My friend claims his phone is all better from uninstalling speaktoit assistant and that somehow it may be running in my background and slowing me down.We both took off our widgets and it seemed to help then problems came back. My handcent takes forever to open black screen for a minute.
I said if he continues to not have problems for a couple days I'll uninstall mine and see if I notice a difference. Not sure if that's the cause or not but he thinks it solved his problem and his sense kept rebooting too. I just messaged him to see how his phone was doing so will see.

I ran the initial 4.04 update on Saturday and experienced the ringtone issue. I saw that HTC had pushed a fix out but when I checked for a second update from HTC, it is not offered. Any thoughts? Is there a manual update that I can do to resolve the issue or is it just a matter of waiting for the HTC update to become available for my device?
I ran the update to 4.04 and have the ringtone issue so I have been manually checking for the HTC update that fixes the bug but it is not available. I tried to update the PRL, Profile and Firmware but I get error code 1233. I am guessing that this is also stopping me from receiving the fix from HTC but I am not sure. I have done the power button simulated battery pull with no impact. Sprint wants to monkey around in my phone but I would rather get the solution here. A quick search shows that the error code is related to rooted devices but mine is stock.
Any thoughts? Do I see a factory reset in my future? If so, do I need to back up my pics, videos and text messages?
You should do a factory reset regardless. If there was any glitch in the wifi or network while downloading, your phone would have quirks, and a factory reset would fix it. Your pics and videos will not be affected, but you must clear your Google wallet and back up any apps and texts you want. I recommend My Backup Pro for apps and SMS Backup for texts. Both are available in the Play Store.

My phone went into this reboot mode over and over and wouldn't go to the home screen. I had to hard reset and the next day after putting several apps back on my phone i t did it again. I hard reset again and took it to Sprint and they ran a diagnostics which failed. They then for some reason hard reset again and checked it once more and it failed so there ordering me another phone. I know it's gonna be a refurb and here I just paid for this new one a month and a half ago. I hope this one is ok.
Hey all,
I have searched the threads but I did not see an answer to this, but if I missed it i am sorry for the re-post.
I have set some Individual Ringtones for different contacts, a feature I love as I do not have to look at the phone to know who is calling, however I noticed that my default ringtone is ringing no matter who calls me. The phone does display the picture and the contact name so I know it is reading the People App.
Is this a bug, has anuone else seen this or knows what setting I need to change?
Thanks

I have done 2 OTAs so far. I also just checked and there are no more available.
My Android version is 4.0.4, HTC APK is 4.24 and Software version is 2.13.651.1.710RD. Am I on the lastest version?
Yes, that's the latest version, but the update I'm talking about fixed just this specific issue - it doesn't change the Software version at all. It's odd that it's not showing up for you.
Do you know how to install an APK file? The fix is just one file, and can be installed that way (you just have to allow programs from unknown sources to be installed on your device).

I'd suggest flashing a ROM based on the update. 4.0.4 brought along many fixes and speed enhancements

So I've been reading this thread for some time now, and I didn't think to chime in until now.
I did have the problem with the individual ringtone after the OTA update, but that didn't bother me. I downloaded the fix (that got pulled) and it's fixed...
But here's the problem I've been having that doesn't seem to be mentioned much: I have a bunch of custom mp3's in a Ringtones and Notifications folder on my SD-card... but the phone won't recognize those folders and put them in my ringtones or notifications list when in settings or trying to set notifications in different apps (like Handcent or Gmail).
What's the deal? I swear that it was working this way before the OTA. Did the OTA break that, too?
I did fix that somewhat by finally rooting the phone (whereby I could copy all of these custom mp3's to the /system/media/audio/ subfolders... but not all of the notifications are being recognized EVEN THOUGH they're in the right SYSTEM folder.
I've seen that issue mentioned on various ICS phones. Don't know how to fix it, but I think that Rings Extended still works and would be a good workaround if so. Plus, it's free.

It might be the media scanner glitching up. I ended up clearing the media scanner/storage data to force it to go start all over (you will for the moment lose music/gallery while the media database rebuilds for 10 minutes). That solved this issue for me.

