Cool Must Have Android Apps

What are your must have apps for the awesome HTC Evo. Here is my list.
  1. Advanced Task Killer - Close unwanted apps that maybe running in the background.
  2. Aldiko - eBook reader. Comes with a bunch of free books.
  3. Astrid Tasks - Best task list manager I have found so far. Has options for tasks list and reminders.
  4. ASTRO - Best file manager for the phone and SD card.
  5. AudioManager - Has a widget to control all the audio options for the phone in one place. Must have app if you put your phone on silence / vibrate only / custom audio profile for alerts and notifications.
  6. Foursquare - App to publish your location information based on nearby establishments. Pushes the same info to Facebook and Twitter.
  7. Google Sky Map - Shows off a real-time view of the stars based on where you point the phone. Best app to show off to your friends with the "WOW" factor.
  8. Meebo IM - All in one mobile instant messenger with AIM, Yahoo, MSN, GTalk. But uses a lot of battery if used continuously.
  9. Mint - All in one money manager to track expenses etc.
  10. Network - I use it to turn off the GSM radio and use CDMA only. This trick has improved my battery life.
  11. Photoshop.com Mobile - Have some fun with the pictures taken with the phone. Must have to show off to your iPhone fanboys.
  12. ShootMe - Phone screenshot grabber.
  13. Shopper - Google shopping app which has a built in barcode scanner. Runs a Google product search using pictures or barcode.
  14. Ustream - Live video broadcast phone to their website.
  15. XKCD Viewer - View XKCD cartoons and the hover over text.

EDIT - added 3 more to the list based on suggestions:

  • Dolphin HD Browser - Added to the list since it is faster and more option packed than default browser.
  • Compass - Neat app to show off the built in capability.
  • ScoreMobile FC - Something to keep track of the World Cup 2010 going on right now.

You missed the biggest one - Fring with a Skype account for free platform-independent video chats - try that instead of Meebo, or in addition to.

Others report that updating the PRL removes the need for Network.

I far prefer Advanced Task Cleaner over ATK, and when I root my phone in the next few days or so, I'll probably use that sort of thing maybe never...

Of course - these are just my opinions.

BTW - I really like World Newspapers.

I was an avid user of Estrongs, but I found that Astro is the only file manager that opens and properly displays html files. +1 for Astro.

I really like Call Confirm. It's not as sexy as Google Sky, but it's more useful. It just brings up a window asking if I'm sure if I want to call so and so. The extra window isn't annoying at all, but it prevents me from doing anymore accidental dials, which I found surprisingly easy to do on Android phones.

1. ShopSavvy (finds lowest price for an item)
2. Where (Finds lowest price for gas, listing of movies, restaurants, etc)

Doesn't Estrongs allow you to browse your PC files over wi-fi? That's what I read,...either way I'm going to try it out!

Appbrain allows you to browse the market at appbrain.com from your PC, mark apps of interest and then manage and install these lists of apps from your phone. It also checks for updates periodically on the apps that you have installed and informs you of these updates.

The app market simply allows you to browse the market from your phone and DL apps and install them.

Does the LED Light app you guys are talking about allow you to make use of the dual LED flash as if your phone was a flash light??

Ive tried a couple apps for this, but they dont seem to work on EVO, just other Droid devices... im looking for something like this. Thanks!

It works perfectly for the Evo. Have been using that app since I got the Evo launch day.

I hardly ever see MultiRemote on people's lists. Using my phone as a mouse and controlling VLC and winamp is awesome.

I second the Quick Settings suggestion. I'm using it to replace Audio Manager and all the radio buttons I had setup (never tried Network).

Changed the phone entirely for me. Lots of other cute apps, but without this, my phone wouldn't see 1/10th the use it does now.

Wanted to add a couple:
Swype (beta) - More polished Shapewriter IMHO
Auto Task (Free) - Perfect for Profile setting based on Calendar entry.
Picasa Tools - A very nice integration with Web Picasa.
LastPass - For password mgmt.

Not sure but I've been using it for free wired tethering. Kept getting error 67 using the built in wired tether.

ShapeWriter whips Swype's ass as far as I'm concerned. I'm not sure it is available right now, though.

O.K, I'll play...

  • I like "Where's my Droid" for when I can't find the damn thing....
  • "Mobile Defense" allows you to remotely lock it and delete everything in case it gets stolen.
  • "Metal Detector" cause it pisses off my buddy with his "Crapple"
  • "Wifi Analyzer". Very cool
  • "mp3Tunes" Allows me to upload my music to the cloud to stream it anytime.

How about the new Sling app, pretty awesome thing to have is you wanna watch DN or DTV on your phone, provided you're equipped at home first.

things i haven't seen mentioned which i've found to be amazing...
c:geo ~ geocaching for Android - Android app on AppBrain
Touiteur (Twitter) - Android app on AppBrain - best twitter app hands down. pro version comes with widget
SilentMode OnOff - Android app on AppBrain ring/vibrate/silent. best widget i've seen yet because it includes all 3. onoff has other widgets, too.

oh and this one
http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.vesperaNovus.app.StartupAuditorFree kills stuff you want on reboot. very very useful for gtalk and sprint services, i've found.

-Tabbed Out

For anyone in the TX area (Austin, Dallas, Houston) there is an app called Tabbed Out. You open a bar tab with your phone, and then you can pay out with your phone without having to go to the bar again. Works in restaurants that participate too!

It's growing every day and is the most awesome app I've ever seen. Brilliant.
