would do this just fine.

Another problem I recently ran into was an errors stating I was almost out of memory. I believe it came from Tasker because it said if the phone is too low on memory Tasker could start behaving badly (paraphrasing of course). This has only happened one time and I when I look at memory usage it showed over 200mb available. What does Tasker need to run? Should I have stuck with the GS3?!?!?!

Please reply ASAP, tomorrow is my last day to return phone if that's what I choose to do.

This sounds like a simple proximity sensor issue. Do you have a screen protector installed on the glass? Its a simple problem with a simple fix. Check out this thread for some more information on this:
AndroidForums.com | HTC Evo 4G LTE - Proximity sensor not working

I don't know for sure, but it sounds like Tasker throws that error as a simple warning that there may be issues with the application if you have low memory. Not that you actually have low memory?
Low memory talk has been addressed quite extensively in regards to this phone. One facet of the problem is that we think the system does not fully and accurately report RAM usage and what applications are running/ended. Things were slightly remedied with a system software update (OTA), which attempted to fix how the system prioritizes memory and ending old/still running applications. Meanwhile others have found massive gains when rooting the phone and slimming down the running resources. If you plan to root you should not have issues.
I've found that keeping my stock setup very lean&mean and not worrying about memory is the best fix for me.

I don't think so, but I've become self opposed to the Galaxy S 3 based upon its blind overpopularity. I don't want to see the open and choice filled Android device market slimmed even more by the unthinking majority of one device or one manufacturer. The grass is not always greener.
But by all means, do what is the best for your personal situation. My opinion is obviously swayed, but the Evo 4G LTE is a stellar phone even with its few qualms.

I started wondering if it might be the Zagg. Got my phone and Zagg free at BB and they installed it. I see the notch seems to be about half way over the proximity sensor. I'll try getting that fixed by tomorrow and see what happens.

So you rooted then just removed some of the bloatware from Sprint?

I'm kind of the same way and I definitely had my qualms about the S3 which is why I gave it to my son and used his upgrade for the EVO. He loves the S3 but then again, he had an orginal Galaxy so he likes the way Samsung(Touchwiz) works. Not to say that I didn't like some things that it did. I guess there's no perfect phone for me but hey, at least I still have an FM radio!

Now, is there an app that will replicate what Samsung did with NFC and WiFi direct? The search is on.

There are a few good roms that fix the multitasking/memory-management issues with the LTEvo, without removing bloat, but that's desirable as well.

Probably best to discuss in the root forum.

I will be investigating those forums soon. For the most part, if I rooted, I'd only be concerned with WiFi tethering and removing bloatware.

No but the way Samsung implemented them together so you could send pictures and songs after bumping the phones is pretty good. Again, I still have some research to do on using the same thing on the EVO.

Free Zagg, not a bad deal. I know I wouldn't use it for 1 cent more than that though.

I'm not rooted and completely stock, haven't taken any updates, only needed applications are installed and not through the Market. Thinking of rooting right before the upcoming Jelly Bean update though. Been putting off rooting for over 2 years - I've been afraid to become the guy with too many ROMS.

Yeah I use the FM Radio frequently. Just used it Sunday to listen to the football game while shoveling a foot of snow off the driveway.

You probably won't find one that is integrated as well and uses NFC, but there are a few WiFi-Direct applications around like WiFi Shoot.
Google should really update Android Beam to use WiFi Direct for large files, and continue to use Bluetooth for small files.

Tethering is a common rom feature, and it's become well known for us that HTC is using Gingerbread instead of ICS definitions for some of the memory management parameters, so I think you'll want those fixes, and you can get them without getting into the tweaky/flashaholic side of rooting.

PS - Kickstanded and listening to FM Radio at my desk right now.

Really live the speed of the phone, yet do not enjoy the slow transition to more of an ICS/Android UI. I really miss Sense 3.6. Absolutely hate the new music player in 4.0. No list view for artists sucks. And I hate the blue highlights in the dialer. Something weird to me when I see the green call button, then the icons below with the blue highlight. I for one enjoyed having my android phone being so much more refined and polished than other phone makers. I think HTC should have kept more of the uniqueness of sense in place.
But pictures are really good. Browser is really good. Build is as always HTC high standards.
I have 10 days left to decide if I am keeping the phone. Right now it is 75% chance I will.

It won't bring up menu on the stock launcher, but it works for all applications.