In my experience with the phone, it's smart enough to put any music file that's in a directory named "ringtones" into the pick-list for when you choose ringtones (either for a specific contact or as a default). It has similar behavior for directories named "alarms" and "notifications". I think it will even handle multiple such directories. It doesn't seem to scan every time that list comes up though. Put your tone files in the appropriate directories (either on the built in flash or the SD card*), and reboot the phone. After that you should see them as options for ringtones/alarms/notifications.
*I highly recommend putting all your ringtones/alarms/notifications on "phone storage" (the big user-accessible chunk of internal flash memory). If you put them on the SD card, those tones will be unavailable whenever you have the SD card removed or in your phone but mounted to your computer as a disk. So if you assign a custom tone on the SD card to, say, your spouse, and s/he calls you while you have the SD card mounted on your computer as a disk, the phone will revert his/her tone to the default Sense tone, and you will manually have to reset it.

What I did was go to Apps in Settings, then tap on All
Find Media Storage, and tap on Clear Data.
After that you'll notice in the Music App and Gallery App that it will find no music and no pictures. After about 15 minutes those apps will have their music and pictures reappear.
I went through that process and rebooted the phone twice, but the choices still didn't come back in the ringtone or notification selection lists.

I wish it did for me!!!
Unfortunately it didn't fix it, but now here's the weird thing....
In changing Notifications tune in an app itself (i.e. GMail or Handcent), there appear in the stock list 6 of my many custom ringtones. Only 6. Not all 25 of them. I have no idea where they're getting pulled from.
I went through phone storage AND my SD Card and deleted all of the 'Notifications' and 'Ringtones' folders that appeared either at the root level of the storage or in Media subfolders. So theoretically, they should DISAPPEAR from the tones list, but those 6 haven't. They're still there.
So then I went to /system/media and made sure that none of my custom files remained in Notifications or Ringtones sufolders. They're not. I rebooted a couple of times and those 6 tones are STILL THERE!!!

This is just getting weird.
When you delete a media file, it might take some time for the media scanner to update and reflect that the file no longer exists. Although yes, I agree it's weird.
I know I've ran into similar problems with my wallpaper and notifications disappearing, as well as all photos/images not in the main DCIM gallery folder which was weird. Messing around with deleting the media storage eventually seemed to do the trick and I ended up only keeping the 2-4 notifications/alarms/ringtones on the phone storage itself (instead of SD card) and leaving it at that.
Hi. I was just notified earlier that I had a system update. It was a rather larger update. 171mb I believe. Only thing I've really noticed so far is some browser tweaks. What else is new for this update?

Personally i am not familiar with the Evo 4G and what updates it has received but if you already had Jelly Bean (4.1) and were updated to 4.1.2 then the updates were mainly bug fixes so you probably wouldn't notice a difference.
But if the update was from ICS (4.0) to Jelly Bean (4.1) the major difference you should notice is just smoother transitions, with the introduction of Project Butter everything should be much smoother in JB.

Yea I definitely notice a difference in going back and forth between the homescreens
I have the EVO 4g LTE from Sprint in New York and one day a little while ago (month or two) there was this update (dont remember the specifics) that I did and since then my phone has not been behaving correctly and needs daily reboots.
First thing I notice wrong was that when I received a call and swiped to answer it it would force me to do the gesture unlock, then to press answer once again.
Then if I wanted to silence and incoming call I would not be able to.
Also, if I missed a call even if i would open the phone app the message notifying me that there is a missed call would remain both on the phone app icon and in the notification area.
One other thing I notice, but this is very intermittent, is that text messages would not send out, they would get stuck and when I would reboot it would notify me that there were failed text message and ask if I wanted to resend them.
I am pretty sure that this is a direct result of this damn update - which is kinda sad since I have been extremely happy with the phone since I got it (upgraded out of BlackBerry).
Any ideas on if this is a common issue? Or if there is a way to fix it?
Android works with cache, just like your browser, and if the Android caches get tangled then things act goofy, just like your browser.
To clear them, you need to do a factory data reset from your settings. That has the side effect of clearing your data as well, so it's best to first use MyBackup Pro for your apps and app data, SMS Backup+ for your texts, and to go to your gmail account on the web and make sure that all of your contacts are in the cloud first.
We're going to merge this with a similar on-going discussion in just a few, no big deal, but first I wanted you to see this response.
I've confirmed that the slow loading of Contacts (which affects the Messaging app, People app, and and anything else that does contact lookup) is indeed related to Facebook Contact syncing. Once I reset my Contacts file and removed all Facebook data, everything was back to normal again.
Note that all of my contacts are stored in my gmail account so if you're going to follow the process I'm outlining below, make sure your contacts are either synced to your gmail or you made a backup from within the app.
- Disable Facebook Contact syncing of contacts (from Facebook settings or Settings -> Accounts & sync -> Facebook -> UNCHECK Sync Contacts/Sync Live Feed).
- Disable Google Contact syncing (Settings -> Accounts & sync -> Google -> UNCHECK Sync Contacts)
- Clear data of your contacts file. (Manage apps (All tab) -> Contacts Storage -> Force stop/Clear cache/Clear data)
- Restart device (to make sure all temp files are properly cleared)
- Launch Contacts and verify it's empty (except for the single My Profile which auto creates) and then exit it immediately
- Accounts & sync. Turn Google Contact Syncing back ON. (Leave Facebook syncing off for now.)
Voila! Once I did the above, speed of all the apps accessing my Contacts file was back to normal, and my Contacts file itself shrunk down from 37 MB to 6.5 MB!
PS - I haven't turned Facebook syncing back on just now since it's possible that turning it back on would slow everything down again. I'm not sure. For now, I prefer to just leave FB Contact syncing off until I have more time to play with it again.
I tried this exactly, and for the first couple of days, it went great! My contacts loaded quickly again! I have NOT resynced Facebook just in case that was the smoking gun. It's been a week and it's gotten WORSE than before. One in every 3 times I try to access a thread of text messages, I get a lag of about 30-40 seconds of the screen that just says "Loading". Awful!! What's going on?!

Yeah, this crap is happening to me too. I am having a lot of issues with this phone right now (freezing up, widgets still freezing, etc.)
I tried the fix and it worked for me. thank- you so much!!
One thing I noticed was when I went in to uncheck my gmail contacts sync, it has a sync symbol with a exclamation mark on it saying there was a problem syncing. So I assume this was part of the problem probably caused by the facebook syncing. Prior to this, even with the Facebook syncing it was working fine till recently. Not sure what messed up the syncing. In either thanks again for the fix. I didn't need my Facebook contacts synced anyway.

8737 weird texts, Google Voice errors, all since OTA update
So my phone has been acting really weird since the update last week. I have my Google Voice account linked with my Sprint account. Ever since the update, I have been receiving text notifications from Google Voice AND Handcent, which I use as my default messaging app. I have text notifications OFF in the GV settings in the phone, and Handcent selected as my default messaging app. It's pretty weird how one has to allow GV to receive text messages, to be able to uncheck the box that controls the notifications, but I did that and then set it back to my default app. I have uninstalled GV and reinstalled, and no change. I really want my phone to go back the way it was, and only get text notifications from Handcent, and voicemail in GV.
Also, since the update, I have been getting weird texts from 8737. The one I got this morning looked like this:
They are all similar gobbledy gook. Sometimes I get three or more a day, sometimes none at all. WTF is going on with my phone? Has anyone else experienced these problems?
Also, the update reset my notification sounds, but that's the only other thing I can think of right now.
Do you happen to know why my post got moved here? My specific problem seems to be unique, and I believe there are people on this forum that can help. Originally it was posted as a separate topic, then it was moved here. Now my question is buried at the bottom of this thread, where only you have given me any assistance. I would rather not clog up this thread, and would get my answer more quickly in a separate thread.

Can anyone help!?!? I'm still getting these texts.
I saw a thread about not being able to personalize ringtones for your contacts after the last update. I tried it and in worked. After some trouble shooting from Sprint for an unrelated issue...I can't personalize ringtones again. Does anybody know that link? I can't find it. Thanks!
